  1. both parties obviously are suffering from emotional problems, but i had to laugh at this story. just picture the salute at the end. i know, i'm going to that fiery place where kenny g plays nightly. Passer-by pushes suicide jumper in south China BEIJING – Chen Fuchao, a man heavily in debt, had been contemplating suicide on a bridge in southern China for hours when a passer-by came up, shook his hand — and pushed him off the ledge. Chen fell 26 feet (8 meters) onto a partially inflated emergency air cushion laid out by authorities and survived, suffering spine and elbow injuries, the official Xinhua News Agency said Saturday. The passer-by, 66-year-old Lai Jiansheng, had been fed up with what he called Chen's "selfish activity," Xinhua said. Traffic around the Haizhu bridge in the city of Guangzhou had been backed up for five hours and police had cordoned off the area. "I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest," Lai was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals." Xinhua said Lai was "taken away by police" but did not elaborate. A police officer who answered the telephone Saturday at a station close to the bridge confirmed the incident and said it was under investigation. He refused to give any other details and hung up. According to Xinhua, Chen wanted to kill himself because he had accrued 2 million yuan ($290,000) in debt from a failed construction project. On Thursday, he made his way to the Haizhu bridge, where 11 other people have tried to take their lives since April. Lai volunteered to talk Chen down but was turned away by police, Xinhua said. Lai then broke through the cordon, climbed to where Chen sat, greeted him with a handshake, then pushed. Photos in the Beijing Morning Post showed Lai, shoeless and in a T-shirt, saluting after Chen fell. The paper said Lai was released on bail Friday but did not give any details. It said he had been on medication for "a mental illness" for decades and had been on his way to a hospital for his pills. Chen was recovering in the hospital, Xinhua said.
  2. why would he be interested in jazz week, which was held april 25 - may 3?
  3. which leaves what, maybe 20 other reissues of this recording?
  4. Personally, I'd recommend catching Tre Corda at The Lily Pad in Cambridge. Here are some clips from a recent recording: Cd Baby. Otherwise, there's the Aaron Goldberg Trio at the Regattabar in Cambridge and Hiromi at Scullers in Boston.
  5. i've been looking forward to attending this year's vision fest for months now. incredible lineup, especially since i've never seen charles gayle, marshall allen, sunny murray, odean pope, and several others on the schedule. who else is going? enough for a mini-o hang in the big apple?
  6. premature paypalation? how embarrassing.
  7. I wish I had good news, but the Blanchard show appears to be the best (only?) offering while you're in town. The Regattabar used to be quite good, but since the blue note nightclub folks took over their bookings a few years ago, it has gone downhill considerably. Regardless, it looks like they will be closed for a couple of weeks at the end of June. There are other, less traditional, venues that I tend to gravitate towards these days. These include small art galleries like The Lily Pad and The Outpost, both located in Cambridge. Neither space appears to be offering anything interesting while you're in town. I'll keep my eyes open. I get a weekly listing of shows from Charlie Kohlhase, and that often includes additional venues like local libraries, galleries, and even the YMCA!
  8. beautiful cats! and neat pet furniture too. looks like one of yer yungins might like to hang out with the bad boyz below:
  9. gee, and here i was thinking that it's a godsend!
  10. really? in 2006 at age 71, sophia still looks attractive to me. did i mention that she was featured in the 2007 pirelli calendar?
  11. more info for interested parties: All Night Long Unavailable since 1961, beautifully repackaged (with Benny Green's original liner notes) and now remastered in digital stereo, this is one of the greatest British jazz movies. In a converted warehouse in London's Dockland's jazz enthusiast Rodney Hamilton stages an all-night anniversary party for successful black jazz pianist Aurelius Rex and Delia, his devoted white wife who gave up her singing career for matrimony. Johnny Cousin, Rex's jealous drummer (played by Patrick McGoohan), schemes to break up their marriage by attempting to persuade Delia to sing in a band he would like to start, but she refuses. Spreading rumors about Delia's infidelity, Johnny edits a tape recording of Delia and Cass Michaels, Rex's saxophonist and business manager, to make it appear that they are having an affair... "The action takes place against a backdrop of almost continuous jazz sessions, which seems to involve almost the entire upper echelon of the contemporary jazz scene: Dave Brubeck, Johnny Scott, Johnny Dankworth, Tubby Hayes, Stan Roderick to name but a few. The fantastic music played by this wealth of talent was written mostly by Philip Green (he appears on the credits of all but three of the tracks), Dave Brubeck and Johnny Dankworth with other credits to Sonny Miller, Kenny Napper and Tubby Hayes. 'Overture' is a wonderful roaring trumpets introduction rooted firmly in the 1960s, but has a timeless energy. For 'Noodlin'' and 'Saphire' the mood is more intimate with Tubby Hayes stroking the vibes in the first track and Johnny Scott oozing the alto-sax in a smooth romantic fashion in the second. John Dankworth's composition, 'Fall Guy', gives the saxes and the trumpets an opportunity to compete in successive frenzied solos while in 'The Chase' massed saxes and trumpets combine to create musical mayhem... the music is brilliant, natural and fresh... For any fan of 1960s jazz this is a must-have CD." there should be a law that any review describing a CD as a "must have," must have a link showing you where you can have it!
  12. This interesting recording was reissued in 2003 on Harkit Records CD (HRKCD 8095). It features Dave Brubeck, John Dankworth, Tubby Hayes, Charles Mingus, Ronnie Ross, John Scott, Kenny Wheeler, and many others. It's OOP, and I'm still looking for an available copy. This site lists the personnel on each cut on the soundtrack, with sound clips for 6 of the 16 tracks: microgrooves Oh, and welcome to the board cous'. your question was indeed appropriate. next step is to teach you the secret handshake. bring rubber gloves!
  13. thanks for introducing me to this band. it's nice to know that after 30 years of digging improvised music, there's still a lot of stuff i haven't heard. are people familiar with charlie kohlhase? he's a multi-reed player with an awesome sound on the bari. he records and performs in a variety of contexts, presumably to keep things fresh and interesting. all of his quintet dates are worth owning, and you can get some of them used for ridiculously low prices at amazon. charlie has also recorded some great stuff with john tchicai and with rosewell rudd that is worth investigating. all in all, charlie is an important figure in the boston scene today, and he's been a friend and mentor to me, recommending unfamiliar recordings and helping me develop a better understanding and appreciation for free jazz. i hope other members will take an interest in this thread. it takes so little time to offer a name for consideration, and the results help keep expanding the circle of listening. who needs another remastered title when there's so much good music you haven't heard yet?
  14. never bothered to look at this feature, but i like the idea that political posts don't count. it is, after all, a music board. i wonder what people's numbers would be if the only posts to be counted were those which had some "redeeming social value." in that case, could you have a negative post count?

