  1. IMHO, it's a great book written by his sister which helps to kind of take away the "myth" of Scott LaFaro and look at how he became, through a lot of hard work, one of the best bass players. It also discusses his early formative years and how he he worked to change the "role" of the bass to have much more interplay in the rythm section (I have to admit that I am a huge fan of Scott LaFaro so I am a little biased). I also came away with a good sense of what it was like hustlin' gigs on both the west and east coasts during the late '50's and early '60's since LaFaro was playing with a variety of east and west coast groups. Lot's of good interviews with contemporaries of LaFaro and some great, never before seen (at least by me), photo's too. Of course, at the end of the book you come away with the great loss to the jazz community with the tragic ending. The one thing I was amazed by was the, seemingly, ease at which LaFaro and many players in the late '50's and early sixties went from the east coast to west coast to play. It must have been much more difficult to get from one coast to the other during those early years but LaFaro seems to do it often. I went from the east coast to the west a couple of months ago for a two week trip and found myself never really adjusting to the time change and these musicians seemed to do it all the time!! I would certainly recommend this book to anyone interested in Scott LaFaro and the music scene of the "50's and early '60's.
  2. Sounds like I'm going to want to pick it up. Thanks Big Al!!!!! :tup
  3. I've never heard Rollin's Moving Out. Anybody know what's that like?
  4. Not sure you'll be able to get them as a download but... Sam Rivers/Dave Holland
  5. Nicest and most gracious musician I ever met. Sad Day RIP
  6. His Acoustic Bass was going through an amplifier! Besides having two acoustic basses, I have an NS Design WAV 4 Electric Upright Bass (EUB - pictured in the middle above) -- the Bass of the Future -- sounds awesome!!
  7. I got really lucky on this one. I picked up this CD on eBay brand new for less than $15 about a year ago. I owned the vinyl from when it was first released.
  8. I've heard that there is a CD out there with the following on it from the Chet baker Quintet. Wish I could have seen these line-ups on the "Tonight Show" (I was only 3 years old in 1956): "Tonight" TV Show 1956 with Chet Baker tp; Phil Urso, ts; Francis Boland, p; Scott LaFaro,b; Lawrence Marable, dr Intro by Chet into Extra Mild (P. Urso) 4:37 CTA (J. Heath) 2:58 Imagination (Burke-Van Heusen) 3:23 "Tonight" TV Show September 5, 1955 with Chet Baker tp; Phil Urso, ts; Bobby Timmons, p; Jimmy Bond Peter Littman, dr Jumpin' on a Cliff (Al Haig) 2:36 I have about everything recorded with Scott LaFaro but I've never heard the tonight show program from 1956 above -- I keep lookin' for it!
  9. One of my favorite recordings of his is: Skate Board Park (1979) Xanadu 174 (with Chick Corea, Bob Magnusson, Larance Marable)
  10. Just ordered this over the past weekend. Looking forward to hearing it!!
  11. I recently picked up the 50th Anniversary Box set of this -- I couldn't resist at the around $50 that I paid for it. Even though I have several versions of this too, I quite enjoy the book, DVD and LP and other goodies. I have an old LP of this and this new "Blue" LP sounds really great to my ears -- especially Paul Chambers bass sound (of course, I've not heard the mono version mentioned in the post above which I'm sure sounds awesome!!). A nice package -- except for the way they have the CD's and DVD stuck in cardboard slits in the package -- I had to take the CD's and DVD out and put them in plastic cases. My DVD was scratched but, luckily, seems to play fine. However, if I hadn't been able to get a good deal on the Box, I think I would have been happy with the new 2 disc set.
  12. I had no idea that James Newton's "Romance and Revolution" CD was so rare. I found a used copy for $2.99 at a local used record shop about a month ago. At the same time, I picked up his "African Flower" CD along with Hank Mobleys "Far Away Lands" and Art Blakey's & James Moody's "New Sounds". I guess someone dumped a few of their Blue Note CD's. Maybe this post should be moved to the "Great Finds" thread
  13. I just picked up the Monk, Miles and Highlights Vol.1 CD's at Borders on sale for $9.99 this week. Interestingly, the Highlights CD included a download from Borders of a Cal Tjader performance of "Summertime" from the festival.
  14. Got Mine!! Thanks for the Heads Up on this!! Fantastic Video!!

    Red Norvo

One of the bands I play with patterns itself after the Red Norvo Trio - Vibes, Guitar and Bass. You can check us out at: www.myspace.com/alsecenjazztrio Of course, we also "borrowed" from Charles Mingus for the title of our demo CD!!!
  17. Picked up the DVD at Best Buy for $12.99 this week. I'm really enjoying it!! It seeems as if they could have used a little more rehearsal but I kind of like the loose feel to it.
  18. According to Fed Ex, I should have my Coltrane Box by Friday -- geez, it takes a long time to get from California to Florida!! I'm glad I called Concord when I did or I doubt I would have received the Coltrane Box --- although by the time I inqired about the Evans Box that I had ordered it was gone. Well, in order to console myself about not getting the Evans Box, I guess I may have to order the Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions Mosaic box under the 10% sale...maybe it will make me feel better!!!!
  19. While my Coltrane Box is winding its way to me... I just got a call from Jackson at Concord -- I will not be receiving the Evans Box I ordered because it is SOLD OUT!! (I ordered on July 25th). I guess one consolation is that I have most of the Evans Riverside material on single CD's (several in K2 format). Oh well...
  20. I purchased two Euro Tal Farlow sets at two different places. The noise on Disc 6 Track 1 is on both of them -- but for the cheap price (I paid around $50 for each of them) -- I can live with it.
  21. I too ordered the Coltrane box on 7/21 Then I ordered the the Evans box on 7/25 (I had procrastinated on that one)!! I received my two earlier orders of single CDs!! (I put all my orders on seperate credit cards to try and conceal my expenditures from my better half -- she would have killed me to see it on one BIG order!!!! ) Unfortunately, she saw the credit bills for the first two orders... I'm in BIG trouble... ...but I still want my Coltrane and Evans Boxes!!!
