  1. Regarding Japanese pressings of Prestige material, I have a Saxophone Colossus from Japan that is advertised as from the JVC Cutting plant that sounds really great to me. I think I paid $20.00 for it, maybe less and seeing what the original is going for, I'll probably have to be happy with what I have. I usually buy Japanese pressings when I see them, if the U.S. pressings are hard to find or expensive. They may not sound as good as a DG pressing but at least the vinyl is very quiet. It can always be used as a temporary disc until the one you really want lands on your doorstep. I posted this on the wrong thread. Oh well....'scuse me.
  2. My sentiment too, I really like Michael Blake on this CD and writing is very strong. Aside these two records, I'd suggest you not to forget Ben Allison part in Herbie Nichos Project, the group he founded with pianist Frank Kimbrough to celebrate an overlooked, unlucky great musician. They wrote together the notes for "The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Herbie Nichols", 1997 cd edition (!). All the three HNP cds are very good ones, from the first "Love Is Proximity" (Soul Note 1996) to the subsequent "Dr.Cyclops Dream" (Soul Note 1999) and "Strange City" (Palmetto 2001). Allison, Kimbrough, Ted Nash, Ron Horton, Blake joining from "Dt.Cyclops" on, Wycliffe Gordon on trombone -great player!- from "Strange City", with alternating drummers Jeff Ballard, Tim Horner and Matt Wilson. These are great Allison's performances too. Agree with this, although I haven't heard Strange City. I do have the other two and they are great. There is an earlier album of Ben's called Seven Arrows that I like a lot too.
  3. I too use Last Stylus cleaner (every week or so). I give the stylus a dry brushing before I play any record, regardless of how clean I think the record is.
  4. I've had this set for over a month and I'm with Jazzbo. I too think it's very enjoyable solo piano music. I'd rather hear Andrew do it than many others out there. I didn't have any of this on vinyl. I only have the older bluenote stuff, so it was new material for me. May not be his best work, but I still listen to it alot.
  5. I was just listening to a Thurman Green cd on Mapleshade that has Mr. Booker on it this morning and then I find this thread. I know that change is inevitable and we will always have the records to enjoy and remember, but it's still sad to see so many go in the last few years. RIP and save me a seat when it's my time to go.
  6. Until I bought this box set, I only owned one album by Max Roach, In The Light with Odean Pope on the Soulnote label. Of course, I have many albums with him playing drums, but that was the only one I had of his own. I was totally blown away by the music. I knew from the list of musicians that it would be good, but even so, I was not prepared for the qualityof this collection. The songs, the musicianship are truly first rate. My least favorite part of the collection are the two discs with the Buddy Rich Five. It's not anything against Buddy of course, but I would have prefered listening to the program by Max's Quintet alone, although it does give you a chance to compare the differences between the two drummers. Max is such a musical drummer and this box really shows it to good effect.
  7. I'm awaiting the arrival of the At Large lp from Classic. I can't wait to get it on my turntable. I thought about getting the cd collection and save some money but there's that little voice in my head that tells me that when the lp goes out of print, I'll wish I had sprung for the vinyl version.
  8. I'm on disc VI of the Max Roach set and I'm on repeat on the Hank Mobley 50's box. Awaiting the arrival of the Dizzy Reece Select.
