  1. I bought a 26" Toshiba LCD about a year ago and I have no complaints. The sound out of the built in stereo speakers is ver good. There certainly is a difference in the picture - regular channels vs. HD channels. Oh, and my jazz video collection look and sounds magnificent! Congratulations! Marla
  2. Dear Papsrus, I'm glad Prince had you to love and care for him and I'm glad you had Prince in your life. Marla
  3. At the Angry Squire gig he could barely get enough air into the horn to play it. Of course there was a piano player. I think it might have been Duke Jordan. I don't think Hank played any original tunes. I believe it was Lodi Carr's gig. I was there. I believe it was a 2 night gig? The night I was there was definitely Duke Jordan on piano and I remember Hank sounding better for the second set - more like Hank. I also vividly remember going over to the Jazz Baroness' table to meet Mobley and ask him to sign a small black and white promo photo, which he signed "Peace and Love, Hank Mobley." I feel bad I don't remember the rest of the musicians there and sad to say I don't remember Lodi Carr. Nothing against them - I was just in a trance of disbelief that I was actually in the same room as Hank Mobley and getting to hear him live with Duke Jordan. Marla
  4. To One of My Favorite Friends in Jazzworld... Happy Birthday, Ken!!! Marla
  5. The music part of the evening was heavenly. Many of the musicians chose to speak of their friendship/musical relationship with Wig and then, in most cases, did one tune (some did two). Benny Green and Eric Reed thought of Wig as both mentor and family and these sentiments were expressed both in words and music. John Clayton performed one of Wig's favorite tunes, "Emily." Wig's son, bassist Hassan "J.J. Wiggins" Shakur performed solo and accompanied some of the other musicians throughout the evening, including his sister, Saundra. Bassist John Giannelli and his wife, Rhonda, performed a tribute to Wig. Drummers Ralph Penland, Joe LaBarbera and Roy McCurdy backed various trios. Vocalists Bill Henderson, Paula Kelly and Sandy Graham sang and Kenny Burrell performed solo. Other pianists performing were Mike Melvoin, John Campbell and Bill Cunliffe; Wig admired these guys, both as friends and musicians. Cunliffe performed Wig's composition, "Sonar." Closing the evening before a brief jam session (and rockin' the theatre) was vocalist Ernie Andrews. He performed Wig's arrangement of a somewhat obscure tune called "It Must Have Been Something I Dreamed Last Night," and sang for Wig and to Wig's wife, Lynn, "More Than You Know." The jam session featured Penland, surprise guests bassist Jennifer Leitham and trumpeter Bobby Rodriquez. My apologies for not posting all, but I don't have the program in front of me. Other than some sound problems plaguing the beginning of the evening, this was a memorable evening and a fitting tribute to a man greatly admired for his musicianship and great humanity. Marla
  6. Valerie, Thanks for both corrections, especially the parking info. Marla

  9. My apologies for starting a topic when this one already exists. I will just add the obituary from today's L.A. Times: L.A. Times Obit for Gerald Wiggins Please note that Wig was also survived by a daughter, Sandy. This information does not seem to be in the Times' obituary. A memorial service/celebration of Wig's life is tentatively schedule for the end of July in Los Angeles. Marla
  10. I did a search and could not find anything here about Wig. Wig passed away on Sunday, July 13 at the age of 86. Below are links to his obituary in today's L.A. Times, as well as beautiful rembrances from Devra Hall and Doug Ramsey: LA Times Obituary for Gerald Wiggins Devra Hall's Remeberance and Bio Doug Ramsey-Goodbye, Gerald Wiggins A memorial/celebration of Wig's life is tentatively scheduled in Los Angeles for later this month. I'll post info as soon as there is confirmation. Please note that Wig is also survived by his daughter, Sandy. This was not included in the L.A. Times obituary. Marla
