  1. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/11770647/st-louis-cardinals-oscar-taveras-killed-crash Any 22 year old that dies, is a tragedy ....but somehow seems worse as no one will ever know how good he would have been. I guess the same could be said of anyone that dies young. He was expected to be a superstar. Damn.
  2. Because surely everyone here is a huge fan of Lee Morse, the 20's and 30's singer,....here she is singing in a very LOW voice in 1950! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIF6K-zsxts In case you've been living under a rock, what Lee sounded like in her youth...no one else sounded like her, that's for sure! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_v7jL2Nm5OU
  3. Just can't get too excited about the Giants, they sure know how to win though! No Lincecum(I assume? at least not a major role) and no Matt Cain, and still going to the W.S. Have to root for the Royals this time....Giants do have a thing about winning it all every even year....lately
  4. I thought I was really onto something here, as I didn't see him having credit for the 1929 film Delight Rogue, but I saw the drummer and thought...wow...that really looks like Lionel Hampton! He was in L.A. in 1929...could it be? If it was him, how come no one had caught this before? So....tried my best to take a pic of the tv with phone then digital camera. Neither was very clear and my DVD burner is down...so, was about to upload pic to see what you guys thought, but did a search just on his name and 1929 film and there was a youtube clip! Sadly, you just see him for a few seconds, 3-4 times in this clip, but hey, better than nothing! And playing with an all white band(it appears) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4gcgUN2dVg
  5. Great clip Jim! There has to be more footage like this, but you so rarely see it... The guy leading off for the Cards, Joe Cunningham, hit 343 that year, with a .453 OBP! And…l have never heard of him. I of course have heard of other Cardinals, like Kenny Boyer, Bill White, Tim McCarver was on that team briefly...at the age of 17! How in the wide world of sports could he have been at the majors at 17? I remember he was someone that played in the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80s...but had no idea he was 17 in 59.... I downloaded the clip, as I know how MLB is and takes down stuff all the time...I put on my youtube channel several years ago, a 3-4 minute clip of late 80s highlights from on night on CNN sports and it was deleted a few months later...
  6. Yes, yes, her....eyebrows...always noticed her eyebrows! She was old when she was on Mission Impossible, like mid to late 30s! That's like a hundred for an actress. here she is in the late 50's I believe...I believe she truly got better with age...Eyebrows just didn't have enough experience yet.

  8. Sorry to hear Shane Victorino is going to need season ending back surgery. Does seem like it will give the Red Sox a chance to see what Allen Craig can do for them though... On the subject of Victorino...a "Top Commenter" on ESPN made such a brilliant comment, many fellow commenters felt the need to congratulate him! (can't copy from espn with all the avatars, so via Notepad) Oh, and this guy looks to be in his mid 20s to boot Robert Santana · Top Commenter Play reckless, get hurt. The "Flyin' Hawaiian" has been grounded. If you take care of your body, you'll play baseball for a long time. I've thrown my body around a lot while playing sports and I've never gotten injured. It's all about knowing your limitations and how to land properly. Reply · Unlike · 10 · 3 hours ago Alex Barron In fairness, you have to be in peak physical condition to tutor SATs. It takes grueling hours in the gym to build that kind of stamina. Sure, Victorino has helped two teams to world championships, but does he have what it takes to give study tips to high school kids like our boy Robert? Didn't think so. Reply · Unlike · 10 · Edited · 3 hours ago Andy Kovatch · Top Commenter Alex Barron Valid point. And being a genius, I'm sure our boy Bobby Santana knows EXACTLY how to land when you throw your body around. After all, he is a world renowned athlete! 9. Oh Neal, do I ever!(I started a post on this hours ago, got distracted, left the house, and it got deleted...sigh) anyways...I though for sure this was the Nats year, Starting pitching was so much better than the Braves, then the braves lost Medlen and Beachy...no chance. Got Ervin Santana, got super lucky with Aaron Harang (3.40 ERA right now) still, a patched together rotation that wouldn't scare anyone. A much weaker bullpen. But, for the most part the pitching is fine. It's the complete lack of hitting(at least timely hitting) that keeps the Braves down. Freddie Freeman, a very good, but streaky hitter. Justin Upton, an even more streaky hitter(Still only 26, which amazes me) BJ Upton, who apparently can't hit without astroturf...or something. How can he leave the AL East, and tiny home attendance, and go from a fairly poor, 240-250 hitter, to a hitter that has "improved" this year to a .211 average? 7 HR's and 27 RBi's, and until a month or so ago, wasn't batting leadoff(Batting leadoff, he has actually improved his B.A., sigh... ) 3 more years after this year at 15 mil. Dan Uggla, recently released, (Braves seriously thought someone would trade for him when he was hitting .165?) How did he completely lose the ability to hit? Very odd. It's happened to Andruw Jones, Jeff Francouer, BJ and Uggla while wearing a braves Uni) Jason Heyward. Perhaps the best Right Fielder in the game, but after being the media darling his first year, seems be getting worse and worse at the plate(After 3 hits tonight, he is up to .267, and does look better at the plate) still only 24. But man, after his first season...just not what we expected. Chris Johnson, hitting better, but still way below last year, somewhat expectedly. Andrelton Simmons, great, great SS, but has regressed at the plate, .249 right now. Evan Gattis has 17 HR's and a 280 BA, so not much to complain there (Well, he needs to improve blocking the plate, but then again, Brian McCann never was great at that either) But seriously, does that look like a playoff team??? I know the nats have had injuries, Zimmerman most recently...but I still think they will win in the end. Just surprised they haven't taken off yet....Of course, this probably means the Marlins, even without Jose Fernandez, will go on some huge run and win the division, and break the hearts of the A's in the W.S , Re-reading that post tells me it's too late for me to be posting I feel on the one hand, I should be glad that they are even competing, but one the other, no one is having even close to those career years you see one teams that get into the playoffs, (Most are having below average years) and if they do somehow get in...smoke and mirrors wouldn't even begin to explain it....
