Well, first of all, only turntables with an AC motor will be a problem. If you have a DC motor, it's not an issue (and even some fancy AC motor-driven ones don't use the mains' frequency but correct it).

Second of all, some electronics (all laptops, many other portable devices, some other devices) actually take either voltages and frequencies. Look on the back where the power cable comes in, and see whether it says something like "Input: 110V-120V, 1A, 50Hz" or something like "Input: 110V-240V, 1A, 50Hz-60Hz". If it's the latter, you don't even need a transformer.

Third, yes, you can just purchase a transformer and a CD player will work fine. It doesn't depend on the frequency of the AC.

    lipi,

Thanks for a very helpful post.  Let me ask:  How do you figure out whether your turntable uses an AC or DC motor?  I've looked at the turntable and also the manual, and can't find any indication.  I have a Rega P1.  Ironically, it was made in the UK, but its input designation is 115V ~ 60Hz only.

  3. In a couple of months, I will be moving from the US to the UK.  I am wondering whether any of my stereo equipments can be made to work there.  Does anyone have experience in this department?  Some research online indicates that I should not be moving my turntable because of frequency difference (50 in the UK, 60 in the US).  I understand that voltage transformers can be bought.  Do US CD players work with such transformers?  Thanks in advance for any help.

  4. I will be moving from San Francisco to London in 6 months or so, and I am wondering whether I should get rid of my vinyl collection.  I have 200 or so plus the 3 volumes of Commodore Mosaics.  It is the last items that I am most reluctant to part with.  But given that I am going to one of the few places more expensive (housing wise and others) than SF, the expenses of moving, and the cumbersome nature of vinyl, I am very tempted to just call this vinyl merchant I know in Sacramento and ask him to buy my collection.

  5. I am looking for the following 5 CD's issued in Japan in the 1990's with 20-bit K2 remastering that I like.  If you have any (in jewel cases) that you are willing to trade or sell, please PM me.  You'd be making a collector very happy by helping him finish his collection!  Thanks.

  6. sorry  Larry, I just do not like Getz and  have never been able to listen to him; his was one of the first LPs I ever owned; I am convinced now, though I had no idea at the time (hey I was only 14) that he was a sociopathic narcissist (got my degree from Phoenix U); and I truly think his playing reflects that very directly.

I personally love Stan Getz, esp. his early 1950's recordings.  But I can understand how someone might feel the way Allen does about a musician.  I feel the same way about Keith Jarrett.  I think Jarrett's playing reflects his self-indulgent, unctuous, aggravating narcissism.  And all that phony moaning!  If I am not mistaken, Jarrett does not moan on his classical recordings, probably because he realizes that he could not get away with that stuff with classical listeners.  Actually, classical listeners do tolerate some moaning, if it is genuine -- e.g. Radu Lupu.  Just not phony moaning from the likes of Jarrett.  Sorry for getting my pet peeve out in the open!

  15. Good luck, Lon.

I am curious as to how the second disc is -- music- and sound-wise.  I already have most of what is on Disc 1, and don't think I want Discs. 3-4.

It's sounds wonderful Bol.  If you avoid the 3rd and 4th discs, you'll be missing out, the Dietikon gig is wonderful!

Thank you.  Will keep this in mind.

  16. This is a marvelous set. The SQ also. I am enjoying it a lot, all the more since it is one of the last purchases I managed to do before the banks collapse in Greece, the capital controls and especially the limitation of use of all credit/debit cards only within Greece... Let's see.

    Wow.  My best wishes.

Just got my set too.  I know this release is not ideal given that no proceeds are going to SR himself.  But if the first CD is any indication, this is a glorious set.  For me, it has a chance of getting up there with "Plugged Nickel" and Shelley Manne's "Black Hawk" recordings.

I too would like to hear whether there are any European dates that have good sound quality like this release.

  17. I have the following CDs for sale or trade. Shipping within continental US is $3 for 1st CD and $1 for each additional CD. All of my CDs (including inserts) are in excellent condition unless otherwise noted.
