  1. Celtic fan since the 1960’s when I listened under the covers with a transistor radio. Thrilled with the changes to this year’s team. OTOH, this core better be good enough because they will be in cap jail when they extend Jrue Holiday. I can hardly believe I don’t miss Marcus Smart.
  2. Link: https://richardvacca.com/serge-chaloff-the-capitol-sessions/
  3. I see Richard Vacca has some mentions here for having a book about the Boston jazz scene. I stumbled onto to his site and twenty minutes later was listening to a 1965 recording of Jimmy Mosher taped from a broadcast by WGBH. Originally got there through a searching Serge Chaloff, Vacca has a nice blog entry about Chaloff’s two Capitol dates. Anyway, interesting site.
  4. Just listened to most of disc 1 this morning, there is some significant distortion on track 13 at the end of the tenor solo at about 1:10. Anybody else notice this?
  5. Doing this from memory but Byas has one side of, I believe, Americans in Europe vol 2 on Impulse. I’ve already told my wife I want I Remember Clifford from this played at my funeral. There are also some decent JATP sides with Byas and others, Getz and Hawkins I think among others.
  6. I will also definitely be getting this set. I used to grab anything that had Byas on it. Anyone care to speculate what a Byas as sideman from before 1944 would look like as far as the number of discs ?
  7. Another undersung Muse date is Cindy Blackman’s The Oracle with Gary Bartz, Kenny Barron, and Ron Carter. Fast company.
  8. I don’t have any pertinent information but if you google bibliophile forum several will come up. That’s where I would begin to look for the info you seek. And congratulations, looks like a great find.
  9. The Columbia Legacy edition, 2 discs, includes demos and outtakes with Gram Parsons vocals along with 6 tracks of the International Submarine Band.
  10. As mentioned in another thread here, try Mighty Sam McClain.
  11. So happy to see the rec for Mighty Sam McClain, he was terrific. I’d second ‘60’s and into early ‘70’s Paul Butterfield too. Another guy you might check out is Joe Louis Walker, try Live at Slim’s vol 1 or vol 2.. From Paul Rishell & Annie Raines try Swear to Tell the Truth (listed as by Paul Rishell). From Ronnie Earl try Grateful Heart with healthy doses of David Fathead Newman sitting in. One more, Pacific Northwest session guitarist Terry Robb tends to share a lot of styles on his releases. One I keep coming back to is Heart Made of Steel.
  12. Willis Gatortail Jackson. For the longest time I only had one of his dates on Muse, then I kept seeing additional titles for cheap that I couldn’t pass up.
  13. Watched Stanley Kubrick’s “The Killing” this morning.
  14. I’ve only become aware of British reedman Alan Barnes in the last few years. Solid mainstream guy who sounds equally a home on baritone, tenor and alto. Was listening today to a date he co-led with fellow reedman John Hallam and what I presume is an all Brit rhythm section. I see has quite a few dates out on the Woodville label, additional recommendations welcome.
  15. Another record released near the end of 1973 that I liked then and now, Jerry Jeff Walker, Viva Terlingua.
  16. I believe the Santana/McLaughlin Love, Devotion, and Surrender was released in 1973. I remember it being popular with my friends but I didn’t get into it at the time. Now I like it but I enjoy some of their live shows floating around more.
  17. Re: Mosaic packaging, so glad they did away with the hinge, should have been that way from the beginning. The two boxsets I sort of regret buying are the Mosaic Woody Herman Mars recordings (haven’t found the music as compelling as I’d hoped) and the 75 disc Jazz in Paris. I’ll probably keep both though and I do dip into the JiP set periodically. Maybe I’ll appreciate it more over time.
