  2. This one is so obscure I forgot about it until the question was posed.
  3. I too enjoy THIS IS THE MOMENT. But I am a KD stan who wants to know everything I can about his musical evolution. Hearing him sing is a big part of that, especially given how "vocal" his trumpet playing became starting about the time of the Time recordings (JAZZ CONTEMPORARY and SHOWBOAT), reaching its apotheosis on the Pacific Jazz/United Artists/Blue Note Jackie McLean collaborations and his work with Joe Henderson. (Oh, and Hill's POINT OF DEPARTURE.) Regarding that JAZZ PROPHETS LP... dig how hip this performance is. Among my favorite KD solos.
  4. Probably the most satisfying of KD's Riverside dates, IMO. JAZZ CONTRASTS and BLUE SPRING have never done much for me for some reason. (I need to revisit, though.) As the cover suggests, it offers a nice balance of cool and hot. It's also an important step in KD's journey to the (less overtly boppish) player he'd become in the next decade.

  6. Agree; that my by my favorite of his Blue Notes. ETCETERA is up there too.
  7. This one hurts. But we are all the richer for his having been among us for 89 years. So glad I got to see him in performance at least once.

Nice; I'd never seen the original art for these. Let us now praise Patti Bown for her contributions to the groove.
  9. A little Rick Beato goes a long way for me. Same but less so for Jarret. Still, this is a nice interview. Highlights include Keith talking about his relationship to triads and everything that's happening as he listens to himself play "Solar."
  10. On the recommendation of @JSngry. Danko's full-on Romanticism give Lee extra incentive to spin long melodic lines.

Yep, I believe all or most tracks are on that Prestige 2fer. This reminds me of this Ellery Eskelin Jug tribute record.

This might be some of the grooviest Jug I've heard.
  13. Yes, thanks! I believe to OJC adds an alternate take not on the original.
  14. This was a date Prestige (or maybe Fantasy) licensed from another label, correct? In any event, more fine Jackie from his pre-BN era, and a super-rare opportunity to hear how he sounded outside the studio.

I feel like this is a story that needs to be told to a larger audience.

One cannot overstate the incredible influence Black high school music teachers and bandleaders have had on the evolution of American music. Dyett in Chicago, Samual R. Browne in LA, G.A. Baxter at I.M. Terrell in Ft. Worth... And was it Harry Begian at Cass Tech? https://ethaniverson.com/black-music-teachers-in-the-era-of-segregation/

It's a good question. I've always thought of him as belonging to the Prez family tree. But then there's the Walter Dyett factor. Von Freeman, Cliff Jordan, John Gilmore, Johnny Griffin... he tutored a lot of unique tenor players.
