Jim Duckworth's Achievements

  1. Exactly. I am not an audiophile but distortion is clearly evident on those.
  2. I was thrilled to get the RCA box but disappointed that there was distortion marring two of my favorite tracks. I am going to look into The Fremeaux set...
  3. Yes! I thought I was just going to listen to disc 1 as a start but ended up listening to the entire performance. Fantastic.
  4. "Special guest Jim Spake, a Memphis saxophone mainstay, is heard on soprano sax on the title track." That's my guy! jd
  5. In 1937 it was hard to beat Allan Reuss, John Kirby, and Cozy Cole who played together on sessions by Billie Holiday, Lionel Hampton, and Teddy Wilson.
  6. Art Tatum Jewels In The Treasure Box: The 1953 Chicago Blue Jazz Club Recordings - Resonance This too was recorded at the Blue Note (the actual title is Jewels in the Treasure Box: The 1953 Chicago Blue Note Jazz Club Recordings). It is three cd's or three lp's of the Art Tatum Trio with Slam Stewart and Everett Barksdale.
  7. I gave myself grief for purchasing this disc (and many others) which I could then easily stream. If I hadn't bought it, I wouldn't have been listening to it yesterday.
  8. Listening to Charles Tolliver sent me scrambling for this one.
  9. https://www.frog-records.co.uk/products/dgf69 This is the one you want, but I don't see it currently on Discogs. I find Frog reissues to be excellent and this one does not disappoint: it has early recordings including the most useful one they cut as Andy Preer's Cotton Club Orchestra.
  10. A saxophonist friend recorded the Tina Brooks set for me on cassette, and I spent the entire summer with those tapes in constant rotation,
  11. Cab Calloway started his orchestra by taking over the St. Louis band The Missourians who were an outstanding band and made some really good records on their own. I recommend them.
