  1. As a cyclist I'd far rather have free reign to throw rocks at any driver I see texting. Or at city planners who think it's fabby to add a "calming device" that causes your average driver to verve into the bike lane for fear of hitting the island. And isn't it about time to modernize the concept of "how many beers" one can drink in an hour when some of us prefer something hoppy, or stout, you know, a real beer as opposed to a fucking Miler Lite or Buttwiper?
  2. This story (including the mention of the telegram) was in Charles Cross's book on Hendrix titled Room Full Of Mirrors. So it's neat that telegram popped up. Paul was very enthusiastic about Jimi's music, going to the early shows and later ones too. He was the one who recommended The Experience to the Monterey Pop Festival. In retrospect you think "Well duh...who wouldn't want Hendrix" but it wasn't that easy and sometimes due to equipment failures, drugs or booze their shows bombed (in a bad way). There's also a story of Jimi's band being invited to a party at Brian Epstein's house and when Hendrix rings the bell Paul answer with a joint and a smile and passes it on to Jimi on the way in. So I would think Paul being so positive about Jimi's music certainly helped in Jimi thinking of him first. It's easy think of Paul as "the cute one" who got horribly schmaltzy fast, but he from the sound of it he had an active interest & curious mind in what was going on around him.
  3. I ordered it as I never got around to getting St. Louis nor the AUD Chicago show, plus it's May '77 - they just couldn't do wrong that month (well, the some of the early NY shows aren't all that, but by the 4th they were locked in). It'll be great to have a better sounding Tuscaloosa too, a show worthy of being Dick'd long ago.
  4. When looking for avatars for my fantasy baseball teams I stumbled upon a Dick Allen blog that is loaded with some great pictures. http://dickallenhof.blogspot.com The guy has created a bunch of Allen baseball cards based on designs for when Allen didn't play. There are also some amusing photoshops like Babe Ruth in the ketchup/mustard Astros uniform and Reggie Jackson in a Mariner (not just the All-Star Game at the Kingdome where Reggie really did pose in a Mariner uniform as his own wasn't available). The site has a heavy Philly slant too so it'll appeal to lots of folks here. (Actually I think it's probably been mentioned in one of our MLB threads).
  5. I find it interesting as Farrell managed the Blue Jays last year. Perhaps this sort of thing was fine when (if?) it was being done in Toronto last year. Eck got in a few jabs at Morris with his comments.
  6. Well...not sure about the "level-headed" part but god, given his upbringing...I agree about loving this set & the effect it has on revisiting the Purple. I tend to reach for discs 2-4 of West Coast Seattle when I want to hear some Hendrix.
  7. I had a Denon carousel player swallow a disc. I ended up taking the player to my friendly stereo store where I had bought almost all of my equipment. They were happy to get it out it for me and while they were doing so they couldn't find a record of my buying the player from them. I then realized that although I had gone there to buy one a couple of years earlier they didn't have it in stock and I wanted one right away so I went to Good Guys (which was now out of business). Oops. I "played dumb" however and luckily they had records of 5 other pieces of equipment I had bought from them they let it slide as the customer must be right.
  8. I almost wonder if fans get more money's worth out of reading about the overpaid player having his likeness in centurion form or sleeping with Madonna or whatnot. I don't think Pujols has that in him as instead Angel fans are more likely to be stuck with stories about how fuggin' awful and painful planter fasciitis is. What a gip! With luck he'll get divorced, get freaky at Disneyland, and you know, give those Angel fans some entertainment value in the decline phase while the Seattle Mariners look down from atop the standings. Yesiree!
  9. Oooooo, sorry about the ears & throat. Dr. Impossible to the rescue. Maybe cake all around will cure that! Hope it's a great day otherwise.
  10. I hear a little bit of E.F. Hutton there. I think Gene Autry's ghost took over the team a few years ago. Wells, Mathews Jr., a whole lot for Pujols and again for Hamilton. They seek out players who are heading away from their prime and pay them using some formula involving age & weight. Actually I'm insulting Autry, as at least good years were gotten from Carew and Grich & Baylor were still in their late 20s when they were signed.
  11. Well if it can't be President of the Andrew Hill Fan Club, it's the next best thing. Congrats!
  12. A friend forwarded an email with the "Unbroken Chain" video link and said Bobby was drunk. The Relix link mentions a shoulder injury and muscle relaxants being taken. Perhaps it was a combination. The way Phil and fake Jerry (sorry, I can't remember the old DSO guy's real name) react it's not like it wasn't unexpected as they just keep on going. So I wouldn't worry, just another night at the circus. Last year (or the year before) Bobby was accidentally dosed. The band played on.
  13. I think if he had been clean shaven and not worn a classic uniform we wouldn't be having endless conversations about him. A Padre with no mustache - who would care?
  14. I find it weird how with quite a few movies you can pre-order the DVD while it's still in the theater. I guess they're more willing to have the media ready to sell sooner as with many there's an additional waiting period for rental or streaming, so all the better to make more money. I still get a kick out of how hard it is to predict if a friend will like this movie or not.
