  1. I have really enjoyed the Zoot and Al I've heard- "You N Me" and "Live at the Half Note". Also interesting is "Cohn Tones" (savoy) from 1950/53. The early session is rather agricultural sound wise but the latter session has Horace Silver ripping it to excellent effect.
  2. One of Morgan's better sessions. A bit less formulaic than some and Booby H is in fine if subdued form. Will spin tonight
  3. Yet more spectulation I know but isn't it fun. A recent Jazzreview (UK) mentioned that Lee Konitz had posession of tapes of Warne and Lee from the late 1970's that he (Konitz) was considering releasing. Again sounds interesting but may be just wishful thinking.
  4. I was particulary interested to read that VSOP might be releasing further Warne material that hasn't been released previously.
  5. Picked up "Last but not least" Vol 2 Kenny plus Sonny Red dated 25th Feb 1966 from the Half Note broadcast. Sound is a little shakey but adequate. It's on the Raretone label. Any idea how many others there in this series?

  7. why not buy the mosaic, sound is excellent and it's stack full of goodies at a very reasonable price
  8. of those mentioned this must be the best and it is going soon
  9. Following a review of a Sun Ra album that compared his piano style to Nichols I bought Herbie Nichols in summer 1992. My first order from overseas, was I excited or what !!!

This is the one I've ordered but I did notice that CDUniverse have the Delos release you mention, tempting

I managed to snag a copy of that LP from Dusty Groove ( along with a title by Hadley Caliman?) so hopefully in few weeks or so I'll find out if the rest of the album is up to the same standard.

BBC Radio 3 had an excellent brief piece on alto saophone player Bunky Green and played a track called "Tension and Release" from a Vanguard LP from the late 70s. I must say I had never really heard of him but was very impressed by his tone and playing. His output would appear to have been quite limited but I wondered if any board members had views on him and/or his releases?
  15. I saw for the first time an LP copy of Allmusic today and was surprised by the cover which was very purple and totally unlike the blue and b&w of Chucks occasional avatar of "All Music". Are we getting purple or blue?
  16. Ok we now know who EST are, I want to know who Claes-Goran Fagerstedt is. Picked up a rather beat up copy of "Stone Free" Swedish Jazz Piano dated Jan 1975 on Odeon label. Nice pianist if nothing incredible. No trace of him at AMG, any one heard of him. Picked it up because it has Gunnar Bergsten and Bernt Rosengren who I have heard before and liked.
  17. Seven of these tracks were added to the Chess CD release ( 1998?) of "Free" produced by MC.
  18. I really like this one, had it the week it was released direct from FSNT, Horton has a great tone and his compositions work very nicely. The opening track (forget the name but it's off Hill's Blackfire) is just sublime. I think it's even better than "Genius Envy" and I though that was pretty good too.
  19. Bev, you're surely missing something here The Bad Plus are excellent. I was really suprised by some of the negative vibe that sprung up at the other place when they debutted on Sony. Their performances are quite exciting (if a little showy) and Ethan is one hell of a pianist. Like EST i will be interested where they go or if they get stuck in a groove.
  20. this is available on vinyl as are som other Time releases, don't know the source but I recently picked up a new copy of brother Tommy's Time release on LP, sound is good (but not spectacular) and pressing clean
