  2. Does anyone know this record? I've been listening to Dickerson's OJC recordings and like them a lot. And I am a big fan of the movie "Lawrence of Arabia", including the music. But the LP seems fairly uncommon and quite expensive when listed on eBay. Wanted to ask people's opinions before taking the plunge.
  3. Have and like it! Esp. Sun Ra's piano playing. Thanks everyone. I am keen to hear the 1960's stuff first, so will try to get "Lawrence" and "Unity".
  4. The Best Jazz of 2014

Hush Point, "Blues & Reds" (Sunnyside) Another beauty from John McNeil! Hope he keeps on recording in the new year.

  6. I recently saw copies of this at a local record store. I have "Cornell 1964", "Great Concert", and plan to pick up the Mosaic set one of these days. Would people say that "Revenge" is sufficiently good and/or different to make it still worth picking up?
  7. Sonny Clark's springy intro to "Deep Night" in "Cool Struttin'" Elmo Hope's cubist breakdown of the theme in "Polkadots & Moonbeams" in "Informal Jazz" Herbie Hancock on "Autumn Leaves" in Miles Davis's "In Europe" Bill Charlap's interplay with the bass & drums when they first join him in "Blue Skies" in New York Trio's "Blues in the Night"
  8. Death of the iPod (Everyone's buying vinyl)

I have a 6G 160gig IPod Classic that I love very much, especially when I travel, and it's been having some problems that led me to think that I may need to replace it soon. Then 2 days after the recent Apple announcements, I found out that iPod Classic was discontinued. I panicked and scoured the web and local stores. Most places said they no longer have any, but a kindly manager of a local Radio Shack found one 7G 160gig at a distant store and requested that it be sent to her store. Meanwhile, I ordered another one on the Best Buy website. (Apparently, some guy had been driving around the SF area and buying up all available 160 gig iPod Classics, presumably to sell on eBay or such.) I thought at best, I would get one of two in, and in fact received a message from Best Buy shortly after my order saying that they no longer have it. But both arrived in the last 2 days. Now, I have a big dilemma. Do I return one of them? (I hadn't realized that the 7G is so much thinner than the 6G.)
  9. Thanks, everyone. Your advice will be heeded one of these days.
  10. PM sent re: Live Trane.

  19. Does anyone know how to get this CD? http://www.gligg-records.com/records/page45/page51/back_in_a_minute.html Gligg doesn't answer e-mails, and the Amazon doesn't have it. And the musicians involved do not have websites. Any lead would be appreciated.
  20. I've never been a big fan of the blues music, and know nothing about it really. But yesterday, as I was driving, I was listening to Fresh Air on NPR, and Terry Gross was interviewing Phil and Dave Alvin who are blues singer-guitarists. Each played and sang a song with just his acoustic guitar and I found it fascinating. I thought the guitar playing sounded almost avant grade -- almost like Derek Bailey. I was wondering if people could recommend some good blues played on acoustic guitar, with or without vocals, and with or without any other instrumental backings. Thanks.
  21. I recently bought the following 3 CDs from the bassist Max Johnson: Max Johnson Quartet (Not Two) [quartet w/ S. Swell, M. Whitecage, T. Sorey] Max Johnson, "The Prisoner" (NoBusiness) [quartet w/ I. Laubrock, M. Maneri, T. Fujiwara] Ross Martin, Max Johnson, & Jeff Davis, "Big Eyed Rabbit" (Not Two) [trio] For some reason, unlike his other recordings, these just don't work for me. The total, including shipping, was $45. They can be yours for $36 including shipping. Any takers? Each was played 1-3 times, and is absolutely pristine. I also have a much more extensive trade/sell list that I can send you if you are interested.
  22. Thanks, everyone. I should have realized this before, but this is a bit dangerous -- getting interested in another genre of music!
  23. Tony Malaby

I was wondering what people think of Malaby's recordings. His "Adobe" on Sunnyside is the first of his recordings I ever got, and it is one of my favorite recordings of last dozen years or so. But I've tried half a dozen of his other recordings ("Paloma Recio", "Warblepeck", "Tamarindo", etc.) and I've been disappointed with all of them. Unlike "Adobe", these other recordings seem to me just aimless and aggressive in gratuitous ways. The fact that Paul Motian is on "Adobe" may make a difference, but I also really like Mark Helias's Open Loose recordings that Malaby plays on along with Tom Rainey. So, it can't be just Paul Motian who is making a difference.

  25. Reissues from Sony Japan

Is that Gerry Mulligan CD hard to find; I recall this one quite a bit in the used bin at Amoeba in Los Angeles. The Nick Travis was on RCA (reissued by Fresh Sound; don't know if it's still in print); would it be in this series? The old 1980's Mulligan from Columbia is quite easy to find. But the sound leaves much to be desired. Very flat and metallic. I would love a new remaster. I've never seen the Fresh Sound Travis, but I doubt that it is legit. I don't see why it can't be in this series as it is RCA, there have been plenty of RCA recordings in this series.
