  1. mind you that I cleaned off the "acculab" scale with my nose so this math may be a bit encumbered: ...but it should take forty four of those little babies to make your weight of 4.4#s, that's WITH the OBI strips! now, how many spoons did it take to fill up frankie machine's hi-hat?
  2. I got a wafflingly positive email back from someone with the initials "MC" after requesting a possible Select consisting of the Pullen Trios and Pullen Adams Quartet sessions. Now there's some essential shit.
  3. That's HER! My daughter, who's in her second year of piano, was very hip to it. Some hot stuff there. The show, which I don't listen to all that much, is Ray Smith's "Jazz Decades". At times he surprises ya with something like this. Looking closely at the cover posted I can see that bounce was a bit of Krupa. Thanks y'all.
  4. No Lon, not her. Give it another try. I know you will know. Maybe Queen' was too clean of a term for her? She evidently only recorded a spit of stuff. Supposedly it's all on one Classics Records CD. All I recall from the show.
  5. Heard some cuts on a local retro jazz show the other day. The artist was the so called Queen of the Boogie Woogie. The one cut was one of those typical double entendre boogies that had something to do with 'cooking'? The other couple were instumentals and they were unbelievable. All the hints I have. Can someone help me out?? Thanks.
  6. Try Frisell's best minute of music with "N.Y. Flat Top Box" from the Naked City or Torture Garden albums. Hoo-weee. Incapable of Speed? Fa!
  7. Yeah JoeG, this is not the best example of Holcomb, Mrs. Horvitz. I was thinking of her other two prior albums on NoneSuch. Sort of that post George Winston driving through the midwest with a storm behind ya kind of music. She is warbly though.
  8. Soul Stream...I'd watch this one (not mine and it's not tough to find)NASHVILLE. It's the next step I guess. I have a tough time with violins and trombones and wah wahs at the same time. His best with Zorn is by far "News for LuLu" and Lewis' trombone works!! Also that mention of Robin Holcomb in that auction got me thinking to how good she really is. Maybe Norah could warm up for her on a tour.
  9. My favorite Frisell was his soundtrack to the TV Halloween special of Gray Larson's "Tales from the Far-Side". That was done with Wayne Horvitz and Joey Baron. He has resurrected some tunes with his violin and trombone band but never to the match of that stripped down score. Unfortunately it was only on once and I taped the wrong channel that night. Has anyone heard his new release: "The Intercontinentals"? I heard a great cut on the radio that featured Vinicius Cantuaria. It better be good with Elektra now propping MSRPs close to twenty bucks!
  10. Looking to grab the "Music From Peter Gunn" and "More Music From Peter Gunn" disks and am curious as to the sound quality of the various re-issues. There are the expensive Japanese, the BMGs out of Germany or domestic in the Living Stereo imprint, the Buddha with a couple extra tracks on the single disc and Musicrama. I'm confused.
  11. Look out for "Look Out!" and Parlan's "Speakin' My Piece" just for the classic 'Wadin''. The former was a Collector's Choice and might be tough and I believe the latter is a JRVG only (aside from Mosaic).
  12. ARTIST: SHIRELLES, THE TITLE: BIG JOHN ALBUM: BABY IT'S YOU WRITER: A. SOMMERS/J. PATTON "(big john, big john) big john, won't you come on home ain't you gonna marry me my folks all wanna know when the weddin's gonna be they're makin' plans, shakin' hands been waitin' so long there's somethin' goin' wrong big john, if you don't come home i'm gonna have to leave this place my folks know you've jilted me i'm ashamed to show my face they're makin' plans, shakin' hands been waitin' so long there's somethin' goin' wrong (bridge) they all told me 'bout the things you do if what they told me is true they all said that i'd soon find out i'm wastin' my kisses on you (instrumental) there's somethin' goin' wrong (repeat bridge, then verse 2) (big john) been waitin' so long (big john) there's somethin' goin' wrong (big john) ...and fade"
  13. As serendipity has it I clicked over to eBay and MTNYS had 1m 28s left. So I'll give it a whirl again next week. I imagine AOTB is probably pretty hard to find. And I just found out that The Shirelle's "Big John" was a co-pen of Patton? Is that so??
  14. HUGE fan of Cabell's work on ACCENT ON THE BLUES Marvin Cabell, I suppose, is one of those guys you either get right away or never do, and there's no real "right answer". But I dug him the first time I heard him, just as I did ACCENT ON THE BLUES. We used to get REALLY stoned and listen to BN sides on a regular basis back in them days, and AOTB was always a fave for that deep, DEEP groove, the way Cabell rode it with such confidient, unstudied nonchalance, and for Leroy Williams unformed yet undeniable hipness. And, of course, Patton his ownself. Many years have passed, and the system is relatively toxin-free these days, but it's an album that STILL gets me high, and Marvin Cabell is still one of the major reasons. This probably TRULY explains nothing, but there it is anyway! Sure wish I'd spent my time back in the day wrapping ears around this kind of stuff. It's frightening to think of the music I wasted my lobes and the buzz on. As always your insight's make one take notice. Thanks. B)
  15. people actually voted for Minor Move with the Mobley and Jackson in the line-up.
  16. It'll be good to see what flushes out here. My toss up is between Along Came with a nudge to Oh, Baby! As for those last two Ulmer sessions, can someone explain the merits of Marvin Cabell? I remember chucking those two back to the used record store almost immediately.
  17. that was phenomenal!!!!! meanwhile were all stuck with yet more mitsubishi rave ads.
  18. I found this on the ever great Jazzamatazz site. This disc is on the "Scufflin'" label.
  19. Don't know if anyone is "waiting" (due May 20) for this boogaloo but sounds interesting. Whilste I don't spin much Beck I do find his tunes worthy of an occasional boogie. 1. Paper Tiger 2. Tropicalia 3. Mixed Buziness 4. New Pollution, The 5. Devils Haircut 6. Sexx Laws 7. Loser 8. Jack Ass 9. Where It's At 10. He's A Mighty Good Leader 11. Nobody's Fault
  20. You guys are good as usual. Flipped over to Dusty and so it is... Guess I will delete this request in a bit? Thanks so much. (and I didn't know that Lon's ol' buddy 'owned' Reprise) 1. Duke Ellington -- Afro Bossa/Concert In The Virgin Islands . . . CD . . . $13.99 (Item: 46852) WEA (France), Early 60s Condition: New Copy 2 great albums from Duke Ellington -- both recorded for Frank Sinatra's Reprise label in the 60s, with an approach that's different than most of Duke's other work! Afro Bossa is the real winner here -- a very groovy album that's certainly Ellington's best for Reprise from the 60s, and a nice batch of tracks that have a distinctly Africanist leaning. We're not too sure about the "bossa", but the rhythm section does skip nicely at times, so you might be able to say that the album's kind of a bossa-ish session. Material's all original, and quite fresh for Ellington at the time. Titles include "Bonga", "Afro Bossa", "Tigress", and "Puple Gazelle". Concert In The Virgin Islands is a bit straighter, but still very nice -- and has some very interesting "tropical" type tunes -- like "Jungle Kitty", "Fade Up", "Island Virgin", and "Virgin Jungle", as well as some more standard Ellington material.
  21. Looking for this on CD. Know that the Reprise Years on Mosaic contains the lot but was this ever re-issued? Thanks, VG
