  1. GOOD NEWS! The Farmer/Golson is listed for pre-order. Reserved mine, & was informed it is scheduled for Sept. "1st-ish" release. Can't wait for this one...
  2. What is the catalog number?? Catalog number is UAL 4006, cover also states "Barney Kessel appears by arrangement with Contemporary Records" but he does not appear on the record!
  3. Found a great copy of Gerry Mulligan's "Jazz Combo From I Want To Live" on the original deep groove mono red label (United Artists) for $10 at a local record swap meet! Not to be confused with the full-orchestra sound track lp from that film, it's a "small group swinger" with Art Farmer, Bud Shank, Frank Rosolino, Pete Jolly & Shelly Manne. Amazing to find this in m- condition these days for cheap $ - and a nice companion to the Concert Jazz Band Mosaic which has versions of some of these tunes!
  4. A lot of us have gone through the "mom threw 'em away" thing. I'll never forget mine proudly telling me when I returned from Vietnam how she finally got rid of those old comic books (my older brother and I had hundreds of Marvels, ECs and etc.- if you know what I mean). On the other hand, I've acquired some great records from other moms doing the same thing - maybe it all evens out in the end!
  5. Heads up vinyl addicts: new Japanese Blue Notes (180 gm pressings!) including True Blue are available at Acoustic Sounds (www.acousticsounds.com), maybe elsewhere too. Other titles by Jackie McLean, Mobley, even J. Griffin's Congregation lp! These are not cheap at $49.95, but they should sound terrific and are usually very limited issues.
  6. Another thumbs up here for your choice for the reasons you mentioned - and Charlie Shavers has to be one of the unsung greats on his horn as far as I'm concerned! I've been listening to his Keynote recordings recently and can't help but wonder why he wasn't given more opportunities as a leader by Verve.
  7. I'm gonna have to get that Soulville reissue, I have a nice original copy that is pretty much unplayed (and I'd like to keep it that way). Thanks for the review!
  8. I agree with Brad's assessment of those vocals. To me, the Capitol set has about 3 1/2 discs of great stuff (out of 6 cds). One of the hazards of complete sets like Mosaic is you get the so-so sides as well as the good ones. I'm still gonna buy the new one - but it is even more loaded with Woody's nasal "singing" than the Capitol, as best I can tell! Actually, I find those songs ok in small doses, but over the course of 7 cds it's hard to take...(too bad we can't get a "complete instrumental Woody Herman set). -_-
  9. What a great thread (for some reason I didn't see this earlier)! Your comments/recollections of Riverside are very interesting. B)
  10. Desmond/Hall would be my choice if it was included!
  11. And as a sideman on Herb Geller's "Fire In The West" lp on Jubilee he is listed as "Kinny Durham" (no "e", just Kinny)!
  12. I absolutely agree with that! While I don't think the W 63rd's are incredibly better-sounding than the NY USA's in every case, there is something to be said for the sound quality of those 1st pressings! Two good examples are the monos of Blue Train (W63rd) and Idle Moments (NY USA)-it's like hearing the music for the first time compared to later issues, at least for me. B)
  13. So the silver discs are becoming even more soul-less? All of these changes are yet another reason for me to stick with my vinyl. I'm probably gonna have to get the Dexter Gordon though...
  14. One of my Blue Trains (I have a few copies of this one) has W 63rd label with no "r" or "inc" on one side & NY on the other - I've always believed this variation comes from the very beginning of the transition. Other independents used up their existing labels when changing designs too-I have some examples of this from Chess Records. As for the one-sided deep grooves, I have Midnight Blue and Bluesnik monos with this.
  15. Picked up "Terminal 1" yesterday (on Concord): Benny Golson leads a quintet with Eddie Henderson-tp/fl, Mike Ledonne-p, Buster Williams-b & Carl Allen-d. I have not seen the movie, but Golson is in it & this disc has the title tune (?) and "Killer Joe" which he apparently plays in it. At age 75 Benny's playing is a bit more laid back than it was back in the day, but he sounds good and I am enjoying this one more than most of the recent releases I've heard. Eddie Henderson (mostly muted and in his Miles bag) almost steals the show-I have not heard him sound better! For me the highlight is a 10-minute version of "In Your Own Sweet Way", but there are no duds on this one, IMHO (also a great version of "Cherry"). My kind of bop (and I can't wait for the Jazztet Mosaic)!
  16. OK, OK, Woody's singing must be an acquired taste - I gotta get this one too!
  17. With the new Herman set now listed on Mosaic's site for July release, I'm probably gonna pre-order it - but the discography makes me think it has a bunch of Woody's crappy vocals (a lot more than the previous Herman set). There's a lot of great music here, but oh those vocals! Any opinions?
  18. My "Hope Diamond" copies include Blue Train, Roll Call and several Horace Silver lps all mint or close to it.
  19. Yes, I have the same software and the same problem you described with my PC.
  20. Another thumbs up for those Contemporary stereos - another great example is the Joe Gordon lp (black label). I have to stick up for RVG's monos though - I recently scored a m- copy of "Midnight Blue" (mono deep-groove) and it is just incredibly great-sounding!
  21. Two more out-of-print Mosaic LP sets have come my way: Duke Ellington Capitol 8 lps & Miles and Gil 11 lps! Oh Happy Day!!! (there goes the budget again)
