    RIP Duck Dunn

Just heard this and checked online. BBC Reports Duck was on tour in Japan and died in his sleep.
  2. Missing from that AMG list of credits is "I Want You Back" by the J5. Wilton is smokin' on fender bass. BTW - He plays an old style precision - the kind made before the 1957 change to the current precision bass.
  3. "Think". I bought the 45 of that tune sometime in the early 60s. A little quicker tempo and a great tenor solo by Maxwell Davis. When it was reissued on cd I realized how much better I liked the 45 mono mix than the the stereo mix on the cd.
  4. How does that work? I mean, if my eyes got better w/o glasses, Id be thrilled. But you're saying no? For some reason I had a suspicion (turned out to be correct) that improving vision meant something (like a cataract) was acting like a lens. So far I'm getting no negative effect. The cataract is not coloring my vision but the eye with the cataract is now nearly 20/20 and my glasses are weird. Almost no rx in one eye and a strong Rx in the other. I'm lucky that works for me. The doc told me that there was a good chance it wouldn't and that would necessitate the cataract surgery.
  5. My cousin had cataract surgery a few months ago and said it was no hassle. Not like it used to be. About a year ago I noticed my without glasses vision improving. I thought "this can't be good." Sure enough my eye Dr. told me I have the beginnings of a cataract but he would wait until it was "ripe" before any surgery. He told me the surgery was now very simple with no after effects.
  6. Very nice Big Al! You've hit the nail on the head! BTW - Check out the dates we all joined - the old BNBB guys are March 03.
  7. Sorry to hear this..right on top of Red Holloway's passing. Red's Dream.... plus....
  8. They were LA based and mostly guys with day gigs (with a ringer here or there)at the Disney studios. Kind of intentionally over the top dixieland but done well. the label name "Good Time Jazz" fits very well. I have all those lps but went for the MP3 download box set to put them on my iPod. I enjoy them in small doses (iPod on shuffle is perfect) but I particularly dig their versions of "Frankie and Johnny" and "Copenhagen."
  9. Amos had a sign on the door in the entrance foyer. It said "No talking while the musicians are playing."
  10. RIP AMOS! I know most of you don't know who I'm talking about but if anybody ever deserved a fond farewell on a jazz board it was Amos. Amos ran Gulliver's (In West Paterson)in the 70's and 80's and before that the Clifton Tap Room (in the 60's). They were great jazz rooms in northern New Jersey - featuring all the big jazz names on the weekends and at least one other night during the week and local jazzers the other nights. EVERYBODY worked at one time or another for Amos and there was never a club owner who was more respectful or generous to musicians. I worked for him more times than I could count and was never treated better. On nights when I wasn't gigging and was just hanging Amos always would whisper in the bartender's ear and when I went to pay the bill I would hear "Amos said it's on him." Same for all the local jazz musicians. Always great for late night conversation and as hip as could be. I'm so sorry to hear this.
  11. He may have seen this already but just in case he hasn't - there's a fair amount of JPJ talked about in Max Kaminsky's "My Life In Jazz."
  12. RIP Etta. A day after Johnny Otis, her first producer.
  13. Count me in as a big fan of Edmond Hall. One of the greats. Funny thing as regards Herb - years ago I used to think they sounded alike. Not now. ?? Check out some Benny Goodman stuff from the thirties and early forties. When Benny growls he sounds an awful lot like Edmond. One side like this that comes to mind is Benny's "Royal Garden Blues."
  14. Heard from a friend that percussionist and Songwriter Ralph MacDonald passed today.
