  1. The Woody Shaw set is popmarket's daily deal today (Monday March 5 2012), though the special price is the same $45.99 it has been listed as for the past several days. However, there is a 10% coupon code: SAVE10NOW that does take an additional 10% of your total order. I mention this because there doesn't seem to be any exemptions for this coupon code discount. I bought the Shaw set today, along with a couple of other jazz sets that are also part of the free shipping sale. Plus, I'm Canadian, and the coupon code did work for me. So this extra 10% discount is not restricted to US buyers.
  2. Am I correct that the "Always Something There" Blue Note LP was reissued on CD in 1991 by Fantasy/OJC? http://www.allmusic.com/album/always-something-there-r149146 If true, can someone explain the circumstances? I have read that there was also a CD reissue on EMI's Applause label: apparently a poor-sounding needle-drop. Are the Fantasy and Applause releases actually the same CD? Was Fantasy just the distributor? Thanks in advance for any explanation. John
  3. A quick note of thanks to LJazz for the Jazz Improv magazines I requested, which arrived safely this week. John Vancouver BC
  4. PM en route for fifteen of these magazines. Thanks. John
  5. PM on the way for: The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Albert Ammons & Meade Lux Lewis 3LP $30 Thanks.
  6. I had read somewhere that this book's accompanying CD was to contain a mix of released and unreleased tracks. Thanks for confirming there isn't any unreleased material included. Much appreciated. John Vancouver
  7. I wrote on November 8: A friendly bump for this question. Thanks John
  8. Can someone list the artists and tracks included on the accompanying CD? I did some google searches but couldn't find the info. Thanks, John Vancouver BC
  9. Thank you man. John Vancouver BC
  10. A tracklist and the track timings of the unreleased Vanguard material would be great. Please and thanks.
  11. The 1965 "Six By Six" sextet album was released on CD under the title "Magnitude" by Mainstream Records UK (aka Mainstream Direct) in 1991. The catalogue number is MCCD712. This is also the specific version that contains the three previously unreleased outtakes. It's easier to find online under the "Magnitude" title.
  12. I'm sending a PM (and an e-mail) with a few questions. Thanks very much, John Vancouver BC
  13. PM being sent for: MS-10 Bud Shank/Bob Cooper $65 Thanks John
  14. There definitely is a single CD version of the "Birdland Allstars At Carnegie Hall." It was released by Roulette in 1987, before the catalogue was purchased by EMI. The CD has 23 tracks, catalogue number RCD 58009. The 1987 CD's packaging doesn't have a barcode but the cover is almost exactly the same, so it's possible that uniformed retailers and ebay sellers will get this version mixed up with the 2 CD EMI set.
  15. Thanks for the confirmation. With all the 1980s remixes and CD bonus tracks, keeping track of alternate versions of the CTI material can be frustrating.
  16. Are you saying these are two different takes? Can anyone confirm the details? Thanks.
  17. George Cole, the author of the book "The Last Miles," posted some information about abandoned Sony projects to the Miles-Digest mailing list in 2007. Quote: Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2007 18:36:52 +0200 From: George Cole Subject: Bob Belden on Miles releases and more I recently talked to Bob Belden for a feature I'm writing and in the course of our chat, I asked him about Sony's Miles release strategy. It's not looking good I'm afraid and he hinted that the On The Corner boxed set could well be the last of its kind. He also revealed that he had planned to put together a series of re-releases of Miles's 1980s albums, complete with bonus tracks. This was some of the material under consideration: - 5 hours from KIX - The complete Avery Fisher shows - The complete Japan tour 1982 Star People - many live shows from board tapes plus many studio sessions. These include a duet with Miles on electric piano and JJ Johnson on trombone, plus another blues number featuring Mike Stern on guitar. Decoy - many board tapes but not so much in the way of studio stuff. You're Under Arrest- some additional stuff plus the pop songs that were never finished. Aura - the live show from Denmark could have been added to the issued CD Sadly, Sony decided to pull the project - grrrrrrrr!!! End quote
  18. I'd like to learn more about this. Do you have any more info about the CTI tapes and the various arguments over who owns the rights? Sony claims the North American rights (and Europe, also), but I have read Sony does not possess the stereo master tapes. Supposedly, up to now they've only had production copies of the album masters. I've assumed Sony does have possession of some of the multi-track session tapes, because several of the earliest CBS/CTI CDs (from the late '80s) were advertised as re-mixes. The King label seems to reissue the CTI material in Japan. Doug Payne's CTI site had an article up about two months ago stating Creed Taylor and Rudy Van Gelder were both involved in a new CTI reissue program. I don't know if this is the same program that Sony masterworks has just announced. I can't find that article on Payne's site anymore, so maybe I'll e-mail and ask him...

Producer’s Note: Both the Norvo and Bailey discographies have been riddled with errors and omissions throughout the years. However, with this set the personnel and instrumentation was obtained by the original job sheets and AFM cards at Sony as well as from ex-Norvo sidemen Eddie Bert, Buddy Christian, Leonard Goldstein and Jerry Jerome. Arranger credits were taken from Down Beat and Metronome magazines as well as the Benny Goodman, Red Norvo and Eddie Sauter archives which reside at the Yale Music Library. Although intense effort was made to obtain the best source possible, the sound quality will differ from track to track. Years ago, the norm in re-issuing 78s was to take out as much of the surface noise as possible which, although at times made for a very clean sound, lost most of the music. Our engineer Doug Pomeroy, who is generally thought of as one of the premier 78 transfer wizards (hats off of course to John R.T.Davies and Jack Towers) has brought to the forefront practically ALL of the music and eliminated to the best one can do much of the surface noise. In most cases we used the original metal parts or a clean 78 copy for transfer unless a tape, CD, or LP reissue source had better sound. However, the only source we had on “My Little Cousin” (session DDD) was taken from a simulated stereo tape. In the September 15, 1940 issue of Down Beat, a news item appears about an upcoming release of “Frankie & Johnny” with Mildred backed by Teddy Wilson and Roy Eldridge. There is no mention of this session in any file at Sony and there is no further evidence that this session ever took place. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although discographies have listed Larry Binyon (ts) and Dick McDonough (g) for this session, both were playing a job in New England. Carl Kress is our choice as guitarist since he is the voice on the underground recording of “Manure Is On The Air” which the Columbia files show as being recorded as a tag to this Dorsey Brothers session. ________________________________________________________________________ (D) MILDRED BAILEY acc. by DORSEY BROTHERS ORCHESTRA: Manny Klein (tp), Tommy Dorsey (tb), Jimmy Dorsey (cl, as), Larry Binyon (cl, ts), Fulton McGrath (p), Dick McDonough (g), Artie Bernstein (b), Stan King (d), Mildred Bailey (voc). Note: Matrix 14154, 14155, 14156 and 14158 do not include Bailey. The Columbia files show that 14 men were used on matrix 14157. Aural evidence, however, suggests the above personnel with a possible inclusion of another reed (either Lyle Bowen or Jim Crossan). The personnel for 14159 and 14160 are as above. ________________________________________________________________________ (G) CASA LOMA ORCHESTRA: Sonny Dunham, Grady Watts, Bobby Jones (tp), Pee Wee Hunt, Billy Rauch (tb), Clarence Hutchinrider (cl, as), Glen Gray (as, ldr), Kenny Sargeant (as), Pat Davis (ts), Mel Jenssen (vln), Joe Hall (p), Gene Gifford (g, arr), Stanley Dennis (b), Tony Briglia (d), Mildred Bailey (voc). The Columbia files show that Simeone handled the 1st alto book while Long played 3rd alto and solo clarinet.
