  2. I heard a song (Money Jungle) on the Red Hot + Indigo Ellington tribute compilation. It is by Black Star, and features Ron Carter and John Patton (plus some other dudes). And I guess Black Star is Mos Def? Has anyone heard this? It is hip hop over jazz, with a killer groove. The vocals go back and forth between melodic singing and rapping. I really, really like it. It is similar to what The Roots have going on, but jazzier, and with more singing. I'm not a hip hop fan, but this really appeals to me because of the singing and the organ and the sweeeet groove. I'd really like to hear more stuff like this, but I don't know where to look. Any suggestions? Thanks Leanne
  3. Oasis: I'm not a fan and haven't heard much of their music. But I saw them open for someone about 8 years ago or so. Yikes. It was one of my most painful experiences ever. Sorry. Just my opinion, though. Favorites from the last decade or two: (more punk than rock i guess) Fugazi Minutemen, fIREHOSE At The Drive-In, Mars Volta, Sparta Modest Mouse, Ugly Casanova Descendents Living Colour Jon Spencer Blues Explosion Faith No More Black Keys ...does Prince count?
  4. (I think they've all been mentioned, but...) My favorite is Marvin Gaye, hands down. He sang with such intense emotion, mmmm. Then comes Ronald Isley. Lots of intensity there, too. And I can't leave out Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, and Aretha Franklin. Good stuff.
  5. From saxophonist Courtney Pine, after being awarded some British honor (OBE ?). http://www.collaborationuk.com/obearticle.htm
