And Rafa has 2 Wimbledons only and hasn't even made the final in 11 years. (And btw, if Borg played as long as Rafa has, Rafa would still be chasing him for French wins, and of course be trailing on Wimbledon titles, to boot.)

    Facts:

Djokovich is the better all-court player.  Roger has problems on clay, Rafa on grass. Djokovich is dangerous everywhere.

And for the record, my rooting interest is:  Roger > Rafa, and Djokovich under no circumstances ever. But I do recognize facts.

That's swell. Roger is second best, Joker (like Roger, got lucky with the French). Period. None of those dudes got what they got, because Rafa wasted them in the finals...and when he was in the finals, he wins.   14-14. Stan the Man is the only other one to walk away with two.

I suppose this "upcoming" (back in late 2020) Hat Hut release is now redundant

Not interested in this boxset. Loooove this pic of Ayler/concept on the cover by HAT. But after Albert was (forced) to fire Donald, there was a major piece missing in his music at this period for me. Impulse though, after they tried to portray Albert as some sort of majestic hippie (like some Rasputin gypsy) but he fought on and none of his music suffered ( severely) thereafter; he didn't strike me as radio friendly either, which was their aim. Impulse did him fine nonetheless. Drove one of the most ingenious minds in the dirt. My opinion of course.

Out of the four majors. I don’t what we’re even arguing about honestly.  I like Rafa and have followed him for years; I lived in Spain years ago and follow Spanish athletics. We are both Real fans!

You're cool Brad, it's all good, maybe I just don't have the opportunity to talk tennis much.

Yes, I’m sure. Setting aside his domination at Paris, they each have 20 or more, plus let’s not forget that 14 of Nadal’s 22 are at one tournament (which is pretty impressive) whereas Djokovic’s are pretty spread out.  I’m not a Djokovic fan but he’s a fantastic player and whether Medvedev was there or not wouldn’t matter. He’s won the last two Wimbledons and he’ll be rightly favored here.

" whereas Djokovic’s are pretty spread out. "

Pretty spread out how? Out of those 20, Joker's got 2 French out of 20!

  5. I like Stanley (especially with his brother Tommy) especially on the Parlan's. And there is a good few I like after that, " Look Out!", "That's Where It's At," etc. Blue Hour though, and I have the Connie, is a mood swinger towards lounging: Gotta be relaxed and ready to doze with a glass of fine cognac and a cozy fire. To me, otherwise, I don't know why else I'd put this on.

Edit to say, Grant Green's Am I Blue, bypasses the cognac, fire, coziness, etc....unconscious.

  6. Found this one and like it a lot (Goodwill of all places!) Stefano Bollani-Piano Solo (2006).

Did Stanko ever make a bad album? Even if he's a sideman I'm down for it.

...no, I don't think he ever made a bad album too, but he never got to me either. I had two of his ECM's and never went back to them and sold them. I can't put my finger on it, but like he sounds so mechanical about his business I guess. Excellent musician, maybe he's just too ECM'd, I don't know how to put it. Safe, maybe.

My ex-wife used to do this to me all the time because she knew I knew everything (down to catalogue numbers) in my collection, that when I wasn't home or asleep, she would miss-file something and wait for my reaction later (this could take hours, days, months...) where I would finally freak out and say, "where the fuck is it?" and she would just burst out laughing, knowing how meticulous my filing system was. Who does that??? Well, I did say "ex"....

  8. In the midst of all this, I stumbled across this movie while I was out of town on tv (among HBO's usual run of movies, that I've been watching since I was 10 (Clash of the Titans, Ghostbusters, Alien...,) The Many Saints of Newark (2021) maybe was his last movie, but it's another version of the young Soprano, a good fella like approach to the gang life like Goodfellas was about. I only watched about a half hour of it, then we had plans to do something, but it looked really good. Anyone no what I'm talking about?

22 titles says it all but Roger and Djokovic each have 20 so I don’t know that we can say that Rafa is unique. Djokovic will be favored at Wimbledon where he has won six times and if he’s allowed to compete at the US Open, he will be favored there too. Hopefully, Rafa can play at Wimbledon.

" I don’t know that we can say that Rafa is unique" Sure about that??? What's unique to you? Who has 14 majors at one event?

