  3. Good lord! I had no idea how pedantic some people could be. I think people know what "corny" means, even if we disagree as to what things are corny. Meanings of terms are not the same as extensions of terms. Do people really ask for a definition when someone says something is "corny"? How about "cutesy", "kitchy", "pornography", or even "good"? Our traffic in terms involving evaluations would come to a screeching halt if people are as uncomprehending as some are pretending to be. The other day, I read an interview in which Lee Konitz described Benny Carter's playing on a record as "corny". The interviewer did not stop and say he doesn't understand.
  4. Right. Some pianists -- e.g. Brad Mehldau -- seem to cross the line all the time. And I personally find the late recordings by some of my favorite horn players -- like Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, and even Lee Konitz now and then -- very hard to listen to because they cross the line. But people like Steve Lacy never do, no matter how emotional they get.
  5. I am looking for piano trio recordings with pianists who pour forth emotions, and hence should be corny, but somehow avoid being corny. I have in mind people like Bill Evans and Bill Charlap. Can you think of others?

  11. The sound seems really good on this set. None of the hysterical, super-souped-up sound of some of the recent remasters that just tires you out. Whoever did this should get more opportunities to remaster old recordings. And the playing is wonderful. This is my favorite Stan Getz period, and it is really good to finally have the Interpretations sessions.
  12. I've been going to Encore since I was in grad school in Ann Arbor, and still visit regularly as my girlfriend teaches at UM. I will miss Peter who has always been very friendly and ready with recommendations and advice about recordings. I think at least about 30% of my collection is from Encore. Nothing like being stuck on a paper or a dissertation chapter, and getting a break from it by going to Encore to browse. I would run into friends, my professors, my mailman, etc. Oh I hope they stay open...
  13. Thanks for all the instructive posts. I just noticed that one side of the LP is a lot thicker than the opposite side. Oy vey! This LP collecting business, which I started about 4 months ago, is much more of a touch-and-go than I expected. Sound is clearly better and more natural than on CDs, but a lot of trouble. I am beginning wonder whether I should have gotten into it. But those Pee Wee Russell and Gerry Mulligan records sound so marvelous!!
  14. I just got this Steve Lacy LP from an eBay seller, and the LP seems to have been made quite poorly -- all kinds of subtle indentations and imperfections on the vinyl surface. They seem to be manufacturing defects. Now, I am wondering whether this is something to be expected in BYG LPs of the early 1970s. The sound reflects these imperfections, with little bits of thumps in various spots, and a second or two of "warble" in one spot. I like the recording and would like to keep it if this is what one should expect from these LPs. Otherwise, if I have a particularly bad copy, I'd like to try to send it back to the seller. Thanks in advance.
  15. Nor mine. This is a good set. Yeah, I was a drummer and maybe I enjoy the drumming aspects a bit more than others may, but there is much swinging jazz here to get excited about. I truly like this eet more than I expected to, and am glad I've had it a few years. I second this. I like it very much and 'm glad I have it. It's on running low now together with the Johnny Smith set. Sorry for mixing up Jimmy and Johnny. There is no Jimmy Smith set that could go out of print. Thanks folks. I guess I may be getting it.
  16. I too am curious about this set. What I am afraid of is that the set will be mostly drum solos with some insertions of music in between.
  17. I don't see "Dedicated to Connie" on this list. That was a concert recorded in Lubjana, Slovenia in 1960 but issued many years later (unless it is one of these and reissued under a different title?). Likewise, their later Atlantic albums like "Blues on Bach" are not here or later concert albums like "The Last Concert," but I assume you're only including material issued at the time that's more or less covered by the period of the set. gregmo As the thread title says the set will only include studio recordings. Yes Hans, but the poster listed the live albums too and asked if his list was complete. I was responding to that query. gregmo The description by Mosaic indicates that the 2 Music Inn sessions will be included. Perhaps those are studio sessions.
  18. Apparently the Mosaic Getz will not include the 1952 sides that the Hip-O Select 3CD-set has. I've asked Mosaic about this. I will post their reply in the Getz thread. Very helpful. Thanks, Hans.
  19. Hip-O or its parent company probably holds the copyright, and was willing to let Mosaic do the LPs to coincide with its own CD release. I've been wanting these "Interpretations" recordings for a while, and am happy that they are coming out. Some of them were available in Japanese CDs, but not all. And the only other alternative was buying very expensive or very scratched-up LPs.
  20. This is fantastic news. After the Jamal set, I was hoping for a John Lewis set. And this is equally good. Now, I have to make up my mind as to whether to get the Stan Getz CD set or the LP set. A happy dilemma.
  21. I know. But I found a couple of items that seem reasonable.
  22. If anyone has experience ordering from this place, could you let me know how reliable their grading of vinyl and covers is, and how pleased you were with the experience overall? Thanks.
