  1. Hmmm..

It was only released in 2005.. but a US RvG version of Leo Parker's "Let Me Tell You 'Bout It" is 99$ and up on amazon, while the European version, with copy control, on amazon.co.uk is only 6.54 English Pounds...

The dollar is taking a pounding :g

    :P:P:P

I am wondering how many of this CD were manufactored in the US, it wasn't a limited edition.

There must be a store where they sell it for a normal price, only I haven't found it yet...

    JB

    Sorry 'bout that. Couldn't resist.

  2. That's odd. I don't think EMI would deliberately sell Copycontrol CDs in the US, after what happened to Sony.

Maybe it was a CD that was "returned" to CD Universe by a customer.

Don't think so, on the back of the tray it says both "copy control" and "printed in the USA".

And now I remove the black tray, beneath it, copy control is also printed.

  3. Weird...

I just ordered and received a CD (The RvG Stanley Turrentine's "That's What It's At", from 2005), especially ordered it from a US Internet store,

and it looked kind of weird:

It was the first RvG in a normal black jewelcase, instead of the see-through with "Rudy van Gelder" printed on it's spine,

but, more important, on the back it says: "printed in the USA", and still had copy control on it! And also strange, the CD in it, (with copy control) had "printed in the EU" on it...)

There goes my simple system of buying all Blue Note's in the period of copy control in the US...

  4. Hiroshi Tanno has confirmed that the running time of SICP20090 is 46 mins 34 seconds, which by my reckoning makes it the original version.

    Denis

I saw it on the net somewhere for $37.00 ...

Maybe a cheaper US or EU version will be released someday...

  5. I haven't been on the forum for a while, but I know that for the best information, this is the place to be.

I the past, I did read here from which exact batch till which batch the Blue note RvG's did have copy control. I tried to get this info through the search option, but apparently I'm doing something wrong. Hope one of you experts can help me.

  6. There was a great thread on the BNBB about the various Chess series (there are also those "almost twofers" where Keepnews omitted two tracks off the second album included, usually). If someone could post that thread, that would be way cool, I don't have any saved old threads, alas.

those must have been frustrating... for missing those 1 or 2 songs...

  7. Someone on the Steve Hoffman site passed on the tip that Best Buy has the Coltrane Box The Impulse Albums Vol.1 for $11.99. According to the website none of my local stores had it, but I ordered it from the website and even with shipping and tax it came to under $15. I know there are reservations about this set, but at this price...

so what are the reservations about this set?

    JB

sorry, I hadn't read the rest of the threat.

but how is this really the best sound quality till now?

    JB

John, everyone has a different idea of what "the best sound quality" is.

I will say that these sound very very good. I put them up there with the K2 Digital Impulse cds from Japan as my favorite sounding versions. There are many reasons why these may sound so good. Better source tapes. . . more careful engineering of the remastering process. . . improved mastering equipment. . . .Whatever the reasons, it seems to me that great care was taken to get a great sounding result and it has paid off.

    thanks jazzbo!

what about comparing the sound quality to the expanded versions of "Ballads" and "AFRICA/BRASS" ??

    JB

    John,

I prefer the sound of the new single disc version of Africa Brass to the Impulse two cd set, but of course there is far less material.

As for the "Ballads" Deluxe version. .. . People who don't like RVG remastering will prefer the new one. I like them both (and of course the two cd set has more material).

    thanks for the info, jazzbo!

  8. That's what happened to the "Live at Club Mozambique" set. Houston Person told my mate, in 1980, that the tapes were lost. "Lost" just means they've done what my wife is always doing with important things like her innoculation record - put in a "logical" safe place that she can't recall.

should be a job for a music student?

  9. yes, they have a border on the left, just a 3/8" or so, and are actually in my opinion glossier and a better cover image. Inside they have the center gatefold images.

True, but don't plan on reading any of the notes on the inside - too small - no booklet.

are they readable with a magnifying glass? :P

    is the fineprint that good?

  10. From musictap:

Verve Records will unleash Coltrane originals, restored and remastered and in digipak packaging to best replicate the original look and feel of the albums. Albums include The Complete Africa/Brass Sessions, Live at the Village Vanguard, Coltrane, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, Ballads, and a Limited Edition slip-cased Box set that houses all of these 5 Impulse reissues. This first salvo will be joined by future reissues of Coltrane classics in a collector’s setting. These individually available and Boxed set will be released on October 30.

but the box didn't have the complet africa /brass sessions, like mentioned here.

then it would be a perfect box!

    JB

  11. Here's the list I have, ordered by when the "limited edition" batch was supposed to expire (in fact, they're mostly all still available in stores or through Amazon):

The first 30 are packaged mini-LP style, and the rest are in digipacks. Mostly a pretty enjoyable lot; some fun stuff with only one out-and-out dog (the Kenton).

    thanks a lot!

didn't realize this also was a limited edition series
