  12. I'm having the other books by Kahn already on a pile at home. The biography about Lee Morgan is on it's way over the ocean... and I think I'm going to order "West Coast Jazz" tonight, after so many recommendations. (or I'll go to a bookstore tomorrow afternoon, I'd like to support my local book and record stores) JB
  13. I can also recommend this book. One of the best jazz books I've read. Almost every page made me want to pull out the records. After this book has been seconded here, I'll herewith third it. D: And to go on in a different vein (following up the Chess ansd Atlantic recommendations), how about doing you book reading online for a while? This site http://hubcap.clemson.edu/~campber/rsrf.html will tell you a lot of details about a LOT of Chicago blues and jazz labels from the golden era. More than you could possibly ever put into a printed book. But beware - it IS geared towards collectors who a sticklers for details too. wowwww, what a great site, this is!!! thanks a lot!! (nice reading during my nightshift, right now... :)) JB
  14. No...not more revelatory than THAT! Hell, NOTHING is! But, I just think a session left in the can from 1961 of Jimmy, Q. Warren and Donald Bailey has GOT to be a great session. I always think some of Jimmy's best years were '60-'63 ish. "Best" is a silly word. But he was finding the essence of what would become the style that would remain with him until the end of his life during this period imho. Anyway, enough academic b.s....let's hear that tape! For me, the revelation came like a jolt of electricity when I heard Live At Club Baby Grand Vol. 2. made in 1956, which I am now realizing is JOS BEFORE Groovin' at Small's. Wow. isn't Live At Baby Grand due for a connoisseur or a RvG?? JB
  15. looking forward to that first one, too. and thanks for tip of the second one. it's getting rave reviews on Amazon, too. JB
  16. [ That one's a gem. I too found it brand new, within the past two years. See elsewhere in this thread for info on the hidden track.
  17. cool! how was it? as good as Shaft? JB
