  1. Somewhat - but that album is very heavy on In a Silent Way/Bitches Brew material. In the summer/fall of 1969, the band was still playing a lot of material from earlier in the '60s (Footprints, Masquelero) and even some tunes from the '50s (Round Midnight, Milestones, No Blues). Even those tunes get pretty abstract, though. Hmmm. That sounds very intriguing. I will check it out. Thanks.
  2. So, would the music on this set sound like the one in "Live at Fillmore East: It's About That Time" from March 1970?

  5. Yes, Live at Birdland. Thanks. Anyone with an opinion as to how good this recording is?
  6. Glad to hear that this is coming out. But I myself could have done without the Imani Winds and more of the quartet. When I attended a concert with IW, I found the performance rather ungainly and boring. The pieces didn't breathe like the pieces with just the quartet. And I wish there was a recording of the dates with Jason Moran. Would be interested in hearing the differences.
  7. So, is the stand-alone single CD selling for $18.99 the newer session with Greg Osby? Not very clear information on the website.
  8. I bought this 2-LP set after reading this review and watching some videos on YouTube: http://freejazz-stef.blogspot.com/2012/05/thing-with-barry-guy-metal-nobusiness.html The Thing are Mats Gustafsson, Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten, and Paal Nilssen-Love, and is here joined by Barry Guy. Alas, it is not for me. I guess I like my free jazz a little less exuberant. I listened to the 2 LP's only once -- I actually listened to only the first 3 sides. So the set is practically new. The price of the set is $35.00 plus shipping at most sellers. It is yours for $24.00 including shipping within continental USA. Any takers? SOLD!!
  9. Thanks folks. I do have a record brush and use a couple of different stylus-cleaning solutions that I use between spins.
  10. I've had a turntable only for a couple of years, and am not an audio equipment-phile by any means. I have a question some may be able to answer. When I play some of my records, the hi hat cymbal sounds less than crisp. It sounds like scattered electric noise, rather than the cymbals being struck crisply. I don't know how else to put it. Is there something I can do to improve the sound? This seems to happen especially often when I play the 200g audiophile Blue Note LP's from Classic Records. Perhaps this has to do with the quality of pressing more than my turntable (Rega P1), but perhaps I can do something to my turntable to improve the sound? Any help would be much appreciated.

  13. Very sad to hear that PT is ending its run. Three cheers for Dan Warburton and the fellow writers. They introduced me to some fabulous music that I would not have otherwise gotten into.
  14. I did go to Jazz Messengers 6 years ago when I was here. I didn't think at the time that they had anything that I couldn't get from sellers in the US. In any case, they will be closed for the next 2 days. I will try to check out Jamboree. Thanks.
  15. Anyone have recommendations? I'm here for a couple of days.
  16. No, not at all. It's just that Brownie was the first to really speak up for the album.
  17. Hmmm... Now, I think that I should really look for it. The fact that it is essentially a string quartet intrigues me. Thanks, everyone.
  18. I've read something similar in a James Joyce biography once. Some Parisian hostess invited Joyce and Proust to dinner. Both came, to everyone's surprise in Proust's case. The hostess sat them down next to each other thinking that a great conversation would ensue, and everyone else would just bask in the resulting delight. But the only exchange occurred when Joyce turned to Proust mid-dinner, and asked "Do you like bon bons?" and Proust replied "No." God knows whether it is true, but it should be true.
  19. Thanks folks -- for many pointers. Maybe I should look into those more recent recordings. And thanks, Lon, for the Fresh Sound recommendation. But that one seems to have only the piano trio session, and not the strings session. (Hope you are doing well in Austin, which I miss very much!) I guess I will pick this up if an opportunity presents itself. I did see a copy in an Austin used record store once, but I passed on it because it was pretty scratched up.
  20. I've been listening to a lot of George Wallington lately. It seems most of his 1950's sessions are available on CD except for this Verve recording, which is partly a piano trio session and partly a strings session. Am wondering whether I should try to find a vinyl copy, which doesn't appear very common and maybe hard to track down. For those of you who have/know it, how is it? Thanks in advance.
  21. I am particularly fond of the 20-bit K2 remasters that JVC put out in the late 1990's. If you have any of the following for sale or trade, please send me a message. I am looking for copies in jewel cases, with both CDs and inserts in excellent condition. I know it's a long shot, but thought I should give it a shot here. Thanks in advance. John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman (MVCJ 19046 or MVCZ 10082) John Coltrane, “Transition” (MVCJ 19129) Gil Evans, “Out of the Cool” (MVCJ 19055) Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins (MVCJ 19058) Red Garland, “Manteca” (VICJ 2162 or VICJ 41262) Red Garland, “Rojo” (VICJ 2178 or VICJ 41315) Red Garland, “The Nearness of You” (VICJ 60020 or VICJ 41168) Coleman Hawkins, “Desafinado” (MVCJ 19097) Roy Haynes, “Out of the Afternoon” (MVCJ 19045) Milt Jackson, “Jazz ’n’ Samba” (MVCJ 19101) Elvin Jones & Richard Davis, “Heavy Sounds” (MVCJ 19038) Quincy Jones, "This is How I Feel About Jazz" (MVCR 20047) Mike Mainieri, “Blues on the Other Side” (MVCJ 19187) Shelly Manne, “234” (MVCJ 19041) Sonny Rollins, “On Impulse!” (MVCJ 19035) Sonny Rollins, “East Broadway Rundown” (MVCJ 19152) Howard Rumsey, “Sunday Jazz a la Lighthouse” (VICJ 2020) Archie Shepp, “Four for Trane” (MVCJ 19048) Sonny Stitt (MVCR 20060) McCoy Tyner, “The Night of Ballads & Blues” (MVCJ 19086) McCoy Tyner, “Plays Duke Ellington” (MVCJ 19087) Kai Winding & J.J. 22. I thought the problem was that at that point, it is damaging the vinyl. This is what I am worried about.
  23. I have a turntable I bought about 1 and 1/2 years ago. It is Rega P-1. I am wondering when I am supposed to change the cartridge? Are there any rules of thumb?
  24. Anyone know whether these are regular plastic jewel case versions or mini-LP's?
  25. Thanks, everyone. I take it that 2-4 weeks is for SAL, and not for Air Mail? The website says that SAL may take up to 12 weeks. I hope that is not usually the case.
