  1. Hi all,

I'm selling a spare CD copy of Dogon A.D.

    International Phongraph reissue.

    It's factory sealed as new.

At the time of release i had an order that never arrived, so i ordered a second copy and both copies ended up arriving.

It's been kept in a closed cupboard away from dust and sunlight. Home is smoke-free and has an air system that controls humidity.

I'm looking for $45 USD or near offer + shipping.

I'm in NZ so shipping is relatively costly.

Air mail (3-10 working days) will be $15 USD.

International courier (tracked + signature required - 2-6 working days) will be $35 USD.

    Pay by Paypal.

    Please PM me if interested.

    Thanks for looking, cheers.

  2. My copy arrived yesterday.

Haven't listened all the way through (Roscoe Mitchell's Ride The Wind also arrived yesterday and... wow) but sound is good to my ears, certainly no complaints (i haven't heard previous releases to compare, sorry).

Packaging is typical Japanese-excellent: gatefold mini LP-style, made from quality card stock, comes in a plastic resealable sleeve, CDs are housed safely in 'cloth' sleeves.

Took a couple of pictures. There's a booklet but apart from song titles it's all in Japanese. No mention of remaster from what i can see.

If you're like me and don't/didn't have these recordings, i highly recommend.

  3. At home on a rainy day... catching up on a few things and not really sure what i felt like listening to... i don't reach for either of these often but they sure hit the spot today for some reason:

    The Magnificent Thad Jones

    Chick Corea - Children's Songs

This year i'm sort of planning to acquire less new music and instead spend time rediscovering what's already in my collection.

  4. I have 7 of his leader dates spanning 1959-1973. I like the more overtly Latin stuff the best, especially the early stuff. For me it pays to think of him as being his own weird thing rather than someone that was in competition with the jazz Blue Note/Prestige/etc scene of the 50s and 60s. It's hard to define what makes a Mann album i like versus one that i don't. Some albums have more corny tracks than others. Definitely a 'like him for what he is rather than dislike him for what he isn't' situation for me. I think First Light is a gem from the 70s, especially if you are down for some Sesame Street funk in places.

FWIW, Memphis Underground was Hunter S Thompson's number 1 album of the sixties ("... may be the best album ever cut by anybody")http://www.openculture.com/2017/05/hear-the-10-best-albums-of-the-1960s-as-selected-by-hunter-s-thompson.html

I believe it is not only about USD 50 at all - each and every donation is important to help maintaining the board .... btw Jim confirmed in a earlier post that the donation goal was met for 2017 ....

It's about contributing what you can, when you are able. We have enough members for whom $50 USD (and even more) is not a huge deal.  Every bit helps and no one should think that $50 is some minimum contribution.

    Cheers guys. :tup

I remember it coming out on the Pablo LP - it was unexpected, at least over here. I think the story was that there was one copy presented to Her Maj so although known about, it wasn’t anticipated as a public release.

It certainly got radio airplay over here but I don’t recall it being a big seller. I still have my Pablo casette of this one !

Cheers. So it seems like at least to the wider fandom it wasn't a holy grail in the years prior to it's release.

  7. Don't want to seem unappreciative but i'm not gonna lie, $50 USD is a lot of money for me. I'm down for at least $20 USD before end of first half 2018, will see after that. Slightly concerned about the ongoing viability of this method of keeping things going (if we hadn't met 2017's target, which seemed like a distinct possibility, would that have been it for the board?) but i know that it's best to act in good faith and contribute.

  8. Question regarding The Queen's Suite if anyone that was around at the time gets a chance: how anticipated was it's release? Were people clamouring for it or did it just kind of come out? Was the 'backstory' widely known in the years prior to it's release? Cheers.

  9. Been on an Ellington listening binge, just hopping around all eras. Just finished reading A Portrait of Duke Ellington by Derek Jewell and am getting in to The Duke Ellington Reader which has been sitting on my shelf for a while waiting for the right time. So i'm kind of immersed at the moment, and just loving it.
