  1. Happy B'day and many more. Are you still in Calgary? We're going there Friday and I hear that it's just gotten really cold.

    Anthony Braxton

Yeah - can't figure out how it'll sound. I'm sure that two guys with such vast musical personalities and integrity, however, will produce something at the very least completely fascinating. In some ways, musical success would be a happy by-product of seeing/hearing the two of them work something. True. Cecil's pairing with Derek Bailey produced one of the most fascinatingly unusual items in either musician's catalog. But maybe Taylor & Braxton will just do Brubeck tunes Ha! I was just scrolling through to see if anyone had mentioned the Brubeck record with Braxton on one side and Konitz on the other. BTW I have a vague memory (as many of mine are nowadays) of Braxton and Cecil teamng up in the '70s-- or at least a teaming up being announced.
  3. So is this available on cd? I used to own it on Lp but have never seen a cd.
  4. A friend sent me a cdr of a recording he'd downloaded (I think from e-music). It was a compilation called Be-bop Revisited. The only information he included was the name of the band leader or group on each cut (eg Oscar Pettiford, Al Haig.) Recently I was using a rented car and stuck this cd into the car's player. I glanced down and noticed-- much to my surprise- the the cd/radio's read out was showing the title of each cut. Then I almost drove off the road when it gave not only the name of the group but added the names of band members! Usually about 4 then just saying "plus others". (Eg Oscar Pettiford and his 18 All Stars with Dizzy Gillespie, Trummy Young, Don Byas, Shelly Mann and others". I got very excited (I'm easily excited) at the prospect of finding this kind of discographical information on other cds, but much to my chagrin even though I tried regular cds, cdrs and downloads I never found another one on which the player was able to find any information except the track number. And I never found another player that displayed such information from this cdr. I've since returned the car so can't experiment any more. So my question is: What the hell is going on here?
  5. A Mexican meal in Halifax! Well Happy Birthday and good luck.
  6. I got the high-end ones (whatever they're called) from Cambridge Audio but since Henry Kloss died that company seems to have gotten a bit tacky-- at least that's the impression I get from their mailings. However back in the day they were great value for the money. You might check them out and try to find someone who's bought their more recent offerings.
  7. Argghhh.. I'm runng out of shelf space but I think I have to have the Ellington, the Chu Berry and the Johnny Mercer. And just when I'd decided to stop buying any more cds until I'd given a careful listen to Allan Lowe's 4 box sets.
  8. Sonny Rollins and Leonard Cohen! What the.....!!??
  9. Go to your Safari preferences. Click on "General" and you'll get a choice of where to send your dowloads. Just choose "Desktop". You'll end up with an mp3 file thatt you can drop into iTunes. Thanks jazzbo and whoever else mentioned the option key. I'd been using Wiretap while I streamed the music-- which is a pain to do.
  10. You may feel the same way about this one. It's even more visually stunning but I think the Chinese have a different idea of narrative than Westerners.
  11. No wonder Duke called him "Floorshow" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7S4oUliCn0
  12. Kenyon Hopkins! I didn't know he made any records that weren't movie scores.
  13. I think it was the first Billie Holiday Lp box set on Columbia.
  14. Great book. The Penguin edition includes a map for a walking tour of Barcelona which takes you to various places mentioned in the book. Unfortunately I read the book shortly after returning from Barcelona this past Spring. I wish I'd read it before we went-- ot=r better yet while we were there. However I did discover that the hotel in which we stayed seems to have been the location for the home of the character Nuria Monfort. My kids stayed in the room which what I think would have been hers.
  15. Well the majors do often pay royalties and I suspect always pay songwriters. (The fee is set by congress!) And when American independants put a lot of time, money and effort into reissus such as the early Charles Mingus box from UpTown they are often ripped off by the likes of Lonehill and Proper. (Ask Nessus.)
  16. Which recording is the one where he calls out "Take it to the Bridge Maceo"?
  17. I have Digital Video Essentials and it worked very well for me. I believe they will both do the job. I've heard that Avia might have a more user friendly interface. Wow I was about to order Video Essentials from Amazon (through the forum of course) but I read the customers reviews and they really soured me on it. I also noted that it was 5 years old. Am I being too sceptical?
  18. This morning on NPR they had a piece about dissident Greek Monks who have fortified themselves in a monastery. As they told the story they played Monk's version of Caravan under it, finally bringing the music up when they made the joke that these must have been "Thelonious Monks". Does Thelonious have some meaning I don't know about? You can hear it here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6667730
  19. Hey they arrived. Haven't started to play them yet but they look great!
  20. I know it barely came out in time to make the cut but you gotta add the Mosaic Duke Ellington Small Groups to the reissue list.
  21. I'm doing my best to putthe X back in Xmas. Actually I'm having a good time. Two nights ago we lit the menorah and then decorated the Xmas tree. (My wife's a convert and thinks it's sacriligous to put up the tree before the lighting of candles on the first night of Chanuka.)
  22. Thanks for the info, Ray. I got a 30" LCD set a while ago. Love it. the other night watched Finding Nemo just cause it looked so good. I suspect the source was a digital and had never gone through film. it looked better than it did in theaters (though I never saw it projected digitally).
