  2. Looks like Ayler records has begun posting live performances (most from their CD releases) on YouTube. Over 30 vids... nice long clips... some really good stuff there. Ayler Records on YouTube Link fixed.
  3. And even when they go OOP from the Mosaic site you'll still be able to find stragglers at various retail outlets right? Does that go for the entire series or just early releases? ...After the initial releases I lost track as to how these were being distributed.
  4. One post in and you've already managed to do your part to stimulate the economy… OK, I was going to buy the Horseshoe set anyway but you did manage to further whet my appetite. I seem to recall seeing somewhere that Transparency's CD-R sets were done in collaboration with Marshall Allen but maybe I'm thinking of the Art Yard re-issues instead. As for the Lost Reel series I really am just curious. If royalties are being paid to the El Saturn folks then I'll advise the trading site that has approved their distribution as boots that they need to remove them. If not, then let the downloaders eat cake. Either way it isn't likely to impact my decision to purchase any of these releases in the future.
  5. What's the verdict on the legitimacy of the Lost Reel series? I ask because they've apparently been branded as boots and have popped up on at least one trading site.
  6. I'll add my kudos for the ArtYard re-issue of Disco 3000 - very nicely done. I can't wait for them to release the others... those small group recording from Italy (Disco 3000, Media Dreams, and New Steps (which isn't on the reiisue list)) are amongst my favorite Ra and On Jupiter is excellent. It'll be nice to retire the LP dubs of these I've been living with for years. Has anyone picked up the Transparency "Live At The Horseshoe Tavern" CD-R box set yet? ...any thoughts?
  7. I wouldn't pay anywhere near $30 for this... unless you're completist and have everything else the money could be better spent on other Ra items - there's so much being issued and re-issued at the moment. The music disc is solid. But the lecture is the kind of thing you'll listen to once and never again.
  8. Jeff Parker will be in Dallas at the Fallout Lounge 2/16. And Peter Brotzmann and Han Bennink will be in Austin 4/26.
  9. Finally. There's been rumor of a Blue Notes box for several years now. Thanks very much for posting this news.
  10. Thanks so much for posting this (and to your friend for maintaining it). Malachi's calendar was a great service and I used to refer to it regularly.
  11. Ah, fair enough. My reply was a sarcastic one but it did seem odd that you would label the Immediate Sound series participants as "a rather odd variety". A simple misunderstanding. My trips to Chicago are always during the week (business related) so although I've seen many shows at the Hideout I have no clue what type of bands play there on the weekends. But I have to tell you, "oddball funk-jazz psychedelic freak-out bands" does pique my curiosity. Nice to hear Von is still going strong.
  12. The "rather odd variety" is one way to put it I guess. The Hideout is a good venue. Jazz is on Wednesday nights - the ongoing Immediate Sound series curated by Ken Vandermark (I think). They basically stepped in when the Empty Bottle chose to discontinue weekly jazz. This site is a good source for jazz of "the rather odd variety": Umbrella Music And Von Freeman is still playing his regular Tuesday gig at the New Apartment Lounge isn't he?
  13. I think I might just make the drive down for this one.
  14. Bill's is still open. He relocated south of downtown (maybe Lamar, I can't recall). Regardless, it's not worth visiting.
  15. Just noticed over on Amazon that someone created a series of 3 "So You'd Like To... Guides" specific to funk compliations. Many of the ones mentioned here are covered plus some others. Blow Ridiculous Dough On Rare Funk Compilations edited to correct link
  16. Yes, her tour for The Greatest has gone off without a hitch as far as I've heard. I caught her show in Dallas and she did fine. Interesting enough, in a recent interview (conversation actually) she credits Anthony Braxton (among unnamed others) with giving her the confidence to perform live. "And then I moved to New York and my best friend who played drums with me started taking me to all these free jazz shows-- Anthony Braxton, different stuff, real experimental improvisational stuff. And that gave me the confidence to actually physically be on stage. I saw that, dude, those people weren't judging. That gave me the courage to be up there and turn my back to the audience, because it wasn't about rock'n'roll projection, so I felt comfortable." Cat Power Interview
  17. This item has (finally?) made its way to Ebay. The current high bid is in the ballpark of $125,000. VU Acetate on Ebay Commentary on the auction from Pitchfork here: Pitchforkmedia and here: Pitchforkmedia 2
  18. CDs are 50% off as of today.
  19. And for those without a lot of coins, you can stop at one of those do-it-yourself car washes to convert your bills to quarters on your way to the supermarket. ;-)
  20. Yes! I'm a newlywed who's wife recently learned what those "Paypal" line items are.
  21. There's no fee for this? All your coin are belong to you? In essence, Amazon pays the fee to Coinstar for you in exchange for the business.
  22. Check out the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks. Recommended for sound and design. Harmon Kardon

  24. Hi Greg, I was thinking about giving you a call about the show. I'll be in for the entire weekend; let's touch base as it gets a little closer! m~ Will do, Mark. My wife and I are now confirmed for the Friday night show. Sal, it'll be good to see you again.
  25. Mark, I'm pretty sure I'll be in town for the Friday night show.
