  1. Got it on the studio stuff ... it is on the live/broadcast side where I am confused ... (I am presuming the Columbia box is all studio - is that not the case?)
  2. Aside from the set on Fantasy, where else to go for live stuff? It seems pretty confusing ...
  3. I think I have one of the original Columbia CDs ... but nothing else. I have looked at AMG and Amazon, but it is confusing as hell. Plus I suspect there are some Christian nuts here ... so recommend away B)
  4. I don't own a thing by this guy - and Fantasy has reissued a ton of it. Any suggestions on where to start and why? Thanks
  5. There is a thread over at All About Jazz - says Concord is now owned by an entertainment conglomerate (my word - not theirs) owned in part by Norman Lear. Depends on how the deal was financed - Lear and Co could have just given Fantasy a piece of their company as compensation or they could have borrowed to finance part of the deal.
  6. Great CD ... available from CD Baby: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/jsquintet
  7. the Billboard release refers to "eight previous Davis albums" (and seven CDs vs six) on Alan's site ...
  8. Which albums are going to be on this set? Thanks
  9. Wow - that is sad. How does a guy like that get to be 61? Too bad he had to go that way ...
  10. I like it, but would not pay $90. It seems these sides drift in and out of print ... although the Prevue copy will probably have the best sound ...
  11. 20+ Had a buddy in college who turned me on, early 80s. Then took a jazz appreciation class, with an outstanding instructor, and was hooked!!
  12. this might be a useful web site to research this topic ... http://www.trombone-usa.com/jazz-labels_b.htm
  13. Take care Jeff ... and good luck!!!!!!! Eric
  14. can you get any disability/workers comp from the state of GA? if you injured your back on the job ... my sister screwed up her back lifting a box of books at the school she taught at and went down this path ...
  15. someone oughta snag the Bootsy ... it is a funkgasm
  16. up ... anyone know of a Thompson discography online or for sale?
  17. Wow! Two of my all time favorites. I expect better from a fellow Jayhawk! Well ... being a Free Stater ... I can keep an open mind. I own a bunch by both guys ... where do you recommend I initiate the renaissance?
  18. based on this thread, I picked this up ... WOW-SA I like it ...
  19. Dupree Bolten Joe Gordon among the younger guys ... Eddie Allen (brother of Carl - has a nice string of records on Enja and Venus) Marcus Printup (his BN records are inconsistent, but the best parts are great) Duane Eubanks (brother of Kevin and Robin - love his albums on TCB) Philip Harper (where has the guy been - love his work with the Harper Brothers)
  20. Clearly that is where I am coming from with KD, Booker Little and Terrell Stafford. I have a musician/guitarist friend here in KC who loves KD. I have a bunch of his stuff and like his records, but he does not really move me. For me, I think, I don't hear as much of a brassy "bite" or fullness of sound. For both Booker and KD, I hear most of a "pinched" sound that just isn't as much to my liking.
  21. Terrell Stafford - I just cannot warm up to his playing Kenny Dorham - gasp - something is lacking for me Booker Little - ditto, the sort of "running" playing doesn't do it for me
  22. Eric

    lee morgan and who?

Bennie Maupin ... I think there is a real intensity on those later Lee records ...
  23. He was part of the Harper Brothers, who I once saw live and thought they SMOKED. He had a couple albums out on Muse, but nothing since (and AMG shows no activity since). Anyone know?
  24. Larry et al, I have the Wilson on lp and I would recommend you either take a pass or get it cheap. It is just not very good, at least compared to his two Rare Groove CDs or On Broadway, which I have on lp. Groovy just falls flat to me ... it seems as if they tried to come up with something easier to digest than his earlier stuff (not that any of it is hard to digest) ... pretty lightweight IMHO ...
