  1. thanks for the links! yes, i agree. no guitar workshop in rotterdam. those are fascinating documents btw. seems that neither miles nor taylor were well-received.

edit: here is berlin 1969. no guitar workshop either

    http://www.berlinerfestspiele.de/de/chronicle/jazzfest/index/?finder%5B_req%5D=1&finder%5Bfulltext%5D=&finder%5Bmusik%5D=&finder%5Btitle%5D=&finder%5Byear%5D=1969&search=Suche

edit2: the allstars basel gig was recorded by MPS, including burrell. so probably a single concert by the allstars, no guitar workshop.

  2. i'm looking forward to finding out about no.5. trumpet sounds indeed a bit like terry but it's somebody else. and there are two guitarists. soloist is a clean picker with strong chops, maybe an older bopper who incooperated some more modern material. sounds a bit like billy bean in the 80s. intriguing.

  3. ok, this is what we got so far:

in 1969 there was a package called "newport in europe". part of "newport in europe" package were the "newport allstars" and the "guitar workshop". we know that the color vid of the all-stars was shot in paris (wein speaks french on that tape). we see the stage also set up for the "guitar workshop". so at least one paris concert (possibly nov. 1st) was a double bill. we then have another (bigger?) venue in paris where the b/w vid was shot. but there is no hint that the allstars also played that gig (no vibes on stage). (date unkown)

earlier we got the color clip from ronnie scott's (edit: confirmed) and info from the bbc site that a GG trio video from ronnie scott did exist at some point. edit: oct 28.

we also know that both burrell and kessel were present in basel (oct 29) and stockholm (nov 3 or 4). does that mean that burrell played with the allstars because the guitar workshop was not scheduled there? basel was between london and paris so grant might at least have played there as well?

edit: grant falling in for farlow confirmed

    what we need:

more general info on the fall 1969 newport in europe tour

photos or vids from the other newport allstars gigs to determine whether the stage was set up for the workshop as well.

a program from the jazz expo in london and the newport in paris festival.

programs from the other dates (berlin, rotterdam, etc)

Where was this 1969 color French Newport All Stars footage shot?

very interesting. there are three guitar amps ready for the guitar workshop. but it's not the same venue as the GG b/w video (and two different amps)

Did "Newport in Europe" perform on TV in more countries than London and France?  If they swung through more countries, perhaps there are more pro-shot 2 inch videotapes that have survived of Green.

here's what i got from the ruby braff discography:

    newport all-stars:

    oct 24 1969 ronnie scotts

    oct 27  royal albert hall

oct 29  basel (burrell is mentioned)

nov 1   paris (ellington also played that night, could the guitar workshop really have played a 90 min set as well?)

    nov 2 copenhagen

nov 3 or 4 (?) stockholm (burrell is mentioned)

    nov 5 rotterdam

    nov 8 berlin

so grant possibly appeared with the "guitar workshop"? what was the format of newport in europe? apparently there was a festival in london (jazz expo). did the guitar workshop travel along to the other venues? there is no mention of grant in the braff book.

edit: the nov 1 in paris must have been something else. wasn't mobley also there with byas and shepp?

I got this one, for the Joe Williams session which is quite nice.

joe louis has got additional "navy swings" sessions with wes:

there was even a tv broadcast with wes, terry and the pim jacobs quartet (including guitarist wim overgaauw trading fours with wes).

sadly that tape is said to not have survived.

Great detective work!  If recorded in October / November, then Blue Note / EMI likely own rights to Green's performances on the 1969 videos.

I've wondered if more videotape footage of Green survives from the London gig.  Your analysis suggests more might have been recorded.

Did "Newport in Europe" perform on TV in more countries than London and France?  If they swung through more countries, perhaps there are more pro-shot 2 inch videotapes that have survived of Green.

Is Resonance the best label to release this sort of stuff?  Seems like Blue Note is dead in terms of publishing archival material.

the newport in europe dates can be found here:

i assume that the tv stations actually do own the copyrights. personally i don't think the paris session is good enough for official release. don lamond is a total mismatch. and i wish you love is a trainwreck, ruined by kessel and ridley up to the very last note where they leave grant hanging in mid air, until kessel finally finds the most inappropriate ending chord (A over grant's Eb), much to the dismay of grant.

Wow!  Green's first recording survived.  Has Resonance or Cuscuna (Mosaic) got wind of this?

By the way, does anyone know the performances dates of the 1969 London and Paris video recordings?   If Green was already under contract to Blue Note (I think Carryin On was recorded in October 1969 -- so he was presumably under contract by that time), then Blue Note Records may own the rights to Green's  Paris and London performances.  I'd presume the Paris entity that taped the show owns the rights to the video recording itself.  It would be cool if Blue Note could work a deal to get access to the master 2" quadruplex tapes and issue a video release and companion compact disc.  From the bootleg dub Greg Green is selling on payloadz you can tell the audio of the Paris concert was very well recorded (great mono recording).

iit seems that the 1969 gigs were part of the "newport in europe" package. the newport all-stars played ronnie scott's on oct 24 1969 and paris nov 1st 1969. although there is no mention of grant or burrell, those dates seem likely. i wonder how grant ended up with that tour and what his status was.

the ronnie scotts video is mentioned here. the program aired dec. 26 1969:

this is a preview for the 1970 "jazz scene" and a further search reveals this interesting item:

so maybe there is another 45 min set by grant?

Some more detail on the 70s funk TV footage.  Someone posted this on the Hoffman forum a couple of years ago:

"There's footage of Grant Green from 1976 when he was on the Gino Washington Show in Detroit on Channel 62. He was the special guest on that weekly show for about a month. GG Jr. is talking about releasing a video of a funk type concert of Grant's...hopefully that's the footage that he's talking about."

The outtake is on a compilation CD produced in the early 1990s:    Together - The Eastbound Jazz Years  (Beat Goes Public CD BGPD 071)

thanks. i'll try and track it down.

Yeah, the Sharony book was half-baked.

I think "GG jr" is really Greg Green and he goes by the stage name "Grant Green Jr" which must be odd as Grant Sr. has another son whose real name is Grant Green Jr.  I think Sharony was married to the real Grant Green Jr (not the older brother Greg who uses the Grant Green Jr. stage name).  Confusing.

Anyway, Greg Green's Facebook page (which is Grant Green Jr) had an update on the 1970s funk video back in 2015.

For a couple of years, he's been charging money for a low resolution dub of the 1969 Paris video that he presumably doesn't own the rights to.  He sort of implies the money he is collecting is going to help him get this other 70s video.  That's cool if it happens.  But it's been two years.   Presumably, he isn't sharing the money he gets from the 69 clip with the other musicians in the 1969 clip or their families.  Unclear if he is sharing the money from the 69 video with his other brother (the real Grant Green Jr.)

The 1969 Paris video is great.  It would be awesome to see a professionally published higher resolution transfer from the source videotapes instead of Greg's Payloadz dub.  It would be cool if Cuscuna's Jazz Icons series or Resonance would publish a legit release of the 69 video.

    Grant Green Jr

I'm getting close to funding the new Grant Green funk video, This will be the final video, it was shot in 70's and in color with afros and bellbottoms, This has been one of my goals to get footage of him because was none and these two are the only that exist, as a youngster this is how I remember him playing, and going home to try to mimic him, These videos are rare there was no footage of him until these finds, So I'm asking my facebook friends to post this on your facebook page, I'm going to drop the price to the Grant Green Live in Paris to 5.99 to get this done and those who purchased the video leave a message at payloadz.com keyword Grant Green and I will send you the free audio the direct link is http://store.payloadz.com/go?id=2119321 here is another clip

i'd be surprised if the paris video sold more than a few hundred copies (probably less). a youtube channel with unreleased GG has been mentioned upstream. mindblowing stuff for GG fans, the average view count is well below one-hundred for the gooden's corner session reel tunes. so i don't think GG jr is robbing anyone. still an official release would be nice, especially since the part with burrell and kessel does still exist afaik.

any idea how to get hold of the "lester leaps in" eastbound track?

Given the extensive live performances Green gave in the 70s, I'm surprised no soundboards from club venues have surfaced.  In the new Bob Porter book, he mentions seeing Green perform a stunning version of John Coltrane's "Impressions" at a live venue in the 1970s.

The 15 minute previously unreleased outtake "Lester Leaps In" was published for the first time on a compilation compact disc in the early 1990s.  This suggests tapes of unreleased material from these live 1973 Person shows survived.  Who owns the Eastbound jazz label these days?

There's a documentary being released I guess this year.  Maybe they will include it in that.  From the trailer, it looks like a bunch of talking head interviews from the late 90s conducted for the Sharony Andrews Green book.

i don't think the movie will contain any new footage. it will probably be not more than a documentary about writing the book (which wasn't very good tbh).

iirc GG jr had some sort of kickstarter campaign for the color funk video.

  12. any news on the 1974 (?) GG colour vid that GG jr was planning to release after the paris video?

also, has anyone ever attempted to create a list which unissued items from grant have actually surfaced over the years? has anyone here ever heard the charlie rouse or gene harris session?

  13. yes, that is really undecided. i'm very impressed with wes' playing on that recording. for me the highlights are caravan, all the things and after you've gone. the bright tempos and wes' nice bright pre-riverside sound (despite the mediocre sound quality) make this a very enjoyable record. four gets a very interesting bluesy treatment. we also get wes on four-string fender bass.
