  1. There have been cases where owners of rare music footage have put extracts up to test the water - see if it gets enough hits to justify putting it out commercially.
  2. Here's how Philippe Koechlin reviewed the Olympia gig in Jazz Hot (no. 208): Talk about spoiled! To me the commitment is amazing. Though it's true that Lee's solo is metaphorical for his career in general: starts on a high and gets into difficulties pretty quickly ... I never really used to, but I like Blakey's post-Elvin style update more and more. Edit: it occurs to me that there's a tape (which I haven't got round to listening to yet) of one of the opening sets from these Olympia shows - by the Jimmy Giuffre trio (!). Headline of the Melody Maker review of the Giuffre set at the tour's London stop: 'My Word, It Did Sound Queer'.
  3. I phoned up Sam Dockery to ask if I could interview him. He was very nice about it, but he said he was too busy. In the background, the sound of Oprah was unmistakable.
  4. There is! He lives at the North Pole with Santa! In fact, and this is absolutely true, Spanky had a brother called Slappy. I think there was another brother called Skippy. In fact I think there were four or five brothers, all similarly monikered. The DeBrests were a much-liked (and now fondly remembered) Richard Allen Project family.
  5. Tough! I hope the sound is better than the spelling. This release (also called Tought! apparently) features the little-known pianist Sam Dockeryery. I always thought he went on a bit. And as if there was a bassist called Spanky DeBrest!
  6. Lucky blighter. Mind you, you had to live through all that austerity first. Not like now. Hold on ...
  7. No way! I was wondering how long it would take for Tristano to show up on this thread. Got it in 2!
  8. Yes, the other one is Anna Livia Plurabelle, the hour long 1966 radio opera. Thanks for any leads re B.E. ...
  9. She will......... Whistle it for me She doesn't do the tenor solo. Are you sure this isn't the 45rpm edit?
  10. Maybe someone could just whistle it to me down the phone?
  11. 1972 LP: Epic 8044. Any format, to buy or borrow. Can anyone help? Thanks Tom
  12. Haven't looked, but I hear it's up on iTunes now.
  13. Yes, he would. Much BN work is registered to one or other of BN's own publishing companies. The percentage split of the publishing royalty (between BN and the composer) was negotiated on a case by case basis, as I understand it. Musicians with enough clout to insist that their work was published by their own publishing companies were not under the obligation to negotiate, of course. But that obviously disadvantaged the labels, which is why composers were compelled to pool their work with the label's company if they wanted to record a tune. Variations of this are still standard practice. There are complexities that others will be better placed to explain. On top of publishing royalty the musicians would receive a royalty for copies sold. But thereby hangs another tale. There are some books about this Chewy, including on various Blue Note artists ...
  14. Without wishing to be conspiracy-theoretical about it, I think I'm remembering correctly that Sidewinder, Search for the New Land and Caramba were all Morris Levy-assigned copyrights. And these are the three charting albums. Go figure, as they say. No doubt Bertrand can confirm or deny. And Lee Morgan is better than Hugh Masekela!
  15. There's a (quite funny) 40-page chapter on that chord in this great book by Dominic Pedler. Can't argue with the master tapes, but Pedler says, via George Martin, that there's some piano in there too.
  16. Propermusic have got some streamable and downloadable podcasts up here, including a new one about Joe Harriott, linked to the new Harriott Properbox release.
  17. I will be certain to listen! Now listening. Nice to hear you on the airwaves, Umum! Thanks Bill. Shame about the truncated audio clips on the podcast. But even then that version of I Loves You Porgy is an absolute killer, isn't it.
  18. I'm in the enthusing chair on this Saturday's Jazz Library. We're doing Barney Wilen - it's a very varied and very lovely bunch of stuff.
