  1. Yes, ordered from DG (shipping today), and the same here, as I really liked Disco 3000.
  2. A Riverside LP that I saw earlier in the week--Songs of the Irish Republican Army.
  3. Joe Puma--Audobon All Stars (Columbia six eyes) Erroll Garner--Concert by the Sea (Columbia six eyes). After coming across trashed copy after trashed copy, I finally found a clean one today. J.J. Johnson--A Touch of Satin (Columbia six eyes) The Exotic Sounds of Bali (Columbia two eyes) Red Garland--Red Alone (Moodsville). This one it appears was originally for sale for $4.98, then reduced to $4.15, which apparently induced Ruby Lee to purchase this album (and write her name on it).
  4. An excellent week for Columbias (promos in virtually unplayed condition): J.J. Johnson--J.J. Inc., and A Touch of Satin (both six eyes) Chico Hamilton--Plays Selections from Bye Bye Birdie-Irma La Douce, and The Chico Hamilton Special (both six eyes) Duke Ellington--All American in Jazz (six eyes) Erroll Garner--Paris Impressions, vol. 1 (six eyes) Dave Brubeck--Jazz Impressions of Japan (two eyes, unopened) Benny Goodman--The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert (six eyes).
  5. Those of use not bored with jazz find those of you constantly talking about how boring jazz has become to be truly boring.
  6. It's $25 at the site I linked to above. Except for a few domestic releases on Columbia (and I don't think this was one), all DIW's are in Japanese, so I imagine the $56 one is the same as the lower priced one.
  7. Jazzwise, he likes the Modern Jazz Quartet, Jimmy Smith and Mongo Santamaria.
  8. Shannon Jackson and the Decoding Society--Street Priest (Moers Music)
  9. There's an excellent LP by Lionel Hampton, Jazz Flamenco, recorded in Madrid. The LP is also on RCA, and is copyright 1957. More recently, Nino Josele, a Spanish flamenco guitarist, has been working on fusing flamenco and jazz. He focuses on songs associated with Bill Evans. His excellent 2007 release was Paz. http://www.amazon.com/Paz-El-Nino-Josele/d...1918&sr=1-1 I was lucky enough to get to see Nino Josele perform at the Village Vanguard last year with a quartet, two Spanish musicians, plus Esperanza Spalding on bass and vocals. It was very compelling (even better than the recording).
  10. Gene Shaw--Break Through and Debut in Blues (Argo) Jonah Jones Swingin' Around the World (Capitol) Coltrane (Impulse, black and red label) Big John Patton--Got a Good Thing Goin' (Blue Note, New York USA)
  11. Dave Brubeck---Red, Hot and Cool (Columbia six eyes)
  12. This One's for Ja is on a Japanese label, DIW, so it could be hard to find. However, this site appears to have it for sale. http://db.cadencebuilding.com/search/
  13. A bonanza of Benny Goodmans. Benny Rides Again (Chess, black label) Plays World Favorites in High Fidelity (Westinghouse) The New Benny Goodman Sextet (Columbia six eyes) Mostly Sextets (Capitol, turquoise label) Happy Session (Columbia six eyes) BG 25 (Columbia six eyes) Arrangements by Fletcher Henderson (Columbia, maroon label) Arrangements by Eddie Sauter (Columbia, maroon label) Benny Goodman and His Orchestra (Columbia, maroon label).
  14. Have never even seen or heard of that recording. Talk about obscure ! If you were a fan of Handy's work with Mingus and his 60s Columbia recordings buying LPs in the 1980s, you would have picked this LP up (as I did) as a return to straight ahead jazz, after his dismal commercial recordings (Hard Work, Carnival...).
  15. Elmore James, the Classic Early Recordings, 1951-56 came in the mail. I also purchased used: Clifford Jordan and Ran Blake, Masters from Different Worlds (Mapleshade). On vinyl: a beautiful copy of Dave Brubeck, Red Hot and Cool (Columbia six eyes), and Lou Donaldson, Midnight Sun (Blue Note rainbow).
  16. These are (or have recently been) available from dustygroove for $5.99. Presumably they are all being deleted. In fact, I wondered if Columbia was busy deleting its entire non-Miles jazz CD catalog.
  17. Really? Which Dallas store has the new RVGs? The one here in Arlington doesn't have any of them. They have some of them anyway (and 3 less than yesterday)--the one at Greenville and Lovers.
  18. The only CDs of interest they had at the Border's I visited last night were the last couple of rounds of Blue Note RVGs. Otherwise, their selection is less than poor. Even more ominously, I hardly ever even see anyone browsing in the CD section there anymore.
  19. The Modern Jazz Quartet (Atlantic 1265, pinwheel label) The Modern Jazz Quartet Live at the Lighthouse (Atlantic, blue and green label) Ahmad Jamal--Happy Moods (Argo, blue label)
  20. I've gone through my entire collection over the last three years and had problems in transferring music to itunes with only a couple of CDs. The problem is presumably in your computer.
  21. Lessons in Living is another excellent one with a horn player (Lou Donaldson) --it's live at Montreux, also with Jack Bruce.
  22. Charles Lloyd, Rabo de Nube, and Matana Roberts, The Chicago Project, both came in the mail today.
  23. Jason Moran sound fabulous backing up Bunky Green on Another Place (Label Bleu).
  24. Return to Forever 5/29/08 - Austin, TX - Paramount Theatre 5/30/08 - Austin, TX - Paramount Theatre 5/31/08 - Houston, TX - Verizon Wireless Center 6/01/08 - Dallas, TX - Nokia Theatre at Grand Prairie
  25. Thelonious Monk--Monk's Blues (Columbia, 2 eyes)