  15. One more time. Obviously depth perception is hard. We need youtube 3D! *Edit - And for the record when I first saw it I screamed (internally) "INTERFERENCE" as depth perception is hard sometimes (plus I root for the 2018 AL West champion Seattle Mariners). But Jim explained it and it made sense.
  16. Harvey has been mighty damn good while Strasburg has looked like a mortal thus far. The Mets have a fun looking team - things are looking up!
  17. There are a couple of other big slumps out there. Jason Heyward of the Braves is hitting .115 and Matt Kemp .182 with no HR. The latter is coming off of shoulder surgery and sometimes it can take a couple of years or so to regain power (which is what happened with Beltre). Lucky for the Braves they haven't been hurt much at all by BJ or Heyward's slumps.
  18. NBC for the 1975 & 1976 season. In fact, weren't they the announcers for the famous Oakland/Miami game, that ended the Dolphins winning streak? Yes! (A non-Marv Albert "yes" there - though I like Marv fine). A couple of months ago I was watching a glory of the Raiders DVD since there's no been no glory since the Tuck Game and I was happily surprised to hear Don there after the "sea of hands" catch. That game is still my all-time favorite. I also loved Curt paired with Tony Kubek for baseball. When I get grumpy about young Buck's somewhat shrill tone I point to Pat Summerall as the example of what I'd like back in announcing. I was initially disappointed when they broke up the Summerall-Brookshier combo and paired Pat with my old Raider coach. I wasn't sure that guy would amount to anything as a color guy with his "boom" and all that.
  19. Betcha jumped a little when you saw that. Aside from the good news of seeing Monk front & center, it also means it's a slow news day for him to be there. Thanks for the tip.
  20. It sure has a great look in the previews. The hitting clip in the trailer looks weirdly like a high end video game, but I guess that's to be expected. I'm not saying this as a bad thing - more a comment on CGI and the high quality kind of video games that are out there.
  21. The original might be my most hated Beatle original and so it's very strange to be liking the minor version. Thanks for pointing it out. I was following a few of the minor-into-major songs last fall but didn't think to look for the other way around.
  22. As a Cub Lou Brock homered over the CF fence (one of 4 players to do so with that alignment) and it was said it messed with his swing for a time afterwards as he believed he was a home run hitter. Hey, who wouldn't after doing that! (Of all things Aaron hit one over CF the day before). In the late '80s I had an Amiga Computer and its version of Earl Weaver baseball came with old time parks plus you can design your own (and replicate historic ones of course). It was very cool to see how the short distances on the sides and a deep CF affected game play. If you really wanted to mess with things you could replace the grass with turf.
  23. Ha - I kinda doubt that - out of the frying pan into the jumbo frying pan. I don't know any Astros fans that are actually excited about the move to the AL. It was forced on the team as a condition of sale from Drayton McLane to Jim Crane. So far Crane hasn't don't much to impress me. But we'll see. BTW, slightly off topic, but does anyone remember the White Sox wearing shorts in '76? Bizarre! I know a couple of Astro fans up here in Oregon who hate the move to the AL, hate the idea of the Astros using the DH, will miss some of the classic rivalries and have no hope for much good to happen this year, but they are happy that the team has come to them so to speak as they'll be able to see them in Seattle or Oakland. So there's that small base that's a little happy about it. And Mariner fans now have some hope they won't finish last this year. As far as the ChiSox, I loved the red pinstripe home & blue away uniforms that preceded the shorty pants. If black ever goes out of fashion I'd like to see a return of that. The double knit SOX pullovers after were unusual though only a few players could pull it off. http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/rwas/index.php?category=3&id=2104

    Bill Frisell

I've seen him in a few different settings, including the same sidemen that Milestones will see (if he's going to Cleveland). IIRC he's more likely to play a little more forcefully at times with those guys. The most meandering was just Bill w/ Greg Leisz and both were looping. I was in the front row of small hall. The person next to me fell asleep and another friend was bored to death but I loved it, though part of the fun was just to watch him fiddle with the knobs & foot pedals. Another time he played with a cellist and a violin (Jenny Scheinman) which wasn't the usual jazz guitar outing. I give him credit for endlessly mixing things up. He seems fairly shy and I'm not sure I've ever seen him wearing a shirt that wasn't black.
  25. I'm a clone of your post oh magnificent cat. Several years ago if I wanted to investigate something like Van Morrison's mixed period of the '80s I was able to buy used LPs at garage sales that were mint for a few dollars. The drawback of this is that there's no skip button. (This is why I prefer the Peel Slowly Cd box to my VU Lps as there's at least 1 track on every damn album that I can't be bothered with nowadays). And as you point out, now CDs are practically being given away while new vinyl (not all, but some) can cost $30-$40 - fuck that. The vinyl that's been included in a couple of boxes that I've gotten had problems yet as for me it was a "throw in" so I couldn't be bothered to send it back, but the whole pressing inconsistency game is something I don't miss at all with vinyl. Yes, I kept my old vinyl, played my vinyl all this time and some of it sounds great, and some of it is worn out ass that only a nostalgic old fart could love. And yo Mr. Nostalgic Lounge Lizard Bond Villain Hat, my hearing is just fine thankyouverymuch, maybe even better yours unless you're 16 and can hear mosquito rings & I download and shit too.
