  1. Re-watched two of my all-time favorite comedies, both from the wonderfully demented mind of Preston Sturges. "One of these days they're just going to find your hair ribbon and an axe somewhere." "That's one of the tragedies of this life - that the men who are most in need of a beating are always enormous.."
  2. This is one I'd like to catch in the theater if I can get my schedule to sync up.
  3. I like all three of those Soderbergh films (I like most of his films actually). Been catching up with some of the stuff I missed from last year: Both excellent. The Big Short really impressed me for being able to take a seriously dry topic and make it entertaining, educational and of course infuriating. Spotlight was just an old-school newspaper drama ala All The Presidents Men...but a damn fine one I thought. Then I watched my vote for the WORST FILM OF 2016 so far..... What a steaming pile of shit! One good point: Gal Gadot. She didn't have much to do, but I think she's going to be a good Wonder Woman and thankfully Hack (Zack) Snyder is NOT directing the upcoming standalone WW film.
  4. That photo is current. She suffers from macular degeneration so her eyesight isn't so good, but aside from that it's reported she gets around just fine and is still sharp as a tack.
  5. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979, Robert Wise) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982, Nicholas Meyer)
  6. Can't afford 90210 (it's a boring damn neighborhood anyway), but in the past 5 years I've lived in 90018, 90004 and am now happily residing in 90006.
  7. It's extremely popular and has gotten excellent reviews, I think you should give it a shot and make up your own mind.
  8. Not original, but Prime does have some exclusive stuff you won't find on other services. If you have a strong stomach I can highly recommend the series "Hannibal" which takes the pulp origins and elevates them into art, they have the first 2 seasons so far, the final season should be added very soon.
  9. Been a long time since I sat down and watched this series. I decided to watch the original versions instead of the ones with redone FX, that's the way I remember them and it satisfies the nostalgic element. I don't think I've ever actually watched the series in sequence, grew up seeing it on reruns on TV, so it should be an interesting trip.
  10. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016, Dan Trachtenburg) Excellent "Twilight Zone-ish" 3-character film with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr. inside an underground bunker with mad-as-a-hatter John Goodman. An unknown "attack" has happened above ground...or has it? This simple setup launches a very entertaining, intelligent, dark (and darkly funny) tale with a bravura climax. Not a sequel to Cloverfield per se, but as producer J.J. Abrams described "it's a different ride in the same amusement park". Goodman and Winstead are both first-rate, Goodman chews the scenery with glee, Winstead communicates mostly with her eyes. It's an excellent study in acting contrast, both equally effective. One of my favorite films of 2016 thus far.
  11. The Conjuring 2 (2016, James Wan) Another nail-biting exercise in genre excellence from James Wan. He is a master at taking elements that have been used in a gazillion horror movies yet makes them feel fresh and exciting through sheer skill. He also understands that the primary component of a successful horror film are the characters, making them real and 3-dimensional so we care about their plight and he hires skillful actors to bring them to life. Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson and Frances O'Connor all excellent, as are the young cast.
  12. Alternating: Six Feet Under - season 1 SouthLAnd - season 2
  13. The Witch (Robert Eggars, 2016) Another fine entry in the growing "Art-House Horror" genre, which critics love and only about 45% of the audience gets. This literal, slow-burn tale of religious paranoia and the supernatural in New England sometime around the Salem witch trials is quite the experience. The attention to period detail is absolute, even to the point where I had to turn the subtitles on to grasp the old-English verse and the heavy accents. I can't really describe much without giving away some of the more delicious twists and turns, suffice it to say that this is a very unique and intelligent horror yarn, adapted from folk tales and actual accounts of "witchcraft" in New England during this era. There are some disturbing images and the tone is almost unrelentingly bleak but it leaves a lot to your imagination, which just makes it far creepier.
  14. Yes, seagulls aren't exactly polite if they want something they come after it. Hold on tight to your food.
  15. Lemmy: 49% Motherf**ker, 51% Son of a Bitch (documentary, 2011) Excellent documentary of rock icon Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister of Hawkwind and Motorhead. The filmmakers followed him around for 3 years and got a wealth of great footage and many insightful interviews with his peers and admirers. I think even people unfamiliar with the music would find it entertaining.
  16. Going to need a yank translation for that! I know pinch means steal (here it's what you do to a girls butt that usually gets you slapped), but not sure about pastie, that term is usually reserved for the little adhesive circles that strippers wear over their nipples.
  17. Daredevil - season 2 (Netflix). Not quite up to the level of the first season, but still better than anything comics related on broadcast or cable. They nicely set up the character of The Punisher for his own series.
  18. Reviews are just subjective opinions certain people get paid for.
  19. Only seen the first episode so far. I'm interested enough to keep watching, though the subject matter is quite familiar.
