  1. I've found a playlist on Spotify called "Lester Young Chronological solos:1936-1942". There are 200 entries including many (though not all) alternate takes and recorded broadcasts. There is one entry that is not listed in Frank Buchmann-Moller's Prez discography. It's from 1941 or '42: "Just a Little Bit South" and whoever compiled the playlist says it's by an "unknown band" (and singer). The tenor solo sure sounds like Prez of that era. Any one know about this?
  2. Is this a record for the longest time between replies?
  3. Until he picked up the keytar off a stand he sat at a grand piano at right angles to a an electric keyboard switching between the two even within solos. Though I've seen the film several times it's been a while and I wouldn't recognize the theme from Blowup.
  4. Saw him last night. Terrance Blanchard and Chris Potter part of the sextet. I thought he walked slowly at first but by end of two hour concert he was bouncing around the stage. He filled a 2,000 seat theater and wowed most of the audience (there were a few early walkouts, but the concert was part of a subscription series and unadulterated jazz probably wasn't what everyone was looking for). All the compositions were by Herbie except Footprints which he announced was written by his recently passed best friend, Wayne Shorter. Ended with some Headhunters pieces and never played Water Melon Man.

  6. What's Gil Evans' "Jazz Time" and how many volumes in the live at Sweet Basil?
  7. I've noticed a couple of releases from Impulse on Bandcamp. What's up with that? (I'm not complaining.)
  8. Is that one of the Woodstock releases next to Sweet Baby James?
  9. Me too. But do you think he has the rest of the photos right excluding those of Wille Smith?
  10. It was a club booking: The Zanzibar, 1945.
  11. Duke was pissed when Louis Jordan was billed above him. But he did show up.
  12. Looks like Jazzfest without the great Big Easy bands.
  13. I had that box set and gave it to my son who, unlike me still had a turntable. Good liner notes as I remember. Koko and Jack the Bear?
  14. I mentioned in a earlier post that I'd heard an interview with him where he talked about being influenced by Charles Brown, but in fact it may have been Cole. Everyone was influenced by the King Cole Trio including Charles Brown.
