  1. One tune. And likely because of how ubiquitous it was, and still is really. I stand by my claim, and at least two others have agreed, so it's not like I'm just pulling it out of my ass.
  2. By "timeless" I mean it doesn't sound like it came from any particular era. You don't listen to Wish You Were Here and say, "well, that's obviously mid 70's Rock".
  3. Gone commercial! An early adopter scorned!
  4. I do want to note the extreme dichotomy between the extremely dated sound of early, especially live, Pink Floyd vs the timelessness of their later material. It’s striking how they went from one extreme to the other.
  5. Not that I can think of off of the top of my head. But no worries, I certainly wouldn’t have mentioned The Dead. I think Pink Floyd pretty much cornered the market as far as their own little subgenre is concerned. Similar to Santana in that regard.
  6. Well, in fairness I just consider Prog and Jam bands under a pretty wide umbrella. Santana put a Hispanic flavor in their music, The Allman Bros had a southern thing happening, Pink Floyd had a space-y psychedelic twist, etc..., but they were all basically playing extended live jams. I hope that clarifies things a little more. It may be oversimplification on my part, but that’s just how I choose to look at it. If you don’t, that’s fine. I don’t believe there is a right or wrong here.
  7. That’s interesting because I also went for about a decade and a half buying nothing but Jazz. It wasn’t until maybe seven or eight years ago that I started to diversify my collection again. I’ve always assumed that’s because Jazz is such a rabbit hole genre. Once you hear your first Coltrane/Monk/Miles/etc. you know you just HAVE to get at least 20 more albums of each.
  8. The Grateful Dead, Cream, and The Allman Brothers back then. I suppose you could also throw in Santana, Yes, Genesis... These days Phish is the king of them all in the live extended jam context, but they weren’t around in the late 60’s. Oh! And of course I forgot to mention King Crimson.
  9. Well, I listened to the first disc of Umma Gumma today. Set The Controls... and A Saucerful are mildly interesting at times. But it didn’t sound much better to me this morning than it did three decades ago when I first heard it. I’m glad they quickly abandoned that style because they just weren’t particularly good at it, IMO.
  10. The Beatles, Lady Gaga, Elvis, Eric Prydz, Madonna, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Michael Jackson. Which one seems just a wee bit out of place? See how easy that was? There is no need to go on a 50,000 word rant to tease out all the known, but easily dismissed, semantic implications of the words household name.
  11. Eric Prydz may be a “a big star” in the limited House/Techno genre, but in the grand scheme he’s not a household name by any means.
  12. Oh, I have no doubt that he wasn’t familiar with Pink Floyd. Mostly because there is no reason to lie about something like that.
  13. Shrdlu, in all fairness I’ve never heard of this mix of The Wall that you’ve mentioned. But to say it’s as big of a hit as the original I can guarantee is not true. Even a little.
  14. Yeah, that was exactly what I was going to start with. That first disc in my CD set should be pristine since it has only been played once.
  15. You know, I'm going to make it a point to go back and revisit their early live material. When I heard it back in my late teens/early 20's, I just don't think my ears and mind were trained enough, open enough, to let it in. So I found it to be utter garbage and dismissed it right then and there. This was well before I even knew what Jazz or improvisation was about. So a revisit is definitely in order.
  16. Now THIS I completely get! While I’ve been a huge Floyd fan since the late 70’s, I dismissed Dark Side for at least two decades and only came to truly appreciate it in my early 30’s. I simply found it overplayed, and overhyped. It wasn’t until the “it’s been on the Billboard albums chart for the last 5,137 weeks!”, and I stopped listening to Rock radio, that I was able to come to appreciate the genius of it on my terms. It’s their Sgt. Pepper, IMO. A true masterpiece that was forced down the throats of a rebellious lot as a masterpiece. I mean, PLEASE! Don’t fucking TELL me what is and isn’t a masterpiece. FUCK YOU!
  17. Oh, no question. I prefer that one, too. Even if most fans considered it a David Gilmour solo album (which I did not). I actually think The Endless River is a masterpiece. I'd rank it as my third favorite Pink Floyd album of all time. So yeah, I'm big on post-Waters Floyd.
  18. Ah, I get that, I suppose. Though I do actually like The Wall, I think The Final Cut is actually the better of the two. It took the partially dark aspect of The Wall and sent it into suicidal overdrive. Not necessarily what one would call a fun listen, but truly fascinating nonetheless.
  19. That’s weird! Do you think Wish You Were here is really that different from Dark Side?
  20. I’m a huge Pink Floyd fan, and love pretty much every album but Piper. That album just sounds so trite to my ears. Wish You Were Here is my all time favorite Rock album. My wife and I also see Brit Floyd every year (though we’ll likely skip this year), and have actually seen them twice on the same tour. First in St. Louis, then a few months later in Kansas City. I highly recommend them, they are phenomenal. Oh, and my wife and I were at opening night of The Division Bell tour at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami.
  21. FANTASTIC date! Parker, Guy, and Lytton with another brilliant outing at The Vortex. Absolutely LOVE this one!
  22. For some reason I’m remembering JC 400,000-500,000 posts. Though I could be way off. The last software iteration of JC was only around for about ten years.
  23. Having gotten into Jazz late (mid 90’s) I’ve unfortunately seen none of them. Though I have seen artists from that era that are not pictured.
  24. Same here. Though I do wonder if it’s a function of age/hearing loss. I wonder if the 18y.o. me would have the same opinion.