  10. No, just relocated to the rehab wing. From http://www.lonestarball.com/2014/7/31/5957241/tanner-scheppers-alexi-ogando-kevin-kouzmanoff-jurickson-profar-all apart from that, Price to the Tigers is a strong move, and glad to see Price with a legit contender. That guy's a player! Not sure if Oakland was smart with the Cespedes deal, though. Boston can throw money to get Lester back in the off-season...time will tell. Oakland has been smart enough and good enough for so long now, I retract the "playing over their heads" suspicion I held about them for too long. It's really amazing how many Rangers have gone down this year, and for the season...kinda surprised that writer didn't briefly mention that Prince Fielder (neck), Matt Harrison (neck), Martin Perez also are done for the year....aren't there even more???? When I first heard the Lester deal, I thought the A's, as much as any team can these days, had punched their ticket to the W.S. Then the Tigers got Price. Now , one of those teams is going to be real disappointed come October. I was going to say that would be the real W.S., but after just seeing the Dodgers sweep the Braves , they will not be a patsy come the W.S. (assuming they make it, don't see any team save the Cards being a real threat to them moving on)
  11. Wow....everyone give up on baseball? Just a few trades today.... Lester to A's, Cespedes to Boston Source: Yankees get SS Drew from Red Sox Cards get Lackey, Craig to Red Sox Nationals acquire SS Cabrera from Indians O's acquire lefty reliever Miller from Red Sox Oh yeah, David Price to the Tigers....

  18. Funny, when you posted the pic, I thought he looked a bit like Leslie Nielsen... I too stumbled across him, more for the name...I think the cable channel TV Guide(or something like that) ran half hour best of Johnny Carson shows a few years back, and I would hear Ed McMahon announce the guests for the clip show..and was forever hearing Peter Leeds...who is that? I would say to myself. Myself didn't know...so I had to dig around. Makes one wonder...the 8000 shows...sorta like when I read about the 24 gazillion records(more or less) that Chick Bullock was supposedly on...No proof of the fact, but there it is in black and white. I see he was part of the Mighty Carson Art players. Just see how many times his name comes up in 1975 alone....hmmm, perhaps 8000 shows isn't too far off!
  19. So, there is this team in the NL. 5th best starter has a 2.93 ERA. the 23 Year old "ace" has the 4th best ERA, 1.80. 3rd best ERA is by another 23 Y.O. who came up last year, 1.54. A 31 Y.O. that no one wanted to sign for 14 Mil(and lose a draft pick to boot) was signed after 2/5ths of the planned starters went down with Tommy Johnitis..(Lost another for a month do to wang surgery).has a serviceable 0.86 ERA. Then, there is the scrape heap guy , 36...5.76 ERA for the Mariners last year... 0.85 this year. Yep, the braves piecemeal rotation of David Hale, Julio Teheran, Alex Wood, Ervin Santana and Aaron Harang , have pitched just a bit better than any Braves fan could have hoped for . I didn't think this team, losing Kris Medlin, Brandon Beachy, and Mike Minor for a month or so, could even play .500 ball. Clearly, the Nats would run away and hide with the NL East division. When Minor comes back, Hale will have to go down...but, the braves also signed Gavin Floyd , who is coming back from...TJ surgery of course. If he's ready, who does he replace? And...who gets the credit for these players? Santana turned things around last year in K.C. but Harang was terrible in Seattle. (did pitch better for a month with the Mets at the end of the year) Is Roger McDowell a miracle worker? I didn't like Harang's stuff 5 years ago in Cincy...now, 5 years later, he looks like a completely different pitcher, with much better stuff...Alex Wood was very good in AA last year, but when he came up...he did ok, but didn't look like more than a #5 or #4. And the Nats may still go on a run when the braves cool off, but so far so good. Looked bad on paper, very bad. Like a last place team's rotation. Guess that's why they play the games
