  1. You'd think RVGs would have saturated the US market, and most Amazon reviewers seem to think they are da bomb. They even sometimes attribute Concord Joe Tarantino re-masters to Van Gelder.
  2. Yes, for Newk's Time. That is a different solution from what Joe Harley talked about for this session on the Hoffman board.
  3. I ordered the new record earlier today. According to a review on Allaboutjazz the horrid sound quality of the previous (studio) album has not been replicated live.
  4. I didn't realise the interview earlier is about the new album. Perhaps this thread is superfluous. I ordered the new record earlier today. According to a review on Allaboutjazz the horrid sound quality of the previous (studio) album has not been replicated live.
  5. New live record out now on Abstract Logix. Guitar legend John McLaughlin performed across America during Summer 2013 with his trailblazing band, the 4th Dimension (Gary Husband on keyboards and drums, Etienne Mbappe on bass, Ranjit Barot on drums). The final concert in Boston, which was held at the Berklee College of Music, was recorded for this live release. This fiery performance features music from John’s recent studio albums Now Here This and To the One, not to mention the classical Mahavishnu Orchestra song. You Know, You Know. When asked to describe The Boston Record, McLaughlin said, “From time to time, a live record is made that has everything: great collective playing, a terrific audience, fantastic recorded sound, and a wonderful atmosphere. In the new recording of our concert you’ll find all of the above. I’m really happy about this recording.” The Boston Record Track List 01. Raju 02. Little Miss Valley 03. Abbaji 04. 6. I'm going to open my copy of the Terry Pollard after all. Curiosity got the better of me, but I've not yet decided against selling the Japanese Bethlehem re-issues I've acquired.
  7. No problems here on Safari 7.0.2 under OS X Mavericks.
  8. I'm not going to get into a further discussion of RVG CDs - We've been there and done that. However, if it weren't for that "geriatric clown", you'd have very few BN SMH releases to listen to. Or you might buy a decent turntable and pick up a few King, Music Matters, Analogue Productions, whatever LPs and hear what that "geritric clown" did in his younger days. Clever - yes. Intelligent - no. About what I expected. So I should borrow your LPs, turntable, ears and brain. Roger!

  10. The album covers game seems to have ground to a halt. Here is a theme to liven things up a bit.
  11. And these downloads are not available legally for EU citizens like myself. Welcome to the future.
  12. In the second video you can also see some Atlantic Coltrane tape reels, and Grundman discusses the difference between listening to the original tapes and consumer products. He mentions the ORG The Shape Of Jazz To Come and how well that turned out sonically. Grundman did the My Favourite Things, The Shape Of Jazz To Come and The Bridge hybrid SACDs & vinyl for ORG Music.
  13. Here is a video of Bernie Grundman talking about the current transferring of the Blue Note catalog to high resolution digital for archiving. The project has been going on for four years and these are the transfers being used for the HD Tracks downloads, the "Blue Note 100" vinyl, and almost certainly the Japanese SHM-CDs as well. http://youtu.be/d8o0Gl7XUT0 More here: analogplanet.com (I found a link to this video on the Hoffman board)
  14. The most disappointing thing about 75 years of Blue Note is there are no interesting CD releases planned for the US and EU markets. New recordings don't count. Don Was probably has nothing to do with the Japanese SHM releases, and even these are not as good as they could have been (compare the Prestige 7000 and New Jazz 8200 series SHMs). I feel pretty much disgusted by the current Blue Note for almost as long as I collect jazz on CD. EMI Blue Note on physical digital media stands for inferior product. And it was Blue Note that gave that geriatric clown Rudy Van Gelder the opportunity to dominate the CD re-issue market for a good decade.

  16. I agree. Nice remastering for these series. These Japanese CDSOLs are the loudest jazz remasters currently being released. It's just too much for me (East Coasting). I regret having spent the money I did.
  17. The concert was at the roof terrace and I indeed got the impression of an open rehearsal. If my memories aren't too coloured Andrew was giving instructions and it wasn't a seamless concert.

I prefer the sound of the guitar on the Mestre disc over the Moscow. Two concerts mere days apart by the same group.
  19. I don't know why Hoegaarden is listed as a 'light' beer. In Europe it contains less alcohol than a lot of other Belgian beers, but not much less than pilsner. Hoegaarden contains 4.9% ABV. There is also Hoegaarden Grand Cru at 8.7% ABV.
  20. Will listen to the session as recorded on the Mosaic box later today. I saw Andrew Hill's Sextet at North Sea Jazz in 2003. His music was still somewhat impenetrable to me at times back then, so I wish I had enjoyed the concert more.
  21. I'm only familiar with Hoegaarden. If the taste and alcohol content are the same as in Europe, it's a refreshing beer (with a slice of lemon) on a warm day. Probably more expensive than in Belgium & Holland, though.
  22. Thanks, Lon. I think I'll pass on some of the new alternates then.