  16. very cute. when it comes to alternative music, however, nothing beats a pair of moshing cats!
  17. i will always cherish the supporting characters he played in mel brooks' movies, as well as his co-starring role in the end, with burt reynolds (never cared much for cannonball). rip king of brooklyn, and thanks for all the laughter. They've hit Buddy! Come on girls! sound clip
  18. searching for additional info about horace's health, i checked out his official website and it's bulletin board for the latest news. i was disgusted by what i found - an unmoderated board completed dominated by porn spam. i left there with mixed feelings of anger and sadness over what amounts to a lack of respect for the man and his legacy.
  19. After learning that there will be no JVC Jazz Festival in New York this year, I searched for information about the festival in Newport, which had been run by the same company for the last several years. Thankfully, founder George Wein was able to put things together in order to save Newport. Here's some information on the lineup. 20. Curtain falls on JVC Jazz Festival New York By CHARLES J. GANS – 14 hours ago NEW YORK (AP) — The curtain has fallen on the JVC Jazz Festival New York, and the Big Apple will likely be without a flagship jazz festival until new sponsorship emerges. A spokesman for the Japanese electronics company said it would not be sponsoring any jazz events in 2009, ending what he called "a productive and successful relationship" dating back to 1984 when JVC first attached its name to the New York festival. "JVC is proud of its association with the Jazz Festivals, but the marketplace in which JVC competes today has changed dramatically, and so JVC has chosen to take our promotional activities in a different direction, and one that will no longer include jazz event sponsorship," Terry Shea, a spokesman for the Wayne, N.J.-based JVC U.S.A., said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press. Jazz impresario George Wein, who arranged the original JVC sponsorship deal, called JVC "the best sponsor anybody ever had." full story

    Wallace Roney

i've seen roney perform several times and own a handful of his recordings. i don't think the miles comparisons are overstated. imo, he sounds like miles and plays music that's remarkably similar to what miles played (most recently, the early-electric/waterbabies phase). hell, he even dresses like miles - oversized sunglasses, designer leather jackets, etc. there's nothing wrong with these decisions, mind you, but after a while you get the impression that you've heard it all before.
