Does anyone know if it is a violation of copyright laws (i.e., illegal) to rip (or otherwise copy) for one's own use a CD borrowed from a library (which presumably has been paid for with taxpayer money)? I know that there are all kinds of moral issues with this, and personally I believe in supporting the music and the artist by purchasing CDs or downloads, but I recently saw a thread somewhere that got me thinking about this and I was just curious whether the practice is technically legal.

  2. About a month ago, I sent back my Prima/Monone, Herman Capitol, and Mildred Bailey sets back to Mosaic, along with $30, and got back in exchange Farlow, Farmer/Golson, and Johnny Smith sets. I just was not listening to the former three, and I could tell that I originally purchased them and kept them around because I thought I *should* have them. Now, I have sets that I really want to listen to. Jazz should be pleasurable, not work or duty.

    :tup Sometimes that's difficult to remember! I'm sure we've all gotten sucked into buying something because it's a "must have," just to find out that one person's "must have" is another's "must not."

    I haven't really had a real dissapointment with a Mosaic set, but I'm not sure I'm in love with the Herman set either. Great playing, but way too much Woody vocals for my taste. I also recently bought the Verve Basie set and have been wondering if its something I will really listen to very much -- so I haven't opened it yet.

  3. Not all that unusual. I think my collection numbers less than 400 but I have 8 Mosaics. Of those 8, the Mobley, Rivers, and Tristano/Konitz/Marsh easily fall into the "essential" category. The other ones (Atlantic New Orleans, Thad Jones BN/UA/Roulette, JJ Johnson, Anita O'Day, and Blue Mitchell) I grabbed because they were going OOP and I knew I might never see some of the albums individually.

    That's sort of my situation. Actually, I just counted and I have 13 sets. Some are sets where I was familiar with the artist and figured I couldn't go wrong -- e.g., J.J. Johnson, Sonny Stitt, Hank Mobley -- and others I was less familiar with a musician's work, but listened to samples and figured I would take a chance -- e.g., Woody Shaw, Tristano/Konitz Marsh, Jazz Crusaders.

    I don't think I would say that "I'm just getting started." Actually I've been playing and listening to jazz for some time. It's just that my buying habits are fairly haphazard. I suppose maybe I could sell some of the Mosaics and use the money for some other "essential" CDs, but I don't see much purpose in that, because the music is generally great. I guess the better course is probably to start buying more single CDs and only jump to a Mosaic if there is something I'm interested in that's in danger of going OOP. I would love the Buddy Rich and upcoming Dizzy Gillespie sets, for example, but they will obviously be around for a while. The Selects also seem like they would be a good way to explore a new artist or more of a familiar musician.

    I don't know why. I just seem to get drawn to those big black and white boxes :crazy:

I don't have a large CD collection by the standards of many who frequent boards like this (probably in the 200-300 range rather than thousands -- maybe about 1/3 of which is not jazz), but I do own about 10 Mosaic sets and the list of "wants" in terms of the large box sets and selects and singles continues to grow. So, the quandry. In a world of limited resources, can one build a reasonable jazz library focused almost exclusively on Mosaic releases? Or do you think the sets are just too narrowly focused on a portion of a musician's career and there is too much other "must have" stuff out there?

  5. Maybe this is a strange question, or perhaps there are others exactly like me out there, but I find myself being much more careful with my Mosaic sets. I generally don't like taking the CDs in the car, but instead make a copy so I can leave the original at home. I read the booklets carefully so pages don't get bent.

    Now, don't get me wrong, I generally treat things I own with care, but with Mosaic sets it's almost like that "new car" feeling. They just get a little more attention than other things.

  6. Let's face it, Mosaic box sets are not inexpensive. Yet I, like many here, have purchased a number of them. In my case, some Mosaics I have purchased were my first introduction to an artist. I admit that 5-9 CDs of an artist that I may or may not know much about is a lot of music.

    I'm curious how often others do this. And for those who do buy Mosaic sets or other large box sets, with all of the music out there, what makes you choose a box set covering a specific period or label of one artist's output vs. buying a number of individual CDs from that artist's career or buying various CDs from different artists? (I am assuming that most people have limited resources and that a purchase of a Mosaic set precludes the purchase of other CDs, at least until the next month's budget :g )

    Sorry to break into the thread, but I wanted to say how helpful (and costly :lol: ) this has been for me. I am a new member to the forum and only recently became aware of its existence. As a result of the posts here, last night I ordered the Count Basie Mosaic from Amazon UK and the Jazztet and Gerry Mulligan sets from JPC. I already have several other sets which I have purchased direct from Mosaic or used.

    After ordering the Mulligan set, I guess I'm feeling a bit of remorse/guilt for not buying it directly from Mosaic. The price difference was not that great and I do believe in supporting the company that made these sets possible. I guess my question is, what is the resale value of the "universal" sets like? That is, if I decided to sell the Mulligan set on Ebay, would I likely get my money back so that I could then buy from Mosaic? Maybe I'm just being silly :unsure:
