  1. I agree with all this. A fairly new movie can be found on DVD for $9.99 but the soundtrack may cost $18. For too the only method record companies could think of to make more money was to raise their prices. Look at the rush here to buy things from the Concord/Oldies sale.
  2. CD Trader in Tarzana is good, I always find stuff there and reasonably priced. That's the one I meant when I said Encino. I've found some pretty rare stuff there. (eg. a Joya Sherill cd.)
  3. It says it's on Verve but I suspect it's The Andoreans or whatever we call them.
  4. In LA there's always Amoeba but I've found a couple of interesting stores in the Valley. One actually carries a lot of new jazz cds. (I don't know their names, I just know where they are-- one's near Woodman and ones in Encino (I think).
  5. Someone I'd never heard of named Billy Mays died recently and got a lot of press. When I first read the headline of his obit I mis-read his name as Billy May and thought it was fitting he'd gotten such a big write-up. Now Billy May is dead. Nice to see him getting some recognition too even if the obit isn't quite as long.
  6. Hey, me too! Good taste is timeless. Would love to hear your guys' thoughts on this book if you don't mind! I've been considering picking this one up. It sounds interesting, but I must admit I was drawn to it at first by the very cool cover! I thought that the writing was a bit cliched at times but it's a page turner and worth a read.
  7. Didn't Miles used to leave the stage, go to the bar and have a drink sometimes while sidemen were soloing? Even start up conversations? I may be doing him a disservice here. Can't cite any sources and he stayed on stage the couple of times I saw him.
  8. Where? And what years does it cover? Thanks in advance.
  9. I love that Mulligan CJB recording.
  10. I thought I read somewhere that the JSP Patton sounded different and better than the Reverent (Is that the right name?). I probably mis-remember.
  11. When it comes to music industry stupidity, there is truly nothing new under the sun. They've been pulling essentially the same dumb stunts over and over for many decades. The action in the 1940's actually stemmed from the musicians' union, calling a strike against record companies. The union felt that radio and jukeboxes were taking work away from live musicians, and they felt that record companies ought to compensate musicians for airplay. They won, and to this day, radio stations are required to pay licensing fees to music publishers and to the union. I'm not sure how the jukebox issue was settled, but I'll bet it's a similar deal. I know they pay publishers. I didn't think they paid the union. (I could, of course, be wrong.)
  12. I would never have bought a Kindle but I was given one. I like it a lot. Especially because I'm traveling right now. Not only do I have several books on it but I have a bunch of scripts I have to read. Saves me about 30 pounds. I agree with the technical points in the above 2 postings (though I don't reallY understand them). However I still think they're too expensive.
  13. Allen: To repeat a question I asked in a separate thread: you ever hear of Jimmy "Babyface" Lewis.
  14. That's my story. I wonder if we all ordered from the same website. I was lucky in that they used an expired card.
  15. Same thing happened to me just now but it was the Clickandbuy(US)..
  16. I'm traveling from the south of France to Tuscany and the only city of any size I'll be in is Florence. I'm looking for several European released cds. Anyone know of any cd stores in Florence that might be worth checking out?
  17. Amazon tells you how to send files to your kindle at no cost. (It does add one step.) It also offers many pd books for free.
  18. Happy B'day! Remember that the original EKE loved you madly.
  19. Hound Dog: The Lieber-Stoller autobiography. Good stuff. More jazz references than I would have suspected. Stoller studied with James P Johnson and gigged with Chet Baker.
  20. Wow. I used to know Len in Montreal in the early '60s.
  21. How big does a book have to be before it becomes a coffee table book? I have a bunch of books of jazz photography and find that when they get too big I hardly look at them. The Taschlen edition of the William Claxton "Jazz Life" is so big it's unwieldy (and quite a bit bigger than the original edition). I find that within in a year of their first release large photo books are often remaindered. The they go out of print and start to get very expensive.
  22. At a July 4th party the hostess was playing a cd that at first I thought was a compilation because sometimes it sounded like Chicago Blues but at times a bit like Charles Brown. Turns out it was all by one guy: Jimmy Babyface Lewis. Unfortunately she was playing a CDR from a friend and so I got no info from it. He's not even listed in AMG and there were only a couple of sites when I googled him. However one of them was http://www.bluebeatmusic.com/index.php?mai...df1251d47825745 a site I'd never heard of and they have a cd for sale from Bluemoon of his complete recordings. Before I order this is he as good as he sounded to me or had I just had too many marguerites?