  11. Blast from the past - was that slogan from the long-time-out-of-biz electronics store, Crazy Eddie's?
  12. I'm a sucker for ballads and probably one of my favorites is Mobley's solo on "Three Coins In The Fountain" from the recording, Workout. Also, "Alone Together" from Live at the Cafe Bohemia w/Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers (Vol 1). Finally, "I Should Care" from the recording, Another Workout. Three examples of Mobley's most beautiful way with a ballad. In my opinion, Hank was one of the great ballad players, right up there with Webster, etc. Beautiful and lyrical solos all the time. Marla
  13. Just purchased a copy of the soon to be released CD and looking forward! Marla
  14. Hi Denis! Yes, we do hang at all the best jazz places! Take care! Marla
  15. This is the link I used and then scrolled down to under the "Concerts" heading and clicked on which Live from the Vanguard I wanted to listen to and it worked: http://www.wbgo.org/ontheair/ondemand/index.php Marla
  16. Hi Tom, Sorry to hear that - I'm guessing maybe they are having start up difficulties. I'll check it out myself later and get back to you. I hope this works and other stations start doing the same someday. WGBH here in Boston occasionally has live jazz broadcasts from their new studios but I do not believe there are any regular jazz broadcasts yet. Back in the 1970's WBUR-FM/Boston used to broadcast live jazz gigs...I just recently obtained a wonderful broadcast of Dizzy Gillespie at a club called "Rise" in Cambridge dating back to May of '77. Diz's regular musicians Rodney Jones, Ben Brown and Mickey Roker are present and a HUGE surprised for me was that one of my all-time jazz heroes, saxophonist Jimmy Mosher, is on the gig and also local favorite, pianist Tom LaMark! Anyway, I'll check the link at WBGO and report back. Marla
  17. Folks, Just read the WBGO email news letter and this series looks verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry promising: Live Broadcasts from the Village Vanguard WBGO, Village Vanguard and NPR Music Join Forces for New Series The Village Vanguard is arguably the Mecca of jazz performance venues. Well into its seventh decade, the Vanguard is revered around the world for its rich history, its continued commitment to jazz, and its near-perfect acoustics. Taken together, these aspects make the underground club a jazz musician’s favorite place to play in the world. Next spring, WBGO, Jazz 88.3 FM celebrates its 30th anniversary as the premiere jazz broadcaster in the country, a champion for both jazz and award-winning news programming. Last fall, National Public Radio (NPR) launched the highly anticipated NPR Music site, a showcase for partner stations like WBGO. Now, this trio of music producers and presenters have come together to create a jazz experience that has never been done before - not quite like this. Live at the Village Vanguard is a newly launched monthly series from WBGO, The Village Vanguard and NPR that presents jazz programming in a completely fresh way, using multi-platform media to heighten the jazz experience. “WBGO is a public media institution. We are natural communicators, and our mission is jazz. Social media platforms give us the opportunity to build on our foundation, to find and create new fans, and to reach out to people with a real-time connection to music made in the moment,” says WBGO Special Projects Producer, Josh Jackson. WBGO's Josh JacksonMusic and social media is the core of this project. From You Tube, to iTunes, to My Space, to music blogs, music fans are continuously finding more and more ways to access and enjoy music. WBGO’s efforts in this project speak to the notion that jazz is not an exclusive genre on the margin of these expanding media trends and experiences. Beyond your typical live broadcast radio experience, Jackson will be blogging during the concerts, in real time from inside the club, on the WBGO Blog: Jazz & Beyond (WBGO.org/blog). Our broadcast team will upload photos and create exclusive content to connect personally with the public. For those who love IM-ing, and texting, you can also join Jackson in a live conversation via the WBGO chat room, and discuss the performances as they happen. Into Facebook and Snapfish? Perfect. You can view a constantly-updated photo gallery on Flickr, an online photo management and sharing application. Jazz content currently accounts for 15 percent of the music on the NPR music site, and NPR believes this is an exciting way to reintroduce the genre to its overall audience. The Village Vanguard continues to blaze the trail when it comes to live performance. Owner Lorraine Gordon did not hesitate when she was approached with the idea of a broadcast collaboration. "It’s an honor and a pleasure to work with WBGO. [W]BGO is a part of the structure of jazz today and the scene…very necessary." 18. Hey Mark, Congratulations and sounds like a wonderful day - we're all real proud of you and I look forward to purchasing one of the posters! Marla
  19. Thanks for the mini-update, Jazzshrink. Mark really did a great thing and that's what it is all about - keeping the jazz community together whenever possible. We've lost so many of the great Boston-born jazz musicians - Alan Dawson, Herb Pomeroy. But then again, Roy Haynes is still very much with us, as is Phil Wilson, Andy McGhee...great idea, but I imagine a huge undertaking! Marla
  20. Hi, Has Mark reported back on his "A Great Day" project? Thanks, Marla
  21. I haven't had to cut back on driving trips yet, because mine are relatively short. I do worry that if I get a job requiring a drive every day, that the gas prices will put a huge dent in my pocketbook. I also heard (and not remembering which airline) that one or some airlines are now going to charge a small fee for requesting an aisle or window seat?!?!?!?! Marla
  22. I have a 2000 Maxima requiring premium gas. I just filled it from about 1/2 a tank at $4.12/gallon. I'm driving to NYC (from Boston area) next week; I better plan on at least $125 for fuel expense (not to mention the $40/day parking fee to keep my car in a parking garage)! Marla
  23. I e-filed early and I'm still not getting mine 'til mid-July, which is fine - last two digits of my S.S. # are very high. Whenever it arrives, I'm sure I'll know what to do with it, which will include possibly just not spending and hangin' on to it for an emergency in the future. Marla
