  1. It has the date of 1994 on the back -- according to a picture I found on the 'net. Amazon.fr seems to have a copy for 80 euros! I think other listings are of other versions.
  2. I know that this is a very long shot. But does anyone have a copy of the 4-CD issue with the above cover available for sale or trade? I think there have been a couple of newer reissues, but I am looking for this older issue. Thanks.
  3. Does anyone know? I used to love picking up one or two of his releases a year -- from Blue Note and Venus. I wonder why he has stopped recording. And now that I am on the W. Coast, I no longer get to see him perform.
  4. Ornette Coleman, "Sound Grammar" -- Greg Cohen & Tony Falanga.
  5. I wish that these Fontana recordings were re-issued by Universal Japan. So many recordings get re-issued every year, it seems. Why not these?
  6. Todd Neufeld, the guitarist on these records, has on his website soundclips of him playing in various trios -- including one with Masabumi Kikuchi and Thomas Morgan. They sound great. Hope Neufeld releases some of this music on CD soon. http://www.toddneufeld.net P.S. I just realized that I am now a "Supa Groover". Yikes! I guess I spend a lot of time here. I should procrastinate less!!
  7. do you own a PHONE? I'll meet you halfway. Meet my new desktop image! Thank you! I own a very basic cell phone but don't have a cord to conect it to the iMac, nor know what to do with it if I did. I'm not into pictures. I misspoke, I actually have a camera, but I no longer have the software to use it with my iMac, and the laptop I had used it with has died. So I really don't have a working camera for sharing pics. Which is okay with me. I'm just like you, Lon. I am thinking of getting a camera though as I will be traveling to Europe this May. By the way, this set doesn't do much for me. I have the US version with everything in mint condition. If anyone wants it for $30, I can ship early next week. I think I will be abused for wanting to part with this.
  8. It turns out that it is as you guys described it. Just a cardboard sleeve. Not a digipack, and no insert. I think it went out print very fast. There are a couple of other discs where this band plays -- one by Samuel Blaser and another by Alexandra Grimal -- that I like very much, and that is why I wanted to acquire "Koan". I am not sure yet whether I like "Koan"; will have to listen for a while.
  9. My understanding is that this CD originally came out in a digipack with insert(s). Then it went out of print very quickly, but 482 had some extra CDs that they have been selling in plain envelopes.
  10. Just found a copy at Jazz Record Mart. Thanks!
  11. I'm looking for a copy with all the inserts intact. Does anyone have a copy that he is willing to sell or trade away? Thanks.
  12. http://player.ecmrecords.com/tomasz_stanko_new_york_quartet-wislawa It's a double CD release too. I found his other ECM titles a little too well-mannered and monochromatic -- almost claustrophobic. This one looks a lot better and certainly has more interesting players on it. Can't wait!
  13. I'm very jealous. I didn't get the ICP box either. I have about a dozen ICP recordings and that is enough for me, I think. When you get a chance, tell us a little about the quality of the music on these 5 LP's.
  14. Too bad about the price. I wish Mosaic had done this set.
  15. I'm glad that someone else had this reaction. I listened to it on NPR and was bored. The track with the wind ensemble was downright annoying. I cancelled my order on Amazon. I was astonished to see the article in NYT today. But I often find the NYT jazz folks unreliable.

  20. I don't know if these are my favorites from the year, as I have not really taken a thorough look at what was issued when. But these are some of the new CDs I've enjoyed the most this past year: Chick Corea, "Further Explorations" (Concord) Kirk Knuffke & Jesse Stacken, "Like a Tree" (SteepleChase) Kirk Knuffke & Ted Brown, "Pound Cake" (SteepleChase) Bill McHenry, "Peur du Vide" (Sunnyside) Talking Cows, "Almost Human" (Morvin) I must say, I really miss getting new recordings from Paul Motian. The Corea recording would not have been the same w/o Motian, and the McHenry recording would have been even better with Motian. I hope there are fair number of unissued sessions that were done with him and that will be issued over the coming years. And I kick myself for not ever being in NYC at the right time to hear him live.
  21. Thanks. I'm hoping to get a copy of the Sony SRCS Mastersound remaster, which I usually like very much.
  22. If you have and are willing to part with this CD, I'm very interested. Thanks.
  23. There is a nice, heartfelt tribute to Dave Brubeck by the political commentator E.J. Dionne in Washington Post today. But there is also this comment by one of the readers. "Pretty much you can blame Brubeck and Charlie Parker for the demise of Jazz. Their tendency to blow notes that have no resemblance or contribution to the theme of the tune made Jazz irrelevent to music. You had to be "enlightened" to pretend you were enjoying the crap they were putting out." Amazing!