Roger has effectively retired. Joker may get lucky since Wimby is banning Russian players, including his biggest contender, Medvedev. But no one will ever get close (in the open era) to having that many majors at one event alone. Like even 8 seemed impossible (to the average player.)

  10. Like others, I find his BN period to be the most satisfying (probably up to Kofi for me.) The sessions with Sonny Red that culminated in the records, Mustang, Blackjack and Slow Drag are awesome (meaning very enjoyable); but reconsidering Byrd's BN sideman work, perhaps Dex's One Flight Up is my favorite of his, especially the first track.

14th Roland Garros; 22th major. There will never be anyone like him.

And I'll start I am a Roger fan through and through, but Rafa now has as many French titles as Sampras total...and Pistol Pete doesn't even have a French tucked in there; in fact, never even got near it! Why I bring up Fed? He got one, but if it wasn't for Soderling taking out Rafa in the quarters, he could've maybe never had one either. But in terms of greatness, I'm willing to concede, Rafa is perhaps the greatest tennis player (open era) of all time. I mean 14 major French titles alone?!?!?! Sick!

Some rare live footage to enjoy — over 48 minutes worth, from 1970! — as we think back on this unique voice in the music…

This seems to have just been uploaded a couple months ago.  I’m copying over the particulars, in case the video disappears later…

Upload title: The 360 Degrees Music Experience - Live @ Molde Jazz Festival 1970

Description: Beaver Harris drums, Grachan Moncour III trombon, Roland Alexander sax, Dave Burell piano, Jymie Merrit bass, Buzzy vocals

    00:00 Part 1 - New Africa

    15:40 Part 2

    32:25 Part 3

    46:44 Presenting musicians...

The 360 Degree Music Experience was an American band that performed both traditional and experimental jazz. Active during the 1970s and '80s, the group was initially co-led by drummer Beaver Harris and the pianist Dave Burrell. After Burell left the group, pianist Don Pullen replaced him. Several other notable musicians were members of the band at one time or another, including Hamiet Bluiett, Cameron Brown, Ron Carter, Ricky Ford, Jimmy Garrison, Grachan Moncur III, Titos Sompa, and Buster Williams among others. The group released two albums for BMG: From Ragtime to No Time and A Well Kept Secret - from Wikipedia

Man, this thread is getting to me. RIP! If it wasn't for Jackie's Destination...Out!!!  I would've never known about GMIII! Like how I discovered Grant Green on Lee's Search for the New Land, who would've known what a gem was tucked in there. Man, this hurts.

  13. This dude lived jazz (Miles, Lou, Pepper, Chet, Gerry...) This life is tough. Abandonment, how do you want to call it, the "industry" turned their back on Hank. 80's, blah.

I don't know that this story confirms that Mobley was not having money problems nor that he had a steady place to live. Not many people will admit to either condition in life, especially the guys from Hank's generation. I bet if the interviewer asked him how he was feeling, he'd probably say he was "fine". That's all my dad ever said until the day he died.

Yeah. Knowing what he left us, a treasure, this is sad. I can't imagine not having his records in my listening realm. He really gave us everything and left everything in return.

Yeah maybe. There is almost no photo of Hank without a cigarette.

You can enjoy tobacco, but you should not "eat" it like peanuts....., so maybe it was lung cancer or emphysema (Dexter also had emphysema and throat cancer and almost sure liver cirrhosis due to excessive drinking).

This dude got him beat. Who's got that dude beat?  Mal Waldron. That's who. Every fucking cover, he's smoking. Think that dude lived, breathed and dreamt about cigarettes.  Only time I think when it comes to puffing big time is Blakey, or that Elvin Jones and Richard Davis Impulse record, where they're smoking like there's another carton more to smoke.   That whole album cover is smothered  in smoke.

  16. Us at the concert. That's me and my wife on the right. Oops I meant left, those are our friends on the right, me and my wife are on the left.

Check this out. Being a jazz nut, love metal, this is really, really, cool.

  17. Well if we're going to weigh in manuscripts/books v. movies, my first big let-down started with Copulas' adaption of Hinton's "The Outsiders;" couldn't stand it. Hated the cast, acting (can't stand Ralph Machio, Matt Dillon) clearly the director (Nick Cage's uncle) I was 12 when that crap was released.
