  1. Just had a listen to the powerman 5000 track sounds like they are coming from a similar vibe as Dave Graney!! (amazing songwriter & totally cool dude) One listen & Dave came immediatly to mind http://www.thedavegraneyshow.com http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Graney He's one of Australia's lesser known gems - been around (with his partner Claire Moore) since the late 70's - contemporaries of the Bad Seeds, Go-Betweens etc Various Bands he has led: Moodists, White Buffaloes, Coral Snakes, Dave Graney Show, Lurid Yellow Mist, The Mistly He's mixes a combination of folk/rock/jazz/lounge-core - Claire plays drums/vibes/xyl I usually get to see him once a year during one of his Australian tours - he's been on the road for over 35 years now You should be able to find a lot of his clips on YouTube - one of my favourite titles is "I've Got Dimensions" - below is a YouTube link of a live version in 2005 ps. That Serge Gainsbourg clip with the dancer is an absolute scream had a listen to this song that's a pretty weird dude, for sure. loved the song, though. it does kind of have the same vibe, i agree. thanks for the rec!

That Serge Gainsbourg clip with the dancer is an absolute scream i got slammed with runs today at school, so i didn't get to do anyone the honor really of listening to their recs, which i promise i will get to tomorrow. i'm excited to check out the ones you put here, thanks a lot for taking the time. your description has me intrigued for sure!
  3. http://youtu.be/Lhane8M9OE8 powerman 5000 as a whole is generally a nu-metal/alternative outlet, but the referenced song is the only one from their discograph that i really care about. now that i think about it, it sounds to me like perhaps an updated version of the type of music cole porter might have done(re: anything goes) with a spacey lounge twist, wherein it has roots in jazz, but might be more contemporary or that era's pop. i could see him singing something like that; the lead singer of pm5k just had no intention of recording vocals that sounded of the time period for which they wrote the song. but i digress i'll check those leonard cohen albums out, i like him. if you have any recommendations of lounge from the 50s and 60s and also space age pop or space exotica or bachelor pad stuff, i'd be supremely grateful. it sounds like you have access to a wealth of knowledge of the subject.
  4. this is the closest thing i've found, and apparently it consisted almost solely as the inspiration for the powerman 5000 track. i can definitely tell, it hits that sweet spot for me. but if this and the pm5k track are the only offerings of this type of music, i think i'm headed for a one way trip to depressiontown
  5. i'll check that period of his catalogue out, for sure, thanks and get back to you nick cave is great, he's got some incredible bummer songs, but i think his stuff usually boils down more to goth/singer songwriter/country? hmm... maybe i'll start looking for hopefully lounge/doowop, might be closer to that pm5k song. the only problem is it's impossible to type lounge music into any search engine without 1000 cafe del mar electronic/chillout compilations showing up. good genre, don't mind listening to it to relax, but actual lounge music it is not.
  6. what type of music would you say the powerman 5000 track was?? maybe if i figure it out i can stop annoying you guys and bug a fan of whatever genre that is serge wasn't really my bag, but i had a laugh at the dude dancing in the backround of this video... i'm a huge tom waits fan Not sure if i'm off the mark, but what about this type of thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9Woc1NRwAg i've actually listened to that same music video multiple times before your rec and i loved it i've been really into space age pop as well so this gets me there cheers
  7. There we go, welcoming a newcomer to jazz and this site with a warm, friendly greeting. You do misunderstand, sir, those were serious suggestions. The background vocals of the example were very Brian Wilson-ish, the tempo/groove can be found on any # of Ray Conniff cuts, and my admiration of Singers Unlimited is very real and has been noted in these pages on more than one occasion. Their collaborations with Pat Williams & Boss Brass might well be in the OP's sweet spot, as may the other suggestions. if this song was about space, i would... it would just be.. dear god. it'd be perfect. and then maybe a few slower songs with it to kind of fit the song in the original post. as far as making me feel like i'm sipping a scotch while i stargaze dressed like this http://www.fiftiesweb.com/fashion/m-long.jpgin this house http://inhabitat.com/prefab-friday-marmol-radziners-utah-house/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/marmolutahhouse1.jpg you've achieved 90% of my request.
  8. i listened to this song: incredible. it's definitely going to my rotation. like clifford's recs, tho, it doesn't scratch this particular itch. wow. that was good, tho
  9. hey, thanks for the reply, man. i checked out every suggestion, and while i could totally see myself really digging pretty much every one(especially rob mazurek), this particular itch hasn't yet been scratched. if it's any help, i've been scouring any and all space exotica and space age pop releases from the 60's and when i'm lucky enough to find it, from the 50's. it's close but it's just not loungey enough i can see from your other post that you were being serious, but i gotta say i was with the other guy, thought you were messing with me because i deigned to ask for a rec based off of a powerman 5000 song i'm not really a fan of the beach boys and really i'm just looking for lounge-type music, the earlier the better, and a space theme would just be the icing on the cake for me. other than that just that sort of vibe from the song would be great.. i know it's pretty specific, especially because the jazz i DO listen to sounds nothing like it(i like chet baker a lot, and the more depressing the jazz the better, but i haven't found anything quite as low as him) There we go, welcoming a newcomer to jazz and this site with a warm, friendly greeting. I am not aware of other music like this, but I hope that others recommend some, and that you enjoy it and explore the music which moves you. If we can help you with any other questions about jazz, please come back and ask. There are many knowledgeable people here who can provide a lot of information on most musical questions. Welcome! i really appreciate the welcome. lord knows i need all the help i can get when it comes to jazz.
  10. i'm pretty new to jazz, so perhaps you guys can help me out.. if this is the wrong place for this thread, i'm not going to be offended if it gets deleted. basically i'm looking for stuff that sounds as close as possible to this surprising gem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrnl71YdyRA of all bands, powerman 5000 wrote it, and well. "watch the sky for me" it's pretty much perfect and exactly what i'm looking for in a retro sort of laid back spacey jazz-lounge type of song. they had to have copped that sound from somewhere. thanks for any sort of help, i don't really know where else to go.
