  1. That burton Greene album on Columbia is an interesting session! Today I spinned: Terumasa Hino "alone together" takt Japan Jackie McLean "bluesnik" Steve lacy "solo at space who" ( unfortunately this one is merely on loan from a friend :/ )
  2. Edward Vesala trio "nana" lp Anthony Braxton "five pieces 1975" lp (still my all time favorite Braxton record) Marzette Watts savoy lp
  3. SIdewinder...got mixed up responding to two posts...$250 was for "distant voices" by Steve Lacy. Well aware "shades of blue" is a $1000 record easy! Would love to hear your story about "distant voices" Clifford...
  4. Do share! I've had both CD issues and have been after the LP for many, many years. Once passed on a nice copy for $250 around 10 years ago because at the time money was a lot tighter. Had to pretty much pay more then double for the copy I have now but that's how it goes... It's a meeting between two of my favorite musicians from different musical realms... I'll hunt down those mike Taylor CDs... Thanks sidewinder...
  5. What are those Mike Taylor records like? Have they been reissued on cd? Clifford ... What's the "overhang party" like? Is it well recorded? I have the NORD duo lp on ALM. The Takagi disc is great....don't have the original(yet haha) but have a pristine copy sourced from an audiophile so I presume it sounds even better then the PJL cd which Ive read has some mastering issues... Last night I played "distant voices" by Steve Lacy...my own personal holy grail quest ended very recently when I finally got ahold of an original vinyl of this Sidewinder I love so many of those lansdowne sessions...Denis Preston was a genius..they all sound so great! Can't afford "shades of blue" right now but do have the other 4 rendell/carrs although my "dusk fire" is a Japanese issue in stereo(!). "hum dono" is also a bit out of my range at the moment but I am fortunate enough to have "integration" which to my ears is actually the better of the two... Would love to hear your thoughts on those mike Taylor records...
  6. Helen Merrill "sposin" Japan victor lp Francois Tusques "le nouveau jazz" Japanese issue
  7. This morning: Steve Lacy "the gap" This afternoon: MC5 "high times" This evening(as I type this): Sadao Watanabe "mbali Africa" w/Terumasa Hino, Masahiko Togashi, etc
  8. Im a huge Togashi fan, and when I hunted down the majority of his lps some years ago I avoided this one because I was worried about the "scat/vocal" aspect since I'm not a big fan of improv jazz vocalizing. Anyway I just picked this up recently as was pleasantly surprised....Kowald really shines on this...an exciting session.
  9. That's a nice Paul Bley album...gotta love the "Canada" cover! Our national radio station, the CBC, put out a number of great jazz transcription lps including some more obscure artists as well as a great Kenny Wheeler album too(reissued on CD). On cue for me tonight: Nucleus "we'll talk about it later" Masabumi Kikuchi "kochi/wishes" Verto "reel 1936"
  10. Masahiko Togashi, Lauren Newton, Peter Kowald "contrast" lp (Japan, paddlewheel)
  11. I think I read that somewhere myself..Ian Carr went on to make some great Nucleus records(my favorite is Belladonna) and Don Rendell's "space walk" is a great later session too. But you got to love all those rendell/Carr albums...sublime stuff!
  12. Don Rendell/Ian Carr quintet "change is" Masabumi Kikuchi "hairpin circus" Steve Lacy "the wire" Barre Phillips "mountainscapes" Keith Jarrett "belonging"
  13. The moderators point is taken and understood..as someone else mentioned this is a non-commercial release distributed to friends and family members I presume...but nonetheless I don't wish to break any forum rules. Hey MikeWeil I am very envious that you saw this band live! I love Fred Bracefull....his drumming is great...he shines on an obscure mal Waldron album entitled "Spanish bitch".
  14. I've actually bid obscene amounts of money for this but have lost(not quite $1000 but over $500!)...it's strange that no label would want to reissue this given that it seems almost everything and anything is being reissued these days. It is from a very interesting(to my ears) period of Dauners and I would love to just have a dubbed copy of it even just to hear it.
  15. Does anyone on this forum have this rare Dauner lp? I would love to hear this...
  16. Oops you are so right...I knew that. Perhaps it's best not to post to this forum while having a few India pale ales;)
  17. I have and enjoy "notes from the underground", "fly me to the sun", and "orangutang!"..would love to hear more of his stuff from around this era. I Wish I had deep pockets to collect his releases on the Bird Notes label!!
  18. Earlier tonight..."watership down" by Clint Houston with Al Foster, Joanne Brackeen, and John Abercrombie. Right now... "Cannonball Adderley quintet in Chicago" with some guy named John Coltrane. Up next is the new Steve Lacy/Joe McPhee 12" and Jimi Hendrix "first rays of the new rising sun"...
  19. Two Steve Lacy gems this morning...."the window" and "reflections"
  20. I used to buy tons of 7"s as a young teenager but they were all indie and punk rock stuff...now I have about 1000 singles collecting dust in boxes. Now that I'm almost 40 I find them a complete annoyance...such a chore to listen to a 7" now...for 3 or 4 minutes a side it's hardly worth the effort. What makes it worse is that now new singles cost so much....I would love to hear that new Globe Unity Orchestra 7" that just came out in Austria but for $15 no thanks. The "free jazz und kinder" double 7" was/is a unique piece of music, but I sold my copy years ago after recording it to CDR....too much of a pain in the rear to listen to!
  21. Thanks for the info/confirmation! Glad to hear I just haven't been super unlucky in getting bad copies...it is a shame because it's such a great album. Too bad it wasn't reissued as part of that America cd reissue campaign from years back...I have many other America lps too and they all sound relatively fine. I can hardly even get myself to play side two of this record as the distortion bothers me so much...
  22. Hi, Yes I know about the dropout..it's on my lp as well. However, on side two there is a noticeable drop in sound quality and there is a unpleasant "in the red" sort of distortion sound that sort of blends with the drum cymbals and at times it's hard to tell if it's a pressing problem or a recording/microphone screw up... Do the 2 tracks at the end of your cd sound equal quality wise to the first few tracks? Thanks...
  23. Hi everyone, I've had two copies of this lp and both have pretty horrible distortion on side two and I can't tell whether it's inherent in the recording or a problem with the pressing? Does anyone else own this lp and have a similiar problem?
