  1. Lionel Hampton - Lionel Plays Drums, Vibes, Piano
  2. Just a random thought: classical music has long been the final frontier for me, i have a few dozen albums but the thought of getting anywhere with it in terms of buying CDs... it's like, i can't even fathom starting from scratch with such a huge genre again. I don't want to go there. The thought of making my exploration of classical a streaming adventure from the outset is very appealing. It feels like a weight off. It's liberating. I could keep a diary or spreadsheet to keep track of what i've heard, document it. Could pick up the odd favourite here and there... maybe i'll finally get in to vinyl, make it 'streaming and vinyl' for me with classical. Anyway, just thinking aloud.
  3. True, it doesn't have to be, but for me it tends to be. But yeah, part of the beauty of streaming is that there's nothing stopping you from clicking on 'save' and having that album sit in your library. On several occasions i've had an album saved to my library that i wasn't really in to on first listen, but it costs you nothing to save it, and i've kept revisiting it here and there and finally bought a physical copy. I'm a believer that you can be zen about it and be like what difference does it make whether you hear it from a CD or beaming from outer space, and i believe that i can potentially get there one day and that the younger generation that's growing up with it is likely already there, but i'm yet to be able to sit down and listen to a stream of an album from start to finish on release day and get the same impact that i get from listening to a new CD when i receive it. I can see that it's arguably silly, but i just can't get around it yet. Goes without saying but worth noting that straight up not everything is available for streaming.
  4. I use iTunes for my digital files (ripped from CDs in ALAC) but i haven't tried their streaming service. I don't want to mess something up and have my files replaced/lost. Probably not a real concern but i just prefer to not have to worry about it. Just want to keep it nice and clear cut as possible (local files only, end of). I've used Spotify's free service for a few years. I'm edging closer to paying for it, simply because i'm slowly warming to it and the free service on mobile phone is limited (can't skip songs, can't choose song etc). Streaming for me is not the be all and end all but it's a nice 'other' option. You can be browsing Organissimo forums for example on your phone while sitting on the couch, see some interesting album mentioned and look it up and be listening in seconds (i'm one of those phone = transistor radio people). It's great for checking stuff out and deciding if i want to buy. Also great for revisiting long lost albums that i don't really need to own again but are nice to hear again for nostalgic reasons. I have definitely noticed an odd phenomena, where i will listen to something on Spotify and i don't really dig it, but i end up buying it anyway and REALLY enjoying it then. Something about owning the album just makes it more enjoyable for some reason. I keep this in mind when 'judging' stuff: can't necessarily judge an album by a cursory stream.
  5. Hank Mobley and His All Stars via the Mobley Mosaic box On a bit of Milt Jackson kick at the moment. Was browsing his wikipedia page and noticed this album listed in the discography section. It's been a while since i've listened to the Mobley box and i wasn't particularly conscious of there being some Bags on there. Was probably a little bit too overjoyed to look it up and find that it was included in the box; listening now and loving it. I love it when something like that happens.
  6. Yup. It would probably cost the rights holders more money to have somebody spend time on it than what they would make from it.
  7. Yes! Cover art and personnel visible here: https://stevecoleman.bandcamp.com/album/morphogenesis
  8. Bump. Have been listening to Crowe's albums with Walt Dickerson lately. It's astounding that these were apparently his only recordings.

Just bumping to say that the more i think about it, the more excited i'm getting for the new album. Liberty Ellman meets JD Allen, there's huge potential for awesomeness there. Trying to keep my expectations in check and all that. I'm dying to hear some samples if anyone comes across any.
  10. I quite like the gazette, it is what it is. Only minor quibble is that the links in the email just take you to the Mosaic site rather than to the specific article (first world problems etc), but i wouldn't lay a formal complaint about it or anything.
  11. Hutchfan, have you heard 'Here Comes Earl "Fatha" Hines', a trio recording with Elvin Jones and Richard Davis? I really like it but i haven't heard enough Hines to know whether it's a 'good Hines album' if you know what i mean. Cheers.
  12. Well, looks like the Mobley set was there until the end! Of the sets currently available, i'm getting a few pangs about the Hines but i'm okay. I don't want it enough to put strain on the finances (if i did, i would). Just another endorsement for the Benedetti: so glad that i have it. The idea of it always fascinated me, i jumped for joy when it finally came off backorder. As i mentioned in the deleted thread, Mosaics have always been a luxury item for me, a special treat with an emphasis on the 'special'. I never even really considered them until the Threadgill came out and i HAD to have it. I'm very happy with the 10 sets i have, very very grateful to have them in my collection.
  13. It is hard to keep up. I've unintentionally settled on having a selection of artists that i follow, and even then i cherry pick which of their releases are essential to me. And that leads me to the problem of: am i genuinely open to recommendations outside of the artists that i'm already following and/or are already in the sphere of artists that i'm following? Yes and no i guess but definitely not as much as i should be these days.
  14. Nick Mazzarella & Tomeka Reid - Signaling Arrived today, loving it.
  15. Last night: MJQ - Django This really hit the spot last night.

Awesome news! Thanks for posting this. Wow, Liberty Ellman with the JD Allen trio... definitely an interesting combo. Reading back through the thread, crazy that three years has gone by.
  17. True. And yeah, i've often thought that the ability to 'figure it out for yourself' via the internet is kind of a conversation killer. In the 'early days' of the internet i imagine that it would have been quite cool with people coming together online on forums to try and suss stuff out. In fact, you often don't have to look far as the answer to your question is often found in an old thread right here. Case closed before it got started. Cue Bruce Hornsby singing "that's just the way it is..."
  18. Speaking for myself, the main reason i posted in this thread was to give like minded people a heads up about interesting upcoming releases, but it feels a bit redundant at this point as: - The people that are interested are probably subscribed to the same email lists from the labels and/or check the same label etc websites that i do. - The people that aren't interested, aren't interested. I still have a huge amount of enthusiasm for new releases, and it's cool to share that but that itch usually gets scratched in the 'Listening To' thread or some other random artist or recommendation thread.
  19. Keefe Jackson & Jason Adasiewicz - Rows and Rows This one again...
