  1. Grant Greens "First Session" was released in 2001, so the interview must have taken place in the year 2000. According to Richard Cook, the interview was released in: Doobop, No. 5 (2000).
  2. It's Good Friday, hearing Coltrane, Crescent. Books covering Blue Note Records: of course, Richard Cook is a must-read ! I don't know was happend with the book from Ashley Kahn "Somethin' else". Still waiting, and waiting, and waiting ... for 10 years now ! But there is "Uncompromising Expression" by Richard Havers, it is a good read, too. It's a pity there is no colllection of the liner-notes by Bob Blumenthal for the RVG-reissues, they were great. The best thing would be, Mr Cuscuna would finally write the book you ask for.
  3. The winner is - of course ! - Moanin' Mosaic is a great opening track, too, one of my favorites. But Moanin' is not only the greatest track on a Blue Note Album, it is simply one of the greatest Jazz-songs.
  4. Bennie Green, Soul Stirrin' - Soul Stirrin' Lonnie Smith, Think! - Son of Ice Bag Sonny Clark Trio - Be-Bop
  5. My favorite late night Blue Note albums are Ike Quebec's "Heavy Soul" and "Blue and Sentimental"
  6. Hutcherson and Elvin Jones team up perfectly together with Larry Young on Grant Green's "Street of Dreams". I love this exceptional record. Great cover, too !
  7. Funny choice, again with Chick Corea as side-man. It contains "La fiesta". Great version of this song.
  8. Richard Havers doesn't like the cover of "Total Eclipse": "Neither did Reid Miles design the cover and boy does it show. Instead of a unique Blue Note sleeve, the cover artwork could have been designed by just about any major label. One designer can sure make a difference!" (uncomproming expression, page 303) That's right for "San Francisco", but not for "Total Eclipse". I think "Total Eclipse" has a "unique Blue Note sleeve". Great music, great Cover.
  9. "Total Eclipse" and "San Francisco" are among my all-time favourites. I don't like the cover of "San Francisco". The cover of "Total Eclipse" ist great, one of the first after Reid Miles quit doing covers for Blue Note.
  10. Hart to believe it was a thankyou. LaRoca backed only 10 Blue-Note-recordings from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. 10 Blue Notes out of 500.
  11. Pete LaRoca, Basra. One of the finest albums I know.
  12. o.k., a pretty nice record. Nothing more. Please try "Bass on Top". It's a real classic !
  13. My favourite Jimmy Smith Cover! It has nothing to do with Frank Wolff or Reid Miles. It is from Akiyoshi Miyashita.
  14. In 2006, all four titles were bonustracks of the classic album "Softly As A summer Breeze" In 2014, only one track "Ain't No Use" was part of Blue Note: Uncompromising Expression - The Singles Collection
  15. Blue Note: The SP Days 1939-1952 (TOCJ 5231-5238, Japan, 1990)
  16. If you want to pay: https://www.faz.net/aktuell/feuilleton/pop/gespraech-mit-ravi-coltrane-ueber-seinen-vater-15662494.html In 2014, Cuscuna wrote new liner-notes:"That session was plagued by some problems with the audio an with Lee Morgan's lip. Only three of the six tunes were worthy of release ..."
  17. You need a chat with Ravi Coltrane. In 2018, he told a german newspaper: Naimas family has unissued tapes, and his mother Alice has unissued tapes, too. There is more to come. (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, June 28, 2018).
  18. I can't believe Horace Silver was proud of "Total Response". Blue Note should have rejected this complete session. They did not! I did buy it, and it annoys the heck out of me. Alas, no chance for Silver to destroy the tapes.
  19. Hoping for the "recently discoverd" last Blue Note Session from Jackie MacLean with Woody Shaw, Tyrone Washington an Bobby Hutcherson from July 5, 1968. I really can't believe that every track of the session is so bad that it must stay in the vaults for all eternity.
  20. Seven were chosen: Art Blakey: Drums Around The Corner Lou Donaldson: Man With A Horn Grant Green: Blues For Lou Bobby Hutcherson: The Kicker Dizzy Reece: Comin' On Jimmy Smith: Six Views Of The Blues Various Artists: The Lost Sessions
  21. But this volume does not move forward into color photography. The musicians remember Lion screaming at Wolff "Stop! You are clicking on my record" Has anyone ever heard a "click" on an Blue Note session ?
