  2. With the competitors whizzing across land and through the air and water, the Triathlon is Event # 9 in this year's Marble League. This race proves to be an exciting one and the final outcome is determined by a photo finish. As a Crazy Cat's Eyes fan though, i gotta say, "We wuz robbed!". Some lousy, biased officiating and a major soccer league worthy "performance" by Rojo Tres of the Rojo Rollers.put a taint on the outcome of this event. A taint, I say!
  3. I saw a touring production of this show with Ms. Bacall and Mr. Guardino in San Francisco in the mid-1980's. It was based on the old Tracy - Hepburn movie, only in this version she is a famous TV journalist while he is a newspaper cartoonist. It was an enjoyable show, if not exactly a classic musical. No real standout songs and the most memorable number on stage involved the cartoonist singing a duet with an animated version of the feline star of his comic strip. Even from the cheap balcony seats, Ms. Bacall looked fabulous.
  4. Disc 1 of 2, which includes the albums Tenors West (the tenors being Bob Cooper, Bob Enevoldsen and Jimmy Giuffre) and Take Me Along (with the pianos of Mr. Paich, Jimmy Rowles, Johnny Williams and Pete Jolly).
  5. Pianist Tee Carson, who served as accompanist for Ella Fitzgerald and subbed for Count Basie in the big band, was a U.S. Marshal. First Herbie Man. Now this. I never want to see a jazz musician's nipples ever again!

  7. On YouTube, episodes from the golden 1960's era of Password. What a great show that was. It's kind of a delight/relief to find out some star you have long enjoyed is also pretty smart/quick-thinking under pressure. Carol Burnett was a very good Password player. Elizabeth Montgomery also showed she was smart as well as beautiful in this game. And I love Allen Ludden's knowing takes to the camera when some one gives a particularly dumb clue or response. And the 1960's-ness of it all -- like Allen Ludden saying to Peter Lawford as the show returned from commercial, "Put your cigarette out, Pete". You just don't get that kind of real life on game shows today!
  8. Well, it is a lovely little song. I'm guessing it was included as the final piece on the disc since the song ends with "Goodbye". Here is an excellent interpretation of that song: Not every one's holidays are "merry and bright". There are also occasions when the vocal track on an otherwise instrumental album is perhaps the most moving piece on the disc. Case in point:

  10. Saw this on TV the other night. Without the presence of Marlon Brando, I'm pretty sure this overwrought Southern fired drama would be utterly forgotten today. Joanne Woodward is very good as one of Mr. Williams' semi-crazy Southern belle spitfires.
  11. Teamwork and pure physical force are the ingredients for victory in Event # 8 -- Block Pushing. We are now halfway through the events of this year's Marble League games. Two teams have pretty healthy positions atop the overall points total board, but there are still about a half dozen teams who have a chance of pulling into contention with strong performances in the second half of the events. Sadly, after a particularly embarrassing performance in this event, my Crazy Cat's Eyes are not among them.
  12. Is that really a bowl full of packs of cigarettes on the table? Maybe it was Halloween and Ol' Blue Eyes was waiting for the trick-or-treaters to start showing up.

  14. A fine album with Pepper Adams, Bill Watrous, Roger Kellaway, Richard Davis and Mel Lewis.
