  1. Here are a few thoughts: 2) This sure sounds like Dizzy to me. Familiar tune as well. It’s quite enjoyable, but I can’t place it. I will add this to my collection. 4) This is bopping big band number with trumpet that might Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson. If that’s so, it must be a rather be a rather obscure record. 5) “No One Knows You When You’re Down and Out” eight: That must be Art Blakey and the tenor, I would think, is either Sonny Rollins or Hank Mobley. 9) This opens with some nice flute, then we have the entry of Dizzy. I believe this is “Kush,” though not a version I have previously heard. 11) This sounds like the great Freddie Hubbard piece “Red Clay.” Certainly not the original, but quite good with the strong tenor sax and overall feel. 12) I know this singer…I know her…but can’t name her.
  2. I went to a Kool Jazz Festival in Cleveland in 1984--actually my first show ever. Here is who I saw: Miles Davis, Gerry Mulligan, Bob Brookmeyer, Art Blakey, Dizzy, the Marsalis Brothers, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams. That Festival really rounded up some legends--and all for one rather low price.
  3. It's arguably the most popular tune of all...seems like Bird built most of his career on it. There seems to be plenty of variation--this coming from someone who is neither a professional or amateur musician.
  4. So could #8 be David Murray, James Carter, Bennie Maupin, or Marty Ehlrich?
  5. When it comes to bass clarinet it's pretty much Dolphy--and then all the rest. Of course, David Murray is good too. Or how about James Carter?
  6. What good fortune that so much great material by Coltrane has been dug out of the archives in this century. Here we are more than 50 years past Coltrane's death (and nearly 60 since Dolphy's)--and we are about to receive this material! I am a fan of both artists and eagerly await this release.
  7. Miles Davis: "Concierto de Aranjuez" Does music get any better than this?
  8. I also fixed up East/West by Frisell in the same manner--and that was an actual CD I bought.
  9. It's a glitch, for sure. As I say, all the Jazztet tracks contain the same info, yet the album is split into two albums or folders. .... a minute later...Bingo, mjzee! That (album artist) created the fix.
  10. Any album you import (or upload, or download, or whatever the term is) has identifying info like artist, album title, year of release, genre. You sometimes need to enter these yourself, as when putting in a burned CD. I had everything matching on Meet the Jazztet (Golson), yet the album appears twice--first with the opening 2 tracks and second with the remaining 8. A store-bought usually does not have this issue.
  11. One aggravating thing is how an album can be split into two (or three or more). This generally happens when I import burned CDs. I know it's a problem with Apple. I have seen the obvious advice about making everything match: artist, album, genre, year. I have done that and yet some albums remain split.
  12. There is a limit to the volume, unless I use external speakers (which I have not yet attempted).
  13. Is there a way to truly increase volume? I usually play tracks two clicks from the top level, and sometimes at top level. Of course, the original source material varies. I generally listen less than 2 feet away--and rarely more than 8 feet away. It serves me fine so far, but I am wondering if there is a way to really pump the volume.
  14. I find it odd that Apple uses a pause button, but no actual stop button.
  15. One day (and perhaps soon) I should figure out the whole "cloud" business. I guess this can increase storage considerably. Can you create and play playlists in the cloud? I am very much in the dark on this right now. How do you have over 18 terabytes devoted to music?
  16. The key was to click on the status bar. I have over 3,000 pieces that would take 13 days to play. As I re-create my music library, I will probably have upwards of 30,000 pieces.
  17. Is that is "Songs" in the sidebar--below recently added, albums, and artists? If so, I am not getting any numbers at the bottom. My Apple computer is Monterey.
  18. I am still getting comfortable with this after purchasing an Apple desktop for the first time a couple of weeks ago. So I will try a few questions here and see what I get First, I would like to know how many hours of music I have on the machine. I get it fine for albums and playlists, but not the grand total. When I used Windows Media Player, I could easily see the hours for each genre: jazz, blues, rock, etc. So far I can't find that on Apple--not by genre or grand total. Attempts to find the answer through Google searches have been unproductive.
  19. A few years ago I bought this set for about 17 bucks and it covers Ellington's best years. The label seems to be "Documents" and stems from Germany. It may be roughly chronological in presentation. The obscure "Swingtime in Honolulu" is track 3 of disc #1. By disc #3 we are hitting the great works form the 1940s. Too many tracks with vocals, but still a real treasure trove. Just the discs--no info booklet. Anyone familiar with this?
  20. R.I.P. I've heard a couple of his records and enjoyed them. How old was he?
  21. Ir is peculiar in several ways, but I am managing it OK so far.
  22. I am working on rebuilding from scratch (or nearly so). Any more effort to recover what I had on the external HD just seems like wasted energy. I blame HP more than Apple, and there is the fact that I had a virus and maybe that affected the external HD. Sometime in the near future I will start a thread on using Apple Music.
  23. I had one backup, but it has largely failed me with music. On other things, it was invaluable.
  24. On another issue, it looks like that on Apple one needs to create a playlist in order to burn an album or set of songs. I can work with that, but it just seems odd. Why not burn straight from the album?
