  1. My favorite Brazilian "fusion" group, that's been going strong since the '70's, is "Azymuth". You can find many of their newer CD's at Dustygroove (their latest, "Aurora", on the Far Out label is great!). Their Milestone recordings from the past are great too! Edited to add that the bass player for Azymuth, Alex Malheiros has a daughter, Sabrina Malheiros who is is wonderful vocalist and has some great CD's too!
  2. Love the picture above of Monk Montgomery with one of the first Fender Precision Basses. Monk has been credited with the first recorded electric bass solo's while with the Hampton band!!

Thanks Hans for the Wikipedia discography. Didn't realize he was only 57 years old when he died (the same age that I am right now -- that's too young!).

I have "Something New" on both LP and CD. I'm not sure how easy it will be to find the CD -- it's on the Interplay label out of Japan but it has been several years years since it's release (same as "The Bassist" CD on the same label). However, both are highly recommended and worth the search! I second all the Eastern Rebellion LP/CD's (never heard Sam Jones in person -- wish I would have had that opportunity) and I also second Duke Jordan's "Lover Man" (I was just listening to Jordan's "Lover Man" CD 2 days ago --should have thought of that one myself!)

"The Bassist" a trio session on Interplay records and "Visitation" on Steeplechase records are two of my favorites under his name. What a great sound and feel he gets!! Also, Sam Jones can be found on many Xanadu records such as Jimmy Raney's "Complete Live in Tokyo" and others. IMHO, if you see Sam's name on a recording, it's gonna be swingin'!!!
  6. Saw Ira Sullivan at a concert here in Tampa about a month ago. He was in great form and it was a fantastic concert. Glad he's down here in Florida and I get to see him play rather frequently.
  7. Wow! Nice haul!! I really wish I had an Amoeba near me. When I went to the Amoeba in LA on vacation last year, I almost passed out seeing so many bins full of jazz CD's -- so much music and I had so little time to explore -- I did, however, bring back a nice little haul myself!!
  8. Thanks guys! I was kind of leaning towards the Herman but your rec's helped(I do have quite a bit of Parker already). So the Herman it is!!
  9. The only one's I don't have are the Woody Herman and Charlie Parker. I know I NEED one of these but which one???????
  10. I sent Filmzone1 an email today too. Supposedly the Peterson Box was sent to me in Florida on Jan. 26th. It's been 19 days and counting...
  11. RIP I need to pull out the Mosaic box.
  12. I ordered mine on January 24th and live in Florida and have yet to recieve mine. Last time I looked, I thought Florida was closer to the UK than San Francisco but maybe not...
  13. Haven't received my Peterson box yet either and ordered it around the same time as you guys.
  14. I read this book quite a while back and found it quite good. I have to say I am a huge fan of Ron's so I came to the book somewhat already biased. He's been a major influence on me as a bass player. I also grew up in the Detroit area so the discussion about his early life playing in and around the Detroit area and the whole music scene was very interesting to me. It's also great to hear him talk about many of the major jazz players he played with and the sessions he was on. I remember when it first came out there was some sort of controversy about some of the things he may of said in the book (maybe about not getting enough recognition and also about his being shut out of the classical field as a young cellist because of race)but for the life of me I cannot remember what all that was about. Overall, a great book that I would highly recommend.
  15. They may track but I don't think they care --they want your $$. I have used a coupon and walked right back in to the same store and used a second a few minutes later. I think my max was using 4-5 coupons in one day (going to several Borders)-- of course, that was back in the day when they had a better inventory.
  16. My first thoughts...I had to pick two...Andrew Hill Mosaic (Big Box) and Pat Moran Trio w/Scott LaFaro (original LP).
  17. Can't wait to pick this set up -- all I need is a 40% coupon from Borders and I'm off to get it!! For me, any newly released Hendrix is a day to celibrate!!
  18. Wow!! Disc arrived with super fast shipping!!!! Thanks!!!!! Great disc too!!
  19. Yeah, "Three Waves" is another good one!!! His recent "Mostly Coltrane" CD on ECM is really good too IMHO!!
  20. This is from a great CD if you can find it. The CD also includes 2 versions of Miles "So What" and some other nice tunes.
  21. PM sent on the CTI CD Art Farmer and Jim Hall, "Big Blues" $17now $14.
  22. Agree with JSngry, it's the tone. The sound he gets out of each note is pure pleasure. I once went to a master class with Haden. He told us to play each note as if it was the last note we would ever play and you can hear that in his playing. I wish I had 1/10th of his tone!!!!
