  1. Hey check this out, just an interesting note from the Associated Press Criminal court judge assassinated in Basra Basra, February 12, 2005 A prominent Iraqi judge was assassinated on Saturday by two gunmen on a motorcycle in the southern port city of Basra, police said. Taha al-Basri, a former chief judge at Basra's highest criminal court, was gunned down as he drove to work, said Lt Col Karim al-Zaidi, an information officer at Basra's police headquarters. The judge's bodyguard was seriously wounded in the attack and was taken to a hospital, al-Zaidi said. Insurgents in Iraq have frequently targeted Iraqi government officials.
  2. Been perusing this topic and I'm too tired to think about it heavily now but will drift off to sleep to the JRVG of 'Basra' a little bit later. In the meantime, I picked up Hi-Voltage and Heavy Soul. Other than a tape of the Mobley made by a gracious board member, I haven't heard these. So far so excellent.
  3. Ditto here. If I ever won the lottery, I'd go postal on the OJC catalog.
  4. Some all 'round good blowin' on this one.
  5. Nice version of Nica's Dream on this one.
  6. Just bought this a couple days ago. Some real 'purty music on it.
  7. Funny topic for right now, I'm heating up summa my dad's homemade chicken quesadillas with black beans and cilantro. I'm gonna savor every morsel. Cilantro is great chopped with some scallions, sprinkled over good chile and topped off with some grated monterey jack or cheddar. MMMMMMMmmmmmm
  8. Here is the first time I've heard about this It turns my stomach cuz I've been a relentless L&O viewer the past year and Briscoe is one of the main reasons I tune in to the original. Damn! I remember reading an article in the Star a couple weeks ago about his ailment but he was expected to pull through it. Oh well...RIP.... I'll still tune into the reruns on TNT. I'd like to see Benjamin Bratt come back and work with Jesse L. Martin rather than the dude they have on now, though apparently scuttlebutt has it that he may take Vincent D'Onofrio's place on CI cuz of some dirt between he and the producers. At least SVU is going strong, IMO. This season has been a dooozy! Peace and Happy Holidays!
  9. Freddie Hubbard Woody Shaw Sessions 2 cd set
  10. Time to start counting down............ B-) B-) I'll bag a bunch of these......but I'll hold on to my JRVG of Basra. Splendid disc.
  11. I probably won't be picking up the Conns right away cuz of money. I already own the Rivers Mosaic but 'Contours' is quite a gem to these ears so I may pick it up later on. I already have 'Dance w/ Death' from an LP burn but will definitely pick that up soon. I have a burn of 'Easterly Winds' also so that will have to wait a while. This may disturb some board members but after listening to my Young Mosaic, I can't get with 'OLAP' Eddie Gale's trpt playing on this is just awful to me. Totally rambling and all over the place; not even in an artistic manner. Ornette's trumpet playing is genius compared to this so I may just skip over this one. I would have much rather heard Lee again again or Woody. Several people I know have told me that the Silver set of albums is a 'Cult Classic' so I need to get it just to see what the buzz is about. I like daring things. I'll get anything with Bobby Hutcherson so 'Now' will be in my collection soon, along with a legit copy of "Dance with Death'
  12. "Hey fish...........fish, fish, fish, fish, fishieeessssssssssss..." I love this movie. I love Morgan Freeman and his final parole hearing speech. Great music too. B-) "And it's FAT-ass by a nose!!!" "Fresh fish!"
  13. Been listening to a lot of non-jazz lately. Rap: Jay-Z, Jurassic 5, The Roots, Notorius BIG Some trance in the way of DJ Tiesto...Magic 4,5; In Search of Sunrise; Forbidden Paradise 3 On the jazz angle, I'm reacquainting myself with Larry Young and have pulled out the Ornette box on more than one occasion recently.
  14. I think it all depends on what sort of exercise. I've been actively on a weight-training program for about 5 months and stretching is a must. ('The 14 Day Body Sculpting Bible for Men' just in case anybody's curious, GOOD BOOK!) For free weight exercises to be most effective, one must implement the most complete range of motion in order to stimulate the muscle groups through and through. This can only be done through about 6-7 minutes of warming up and stretching, that order of course. Like Dr. Rat mentioned, stretching cold muscles is dangerous; in fact the above mentioned body sculpting book compares stretching cold muscles to trying to stretch a rubber band that has been placed in the freezer for a bit of time. Big no-no. Since I own a bench and dumbbell set, I do everything in my apt. Before I do my upper body workout, I perform about 75-100 medium tempo jumping jacks, I jog in place for a minute or to and then do a little shadow boxing. After that I do arm circles and then move onto some other stretches with my back, forearms and shoulders. Chest too. I don't stretch again after but I probably should.
  15. I mentioned in another thread that a Tower Records near me has a few of these in their shelves. Anyone need 'Eternal Spirit', 'Flight to Jordan' or 'Poly-currents'? I wish Trompeta Toccata and a couple others would 'materialize' there some day.
  16. First won Ebay item was about 2 1/2 years ago w/ 'Ready for Freddie' $60 bucks. It sure was sweet getting this prized item in the mail but.....DOH!!
  17. "My hair! He shot my hair! Son of a bitch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
  18. Thanks for the recommendations, though I'm not sure it makes my decision any easier I might go for the Parlan set. I don't go to 'Happy Frame of Mind' very often but when I do....SHEEE-IT!! I enjoy the hell out of it. As for the Moncur select, I already have a chunk of the music so it's not a big priority right now. Maybe when I get some extra scratch. I'm thinkin' either Carmell Jones or Patton for the Selects. Parlan, Gerald Wilson or Byrd/Adams for the regular sets. Maybe Johnson too......Oh yeah and the Elvin Jones........DARN THIS ADDICTION!!!!!
  19. Alright. Have the Shaw, Rivers and Mitchell sets. I love all three. I need another but can't decide. I'm thinking about Elvin, Parlan, Byrd/Adams, or Gerald Wilson. Then again I don't have any of the Selects. The Selects I've been thirsting for are Pearson, Patton, and/or Carmell Jones. Any suggestions?? I need a set that will reward repeated listenings. Something swingin', perhaps a bit exploratory, bluesy. Once that Hill Select is released, I'm all over it but I want something to hold me over till then. Too many dang choices.
  20. Just found this topic. I gotta say that Walt Dickerson's album, To My Queen is one of the most beautiful pieces of work I've heard to this date. GET IT!!!
  21. Haven't listened to "..27th Man" since I picked it up a while ago. Might have to take it out for a spin. I sure hope "Doin' the Thing" is reissued sometime soon. That mutha is on FIRE!!
