  1. "Under The Double Moon" by Anthony Davis and Jay Hoggard is a really good album. Do not know if it ever came out on CD and may be OOP but worth looking into. Spotify maybe.

A couple thing a little different are Mattias Stahl/Sten Sandell - "Gran Musik (Clean Feed) and Futari (which is Taiko Saito - marimba and vibes and Satoko Fujii - piano) "underground" (Libra).

This instrumentation is a favorite for me too.

  2. Thanks for this topic.  Took a look at my collection and found more favorite albums from this decade than I would have thought.

Richard Grossman - "Solo Piano Improvisations"

Henry Threadgill - "Rag, Bush And All"

Michael Moore's Available Jelly - "Available Jelly"

Antonello Salis - "Orange Juice/Nice Food"

Sean Bergin - "Kids Mysteries" (first CD I ever bought)

    Kahil El'Zabar/Lester Bowie/Malachi Favors - "The Ritual""

Quintet Moderne - "Ikkanan Takana=Behind The Window"

Ganelin Trio - "Jerusalem February Cantabile"

    Walt Dickerson - "Life Rays"

    Dave Burrell - "Windward Passages"

Very much agree with your recommendation on "Stengam".

I had looked for another solo album called " 7 CC IN IO" for a long time finally broke down and made an international purchase from Discogs in July.  As it turned out it was shipped to me 2 days before Mr. Fuhler was called home.  It is pretty darn good as well but hard to find.

Nice, did not expect anybody to mention Olivia Block on this board.

I guess you might have seen there is one copy available for sale at Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/10959607?ev=rb

You could also try sending a message to the Discogs members who have this CD: https://www.discogs.com/release/stats/10959607#collection. I do it occasionally, and more often than not receive offers in response.

And you might also want to check with Ms Block herself: https://www.oliviablock.net/contact-1

Thanks for the suggestions.  The last two I honesty had not thought about.  I reached out to Ms. Block, will see if she responds.

I've listened to the album on bandcamp and love it.  The art work is pretty cool also, which is why I would kind of like to find a copy of the CD.

Interesting. What's this like? I've seen Pat Thomas gigging around North London quite a few times and I really like his playing, but I don't know him as a leader at all.

My skills at putting what I hear into words are limited.  I bought it from Bandcamp, https://577records.bandcamp.com/album/bleyschool .  You could listen to a couple tracks.

I used to be heavily into this scene about 10-15 years ago but lost track of it since about 2010 or so. I unfortunately don't live near where these performers can be seen live (when there are live performances, that is). What are the best avant-free jazz recordings of the last 5-10 years? I want to get back into it.

I haven't followed the forum much for a while, so take my opinions with a grain of salt. The best things I've heard recently:

Pat Thomas, Dominic Lash & Tony Orrell - “BleySchool”

Tyshawn Sorey & Marilyn Crispell - “The Adornment of Time”

Evan Parker - “As The Wind”

MMM Quartet - “Metz Arsenal” This one is a little older but I only heard it recently.

I think the above would be considered free.

Not sure if “Fly Or Die” by Jamie Branch is exactly free jazz but it is absolutely one of the best pieces of music I've heard for a long time.

I will be interested to see what responses you get here.

  7. Scott,

I tried to leave comments on your blog but for some reason it didn't work.

Just wanted to thank you for your efforts.

I started listening to "jazz" in the 70s (my 20s) and this is a lot of fun.  Sadly I don't know anything you've posted so far, so I must not have been paying attention back then.  I am looking forward to following along and maybe I will even recognize something along the way. :O)

  9. peterintoronto, thanks for the suggestion but I had looked at discogs.  Two of the U.S. sellers had a number of negative comments and the one that didn't wanted $50.  The negative comments give me pause.  On the other hand I never worry at all about the guys who sell on this forum.

If I don't have any luck I may give discogs another look.

The Raspberry Pi IS a computer, but is a lot cheaper than a PC or Mac.  It doesn't come with a DAC, so Stefan added one.  Note that it may be of better quality than the DACs that come with PCs.  Also, Stefan may have wanted to use a dedicated device for his music, rather than tethering his PC to his stereo every time he wants to listen to music, especially if his amp is in an awkward place.  I'm getting around those issues by creating an AirPort network for my house.  Note, though, that each set of speakers needs an AirPort receiver; that's why I was enquiring above whether a Pi can be adapted to work as an AirPort receiver.  It looks like it can, with a little work.

I've just ordered an Pi for my son and I to assemble over his summer break.  I think it will be good for him to follow the directions, see what doesn't work, get frustrated, consult the documentation and web sites, and get it right.  After that, he may want to tailor it to fit any particular projects he may envision.

Thanks mjzee.  If I fully got into digital like Stefan, I can see the virtue of an inexpensive dedicated device.  I don't think I have the assembly skills you and your son have, though.

One more dumb question.  You would need some kind of monitor, no?

I use Spotify.  But What I have done is ripped 95% of my music on to hard drives, and connect it to a Raspberry Pi with a HiFiBerry DAC+ which I can run it to my stereo.  It is phenomenal.

I hope you guys won't mind a dumb question.

What is the benefit of something like this over just running your pc straight to your stereo?  Thanks.
