Teaching the tough guy mentality to our "youts" has gone on for far too long. Where has it gotten us??? Chest bumping and bad ass talk in the NBA, shooting guns in the NFL, and so on. If you don't get it, then you're more far gone than I thought. Given how much you like to shoot your mouth off on this board, you must've lettered in at least a half dozen sports in college. And thank you for enlightening me on what college is for... I'd have never guessed. Are you seriously asserting that one cannot learn through sport participation (other than "bad ass talk" and "shooting guns")? You might want to read some of the research literature on the topic before you spout such drivel.

Sorry all, I meant to put Stan Getz on the list instead of Stan Turrentine. Although, to be honest, I far prefer Turrentine over Getz... but I certainly recognize that in any discussion regarding "influential" that Getz likely influenced more players than Turrentine. Chuck, I'm definitely going to check Prince out to try and hear what you're hearing. I voted for Ayler, mainly for the reasons Jeff posted above. I do wonder though... did John Gilmore influence Ayler more than Ayler influenced Gilmore?

Based on the interesting discussions in the "Tenor Sax Taxonomies" thread, I got to thinking... if we assume that Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Sonny Rollins, and John Coltrane are the four most significant influences on other tenor sax player, who is number five? So, it's poll time: In your opinion, who is the fifth most influential tenor sax player in the history of jazz? Keep in mind that the board restricts the number of poll options to 10, so I was limited in who I could put in the poll... if you select "Other" (and I'm assuming many will), please let us know your choice. Also, let's keep the selection to someone for whom the tenor sax was their primary instrument. For example, although I believe Charlie Parker was actually the biggest influence out of any of the tenor players listed above, the tenor sax was not his "main" instrument (the same could be said for Ornette Coleman... "Ornette on Tenor" is a hell of an album, but it doesn't quite fit here). Vote away!

Dan, thanks for these tracks. I'm also not the person to ask, but it really doesn't sound like Gene to me. If it is Gene, he's really young here... not a whole lot of that GH swagger on these tracks. But, as you say, if these tracks are from 1959 or earlier that may have been something he was still in the process of developing. Part of me is definitely hoping this is Gene... it's always nice to hear of new finds!
