  1. i just don't get him. Sorry, Yves was first. i say, i say, it was a joke son.
  2. i'm leaving for chicago friday morning to join in on the celebration. i have tickets for friday through sunday night at the velvet, for a total of 11 sets. hopefully i'll see one or two of you there. are you coming, chuck?
  3. correction: they don't say it isn't a crime, they say it's a crime that shouldn't be prosecuted. rather than argue that "it's too late now to stop illegal downloading," why don't they band together to change the laws. at the very least, why don't they refuse to sign contracts that don't contain provisions for free downloading? i wonder if these musicians would feel the same if they alone laid out the money to record, edit, master, produce, and distribute their music. imo, the argument that music business=bad, everyone else=good is getting a bit old and tired. of course the industry has to face facts and embrace new technologies, but how do you folks feel about the illegal download sites that post mosaic sets that were just released a few months prior?
  4. i wonder if my brother would be better off seeing some good latin music?
  5. by any chance, was that guy fenton hollander?
  6. as far as van dyke's goes, featured performers' descriptions that include "smooth jazz,""high-energy world fusion," and "soulful and sophisticated tone with music that is contemporary and fresh" don't sound very promising to me.
  7. howdy folks. my brother will be in miami two weeks from now and he asked me if i knew of any jazz clubs in the city. i'm not certain, but i think arturo sandoval's place is still closed for renovations. any suggestions would be appreciated.
  8. but this guy was a real doctor, wasn't he? well, wasn't he!?
  9. not on his kids show, of course, but on an evening show he had called "soupy's on," which also featured performances by miles, dizzy, and duke. here's brownie's performance: brownie on soupy
  10. why do you say dusty groove reissues some woody shaw?
  11. it strikes me as odd that the original poster asked what artist you have difficulty "getting into," which i took to mean the listener is having trouble understanding and/or appreciating the artist. however, in many people's replies there is a direct or implied criticism of the artist for this lack of appreciation. in effect, "it's braxton's fault i don't like him," or "brubeck doesn't deserve my understanding or appreciation." it's one thing to "not get it" and another thing "not to want it." if the former is true, the door's still open, as long as your ears and your mind are too. in the case of the latter, it seems rather silly or petty to say someone's not great because you lack the understanding or appreciation that others enjoy. one more thing - wynton sucks!
  12. i'd rather pay $50 to see zorn at yoshi's than pay $60 to see michel legrand at birdland. still, for that much do-re-mi, you'd think zorn could at least manage to smile.
  13. oh goody, goody. yet another reason for people to spend their money on recordings they already know and most probably already own. once again, people are being encouraged to buy sound rather than music. obviously, there's no need to create a demand for companies to support and release current works by artists when there's still vaults full of stuff that's 50 years old. if people see these projects as the future of jazz and other creative improvised music, then maybe they deserve the pitiful 3% of the pie they're now getting. for me, i'll enjoy the old but seek out the new.
  14. not at all. if i were, the kid would be named "zeppo" or "gummo."
  15. my wife and i were going to name our newborn son "Allen," but now we've agreed to name him "Karl."
  16. welcome karl. i had the pleasure of seeing you and some other great musicians perform at the benefit for the cms archive in nyc last october. i look forward to your contributions on this board, and to the opportunity to hear you play again. btw, that octet date you did in january - "in the spirit of don cherry" - sounds like it must have been quite an evening!
  17. cow, steer, heiffer...it's all BULL!
  18. miles says: i really dig hernandos clothes 'cause you don't feel like you have anything on ...i mean everything he makes me immediately becomes a part of me as soon as i put it on... forgive me, but if you have leather on and it feels like it's a part of you, to the point where it doesn't seem like you're wearing any clothes, aren't you a cow?
  19. now that you mention it, a search of the session index of the grant green discography failed to turn up the song title "blues in green."
  20. then perhaps the residents there should accept that fact and landscape accordingly. my parents' home in tuscon has a lovely small yard, but there's no grass. except when i sneak some in during a visit.
  21. i couldn't agree with you more. a lot of this creative improvised music didn't really make sense to me until i starting attending live performances where i could see as well as hear the communication, the dynamics, and the relationships between the musicians. sure, it takes more effort - you're less likely to experience this kind of music in a typical jazz club than you are at a college, an art gallery, a church, or a museum - but it's definitely worth it. heck, i've seen some great shows at a ymca and a vfw!
