Thanks to our own Michael Weiss I saw the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra at Billboard Tokyo last night.
I thouroughly enjoyed the evening, a really great line up of first class players and the sound was truly impressive at close quarters. A packed and enthusiastic audience helped too.
Thanks again Michael.

Bought this from Michael at the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra concert in Tokyo last night. Great stuff!

PM sent to describe my thoughts and observations and the Harriott 'Movement'.
Fantastic selection of original Blue Note and Prestige pressings of all vintages and some vey good deals available on King and Toshiba reissues, not surprisingly. Also a sprinkling of Mosaics (JohnJ got the best deal on the Pacific Jazz Trios Select).
Indeed I did!
Less that $15 for the Pacific Jazz Piano Trios Select is definitely a good deal!
Really glad that you enjoyed the various Disk Union's as much as you did and had such a positive experience with their service.

Royals sweeping Angels partying it up the rain, beautiful on many levels.
Same for Scioscia pulling C. J. Wilson after 2/3 inning.
C'mon Royals!
No love for the Orioles in these parts?

Larry Young - disk #1
As it happens, me too!

Sidewinder, just a few weeks now right!

Bought this at the main jazz Disk Union in Ochanomizu. Outer box is rather frayed but seems a bargain at the equivalent of around $40.

Five star review in today's Guardian.

I'm a major fan too. Great cast and good tv writing. Looking forward to next season. They don't let it get stale!
+1. POI is perhaps the most purely entertaining show currently on TV. Watching season 3 at the moment. Unlike Shawn, I like all the major characters a lot, indeed Ms. Acker may be my least favourite.
Also watching Foyles War
They are showing seasons 1-5 on AXN Mystery and I find it to be brilliant TV.

Appears on this box set. Not cheap though!

App? Is there an actual app or just the website in the smartphone layout? I use that sometimes as well - again, no big issues at all.
I wonder if those complaining still remember the old yellow-ish layout, c. 2000? Now that did suck, though it had some kind of charm.
It's an actual app (All Music by Rovi). I'm pretty sure I downloaded it from the Apple Store. It functions differently than the web site. If you get it, there's one little trick you need to learn to make sure previous search entries are cleared, otherwise it works pretty well.
Just received an e-mail from All Music about the app so downloaded to my iphone. It will be a useful resource (along with the Amazon app) when browsing in Disk Union!

I'll be at the Tokyo Billboard Live October 30 - November 1 with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Happy to comp if I can. Send me a PM if interested.
My scheduled dates for Tokyo are Oct 19th to 23rd - damn, yet again I am one week too early. Would have really liked to have seen the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and been able to say 'hello'. Ah well....
While you're in Shinjuku you might like to travel a few stops on the Chuo line to Ochanomizu, which has another good Disk Union, with maybe a better used section than the Shinjuku shop. Travel time is about ten minutes. If you need any additional help, feel free to get in touch.
Thanks ! Maybe we can convene a board-member Disk Union store Official Expedition?
Looks like I'll be spending a few days in Tokyo in October en-route to Oz and will of course seek to make a very rapid bee-line straight to Disk Union . Any recommendations? - will probably be staying in the Shinjuku area.
i'll be making my annual trek in (probably later) october as well...
Excellent !
So jealous...never been to Japan and there's so many Japanese free jazz LPs I'm after!
I've only ever been once before and that was on a 1-hour stopover, over 20 years ago. I've been itching to get back ever since !
Luggage allowance is going to completely mess me up re: record buying..
Sidewinder, if you arrive early enough Sunday October 19th would be a good day to get together (working during the week). We can hit Shinjuku and Ochanomizu as Kinuta suggests. Maybe you would be available too Kinuta?

Great store! Try to cycle over there a couple of times a month.

Sidewinder, let me know your details and I can show you around Shunjuku (including the Disk Union's) if you like.

Glad to hear Ray's has survived the move. I'd imagine it probably does reasonably well because there is virtually no competition.
Having said that, I've been in there maybe four times in the last 8 months and only bought two CDs. In both cases things that weren't available as downloads, so were a similar price online to in-store. I found what was there to be quite patchy, though strong on new releases. The latter were at least double the price I'm now used to paying (admittedly downloads). Which is why these places struggle with all but those who prefer physical discs.
Regrettably, this is pretty much the standard experience in shopping at the very few specialist jazz shops left. A few times I've even found myself buying CDs at prices considerably higher than I know I can get online, in a misplaced spirit of loyalty. Nowadays the only time I use 'bricks and mortar' shops is to buy second-hand CDs, mainly items no longer available online, or good old vinyl where the online option is rather more limited.
Not in Tokyo. I buy a fair bit at Disk Union at prices cheaper than available online, often considerably cheaper (I always check Amazon on my iPhone).

I assume the 'guys' of the title is used in the none-gender specific way that under 40s use the term today. Young teachers use the address 'O.K. guys, you need to quieten down now' or 'Excuse me guys but can you not dangle Stephanie out of that window, we are on the third floor.' Whether the audience are guys (in the old sense), gals or both.
Having said that, I don't see many gals.
OK, then I feel I must mention Monday Michiru.
I remember her as a very friendly and fun gal when we used to frequent the same small bar in the Roppongi area.

Has Don Draper ever not been damaged goods? That's kinda been like the basic premise from jump, eh?
I think we are all damaged goods to a certain extent and there is a bit of Don in all of us. Quite a lot in me to be honest!
Anyway, like most here, I love Mad Men.

The Good Wife
No spoilers but a very major plot development.
Don't miss it if you've been following the show.
Great episode.
"Major" for sure.
Love the 'Good Wife' but just finished season 3.
No way to avoid this spolier in the twittersphere.
Just started watching 'Ray Donovan'. Impressive so far, any fans here?

Picked this up at Disk Union. The price was right, just over $40.

SecondSpin is another. Big selection, if not everything in their stock. JSngry is right about gohastings.com. And there's always a promo.
SecondSpin is great. They sometimes have 30% off sales and free international shipping which makes their prices the best around. Good selection too.

What's really unusual is that it's not them doing a random selection of Everly Bros tunes, it's them doing their
Songs Our Daddy Taught us album in it's entirety...
So folks should buy the Everly's version of Songs Our Daddy Taught Us instead of listening to two copycats.
Too harsh. From what I have heard I actually prefer this to the original.
Positive review in The Guardian.
