  2. I would like to find out people's opinions about this set. I'm just beginning to enjoy pre-bebop jazz, and I thought I might like this. I've been listening to some old Blue Note recordings by the likes of Edmund Hall, Art Hodes, and (old pre-4000 series) Ike Quebec, and I've been enjoying them (to my surprise). Based upon the track samples on the Mosaic website I get the impression that Jacquet and Quebec are quite similar in their styles and temperament. Am I way off on this? Any feedback would be appreciated.

  4. I too would like to see more early BN 5000 series stuff and more Pacific Jazz stuff. Those CDs from Conn 10" series and the West Coast Classics series are some of my most cherished CDs. I also have some hot jazz CDs released in Toshiba's Blue Note Classics series, and they are very very nice. I for one think that the recent releases have been a bit one-sided -- too much of 1960s stuff and not enough else.

  5. Jim,

What are the Higgins Venus CDs like? I've never heard him. Is he like Charlap in that he is restrained and elegant, or is he like some pianists who thunder on the piano? I've just got a Steve Kuhn CD from Venus which is more like the latter, and am not crazy about it. Would appreciate any insights.

    Thanks.

  6. I am looking for the following TOCJs. It'd be great if anyone is interested in a sale, or trade, or just know where any of these can be obtained. I think the chances are small, but I thought I should give it a try.

    Grant Green, "Idle Moments"

    Joe Henderson, "Page One"

    Jackie McLean, "Let Freedom Ring"

    Wayne Shorter, "Speak No Evil"

    Cecil Taylor, "Unit Structures"

  7. I just got Charlap's Venus CDs from Cadence. What great CDs, and what great service! I recommend the CDs very much -- especially "'S Wonderful" and "Blues in the Night". And Cadence is the place to get them. Given that these CDs cost 2,800 yen in Japan, Cadence is charging less than what the exchange rate demands.

  8. I think Bill Charlap has 2 or 3 trio albums under the name "New York Trio" on the Japanese Venus label with a bassist and a drummer other than the Washingtons. Is anyone familiar with these? What are they like?

I once wrote to Blue Note suggesting that they release these in the US (the way that Sony is releasing some Japanese label recordings), and they responded by saying that it would be difficult for them to promote both Charlap's BN recordings and these Venus recordings.

  9. I have the following CDs for sale. All of my CDs (including inserts) are in

excellent condition. Please contact me at: ktoh@umich.edu if you are interested in any. I would like to receive payments in PayPal (from bank accounts; not credit cards). Shipping within US is $2 for any number of CDs.

I would also be interested in trades. Please send me your list.

    $13

Bill Charlap, “All Through the Night” (Criss Cross)

Al Haig, “Jazz Will-o-the-Wisp” (Esoteric/Venus Japan)

Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims (Conn)

Warren Vache & Bill Charlap, “2Gether” (Nagel Heyer)

    $9

    Freddie Hubbard, “Goin’ Up” (Conn)

    Bobby Hutcherson, “The Stick-Up” (Conn)

Various Artists, “Be-Bop on Dial” (TOCJ 6212)

    $18

Stanley Turrentine & 3 Sounds, “Blue Hour” (Conn - 2 CDs)

    $7

    Cannonball Adderley, “Somethin’ Else” (RVG)

    Dexter Gordon, “Go” (RVG)

Horace Silver, “Song for My Father” (RVG)

Phil Woods, “Rights of Swing” (Candid)

  10. Thanks to all. Those comments are very helpful. I'll try the recording when I get a chance. In response to b3-er's "What gives?", I can't offer any argument as to why I think organs and e-pianos are bad in jazz recordings. It's been my experience that I just don't like them when I hear them in jazz recordings. But maybe I'll change my mind one of these days. I used to feel the same way about e-guitars. But Kenny Dorham's "'Round Midnight at Cafe Bohemia" changed that. Now, I really like some of Burrell, Johnny Smith, Farlow, G. Green, Jim Hall, etc.

  11. I have a question some of you may consider silly. But I'm wondering how bad/distracting John Lewis's vocal sounds are on these recordings. I've heard from a couple of sources that this is a worry. I personally find Bud Powell's grunting tolerable and at times even enhancing. But I find Mingus's and Keith Jarrett's vocal sounds so distracting/pretentious/unnecessary that I find myself avoiding their recordings -- despite thinking that each of their music has much merit.

I thought I should get some more reactions before trying to get these John Lewis CDs. Your help is appreciated.
