    Billy Harper

Not to sidetrack this thread, but I want to give a shout out to Francesca Tanksley, Harper's pianist of choice for the last 30 odd years. Francesca is a great musician.
  5. This was a great show. Did not realize that Allen was such a great raconteur. It also great to meet and talk with Karl and listen to the music of Grex.

  8. I have probably stopped by on average once every two years for about 20 years. Have not been for two years so I am due. PREX is in the first block of a side street, South Tulane, off the main drag. South Tulane had very limited on-street parking spots. The main drag does have parking spots but if you turned onto South Tulane and did not find a spot getting back to the Main Street is not straightforward. There is a multilevel parking garage less than five minutes walk from PREX for which on South Tulane you will see signs directing you to. As of my last stop there (and throughout all of my visits), if you spent 100 dollars and put in on a card you save 3%. spend $100 and pay cash you save 6%. I always spent more than $100 and generally was there for at least 2 hours per visit. You asked about records. I have never shopped PREX for lps and, as such, my comments below are limited to used cds. Jazz cds are in numerous places in the store. It is narrower up front in the store and then It opens up. You walk in and there was a counter on the right where you check your bag. After that counter, there were tables in the right center area under which were boxes with uncategorized $1.00 cds including jazz. ON the wall on the right were mid priced used cds ($2-6?) sorted by genre including a special area for jazz. Then, on the far left hand wall towards the back is a "new" jazz cd section that included full price ($8ish) used cds. So that is worth checking. Plus PREX has an extensive (to me) new arrival bins on one of the center tables that is worth inspecting. Plus there are bins given over to "audiophile" or "special" cds including a section for Mosaic boxes. As I recall, the full price used cd discs and maybe the midpriced used cd discs are kept behind the counter-only the jewel cases are in the bins. So you may want to allow time to check the condition of those discs. In my experience, PREX has always had more used jazz cds than any other one store I have ever shopped in including stores in San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Chicago (one visit to the Jazz Record Mart), New York and Boston. Prices are terrific.
  9. There are all the small group recordings, produced by Woofy Productions, made by musicians that lived in Las Vegas or made a living in Las Vegas, e.g., Arno Marsh, Carl Fontana, with their friends at Capozzoli's in Las Vegas: https://www.discogs.com/label/1460539-Woofy-Productions-Inc https://www.discogs.com/label/1030442-Capozzolis
  10. On the discography provided in the link, Isn't the listing of the cds issued incomplete? That is, here: https://www.mosaicrecords.com/product/the-complete-sonny-clark-blue-note-sessions/

  13. bresna: You are right of course, that cd is no longer on the jazzmessengers site. Made me wonder if I had seen it. But, through google, I found this link to that site that indicates the cd was listed at one time and states "this product is no longer in stock": https://www.jazzmessengers.com/en/95684/joe-henderson/the-complete-an-evening-w-joe-henderson Given mjazzg's reply above, makes me wonder if Red Records gave info to Jazzmessengers earlier than it should have. That cd is listed on redrecords.it but no longer as "the complete ... " and does not have the additional tracks: https://redrecords.it/store/joe-henderson/an-evening-with-joe-henderson/
  14. Yeah did not see that. nor is it available from the redrecords.it website. redrecords.it indicates that the sam rivers will be available April 14th. The Hank jones is available on the label website. strangely, I could not search in English in the store. had to search in italian and then convert to English.
  15. I received an email from Jazz Messengers about a previously unissued Hank Jones cd that it indicates was issued by the Italian Red Records label. WTF?-I thought this label was effectively dead. Then on the Jazz Messengers website I found 106 items (cds and lps) attributed to Red Records . These included cd listings for Ethnic Heritage Ensemble's "Impressions" and Sam Rivers' "The Quest", which were never previously issued on cd. And, there was a Cedar Walton's "More Blues for Myself", which is apparently comprised entirely of alternate takes from the original recording. Plus, there was a "Complete Evening with Joe Henderson" cd that has 3 previously unissued tracks (not alternates). If you are into Chet Baker, there is an apparently previously unissued concert that is now issued, so far, only on vinyl. I found no articles online (or on Jazz Messengers) that this Red Records had been revived but I did find that Red Records on its website, redrecords.it, (now available for reading in English) indicates that a Marco Pennisi bought it in 2021. Apparently, these cds on Jazz Messengers are legitimate. Interestingly, discogs (under "Red Record" or "Red Records") does not include information about new issues. Just wanted to share. Could not find that there had been a previous, recent discussion of a revived Red Records.

  17. at least one of the concerts at the Van Dyck and one of those at Holy Names where ones I attended. He played with Joe Venuti at the Van Dyck (not one of the recorded concerts) the evening after recording his album with Joe for Chiarorscuro.
  18. Just came across this site: https://www.davemckennapiano.com click on "listen"-see list of free concerts you can listen to.
  19. you would find this out quickly enough: The "1963 In Japan : Thelonious Monk Quartet - TBS, TV Broadcast, Tokyo, Japan, May 23, 1963 - Eastwind (E)EWCD702 [CD]" is available as a cd on that Fourstar budget label The Great Canadian Concert Of The Thelonious Monk Quartet - Live "Place des Arts, Grande Salle", Montreal, Canada, August 21, 1965 - CBC (Can)RM141 is readily available on -Hi- Hat, that highly "legitimate" label, and is known as something like "the Montreal Concert". The American Jazz Classics cd "Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington" includes not only the Berlin concert but also the Riverside album of the same name and a tune or two with the Duke Ellington orchestra without Monk (?) from a date that I cannot remember.
  20. I was in Paris last October and visited Paris Jazz Corner shopping for cds, not vinyl. Great store. Was there for 2 hours and could have spent more. The store is steps away from Arenes de Lutece, one of the few remaining Roman ruins in Paris.
  21. Available to view on PBS website apparently until 11-18 https://www.pbs.org/video/ron-carter-finding-the-right-notes-p8s8vx/
  22. Finished the book. To be clear, while the search for a specific fictionalized iconic record is central to the book, this is also a detective or mystery book. There are murders that occur as a result of the search and the main character solves them. The vinyl search is London and England centric but I found it easy to relate to the author's depiction of charity shops and bramble sales. Whether because the author is a vinyl collector himself or had great advisors, he accurately (to me) portrays the hunt for a specific collectable along with the arcane music and vinyl knowledge of the active collector. There is also seemingly knowledgeable presentation of audio equipment and vinyl cleaning equipment.
  23. half way through this book, which is the first in a current 5 book series: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26109016-written-in-dead-wax Hilarious. guy knows his jazz records and record collecting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Cartmel
